Guest guest
Hello all, Let me introduce our family. My name is Tracey and I am a stay at home mom. My husband, , is a Master Sgt. in the IL State Police. We have 3 children, Brent(12), Holly(9), and (7ds). Brent and Holly are bio children. is adopted and African-American. has had heart surgery, has asthma, some emerging behaviorial issues, and maybe some fetal alcohol traits. His bio mother smoked, drank " some " , smoked pot, and took paxil and prescription sleeping pills after an attempted suicide with tylenol. Considering his prenatal, he's doing great. He is in a CBI (community based instruction) program at school. Loves pizza, chips, Barney, Spongebob, bike riding, and going for rides in our jeep. He has minimal speech and gets frustrated often because of his lack of communication skills. He has a very contagious laugh and is most of all, all boy. I have been a member of the group for some years, but have not kept up. I set the post to read online thinking I would stay up with it and didn't. So I changed it to recieve emails again to get to know all of you again and meet the new folks. Glad to be back, Tracey
Guest guest
Hi Tracey! I waited 8 years before seeking help from a behavioral psychologist for my son. I wish I had done so earlier. My son also has apraxia and speech is hard to understand. He also has ADHD (recently diagnosed) and OCD (not officially diagnosed) and epilepsy. When he is sick, his behaviors skyrocket. We moved him to a more restrictive setting in school (small classroom size) where he is happier. We are also doing some reverse inclusion - bringing his peers from his " official " regular classroom in to work on social studies and science. When his regular teacher asked for volunteers, every child in the classroom raised their hand . My main goal for him this year is to get his behaviors under control at school. We are seeing him make progress in academics - more now than the beginning of school. We, and not the school, have sought the help of a real behaviorist (they use a visiting teacher - not a psychologist). If you are eligible for subsidy and insurance or the school won't pay for specialized services, I'd ask your post adoption social worker what could be available. I'd love to have someone attend the sessions with the behavioral psychologist with us and then help implement that into school, daycare and even home. There is no funding here for us - but if were adopted, I'd get that help. You can find what your state (where was placed from) subsidy includes at http://nacac.org. Also, if has medicaid, you may be able to get help that way, too. Here in Virginia, medicaid will pay for 6 months of in home services (and the therapists provides help outside of the home and consults with all the professionals). Despite 's challenging behaviors, he has many strengths. His self help skills have increased this year, he loves to spell and read, he can be social when he wants to be, his speech continues to improve and lately, I've been seeing more of that " lovable " trait. Welcome back out of lurk mode! Hello, New to list....kinda Hello all, Let me introduce our family. My name is Tracey and I am a stay at home mom.
