Becky,

Way off the ds topic, but i had a year of AP Spanish in HS and majored in

Spanish in my 1st two years of college and went right to my major classes

because of the AP classes I had in HS.

About being " gifted " ..... Well, there was no " label " to call it that way

back then! LOL

My son had a 504 plan with his gifted program. At the time the only things

offered were social studies and science.

Re: re: was IEP, now IEP for gifted

How common is it to have an IEP for gifted kids? My daughter is in 1st

and is in the gifted program but no IEP. I wish they did because the

program is pretty ill-defined. The only real requirement is 225 minutes

of pull-out a week. The teacher has put together that is purely

" enrichment " . And they work on multi-disciplinary projects. I think

this may work for older kids but I'm not entirely sure what the value

is in 1st. For example, they recently completed a project on bats. When

we went for the open house all the kids had written stories about bats

and most of them sounded about the same. The teacher commented that the

kids had done brainstorming together and then written their own

stories. Also, there is a very heavy reliance on technology, again

something not entirely appropriate for 1st graders. It's also

frustrating because M.E.'s teacher this year is fabulous so missing

classroom time is a loss.

I know what you mean... I've been on a GT committee in our district and there

has been a lot of discussion about " enrichment " for the " gifted " kids and

what it entails... and I realized that I had a lot of that in grade school.

In first grade 6 of us between the 2 first grade classes were in a separate

reading group... I remember being handed a folder that said " SPECIAL " and had

more advanced work. (Apparently, that was long before Inclusion, and before

" Special Ed " meant adapted curriculum for kids who couldn't keep up!) There

were several of us specifically picked to do reports and present to the class

in 4th grade...for example, when we study the American southwest, my best

friend and I were assigned a report on Libya.

In HS we had a faster track for math, and the option in science of moving a

year ahead so that we ended up with AP Bio in our senior year. I didn't find

out until years later that one of the kids in our class opted out of AP Bio

and went over the the local college and took college freshman Physics

instead.

Anyway - we all knew who the " smart kids " were.... but no one called us

" gifted " . Personally I think the word is the pits. EVERY kid is " gifted " in

his/her own way and to call some kids " gifted " implies that the rest are not.

No wonder people are anxious to get their kids qualified!
