Guest guest
Just when I thought I had heard all the silly, ignorant, inane comments people can make, both directly and indirectly from all of your experiences, I got a new one. Last night at my brother's house a neighbor came over with her dog. It's some kind of terrier and a trained therapy dog. The owner is an RN. She rushed over to me and says, " I'm afraid she might freak out over YOUR son. She can't handle people with Down syndrome. They must have some different kind on energy. She has no problems with very sick people, but can't handle people with Down syndrome. " I try and explain that Liam loves dogs and plays with a couple in our neighborhood. She said, " Well he might be young enough so he won't bother her. " I put on his coat and made a quick departure. Have you ever? I thought of what I should've said later. She must be a talented dog if she can count chromosones with her nose. Or, She's probably picking up on your discomfort with people with DS. Amazing!
