Guest guest
Well, Theres Expecting Adam which I've never read, but always wanted to. There's " Count Us In " by Kingsley and someone else. Burke has a book " Hero something " . Of course the classic is " Babies With Down Syndrome " , that was like my bible in the early years. And when you need it like in 2 years, there's the " Teaching Reading To Children with Down Syndrome " by_______________( I think cindy can fill in that blank). She's also got other books like Teaching Handwriting and one more I think. Sorry, this is a poor cry for someone who is interested in reading some good books! ~ Mom to 12 DS and Diabetes Type 1 and 8 NY
Guest guest
Funny you should ask..my neighbors and I are just starting a book club, so books are very much on my mind. Some of my favorites: - Expecting Adam, DS related; - The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. A fictional accountant of the life of Dinah from the Bible, daughter of ...from the back cover of the book - " this novel reveals the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood. " LOVED this book; - Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott. It is a memoir about her spiritual growth and it is moving, very funny and spiritual in a way that many people can relate to. - And finally, since I know you are also an adoptive mom, I am currently reading " Twenty Things Adopted Kids wishes their Adoptive parents knew. " Really interesting reading.
Guest guest
Oh lets see, since we're new at this we've been reading a lot. I liked " Expecting Adam " , " Choosing Naia " , " Angel behind the rocking chair " . I'd love to hear what others like too. Anne mom to M.E. 6, Nate 4, & Nicky 4 mos DS. Guest guest
Jill, My favorite is " Angel Behind The Rocking Chair " by Pam Vredevelt ISBN 1-57673-250-9. I found this book accidentally ( not knowing it was about DS ). It has a cute little kid & a rocker on the cover and the subtitle " Stories of Hope In Unexpected Places " . Since I like all of the above, I felt compelled to buy it. I was so thrilled when I discovered who the stories were about. Stormie O'Martian ( Christian author ) describes it this way " A touching, fresh, heart-hugging book about finding God amidst the struggles of life, so beautifully written it's like hearing your best friend share her heart. You'll be laughing one moment and crying the next " . " Angel... " is such a fantastic book I couldn't put it down. I donated copies to our church library & local DSA and I give it to new parents I come in contact with. This book is a couple of years old now so you might be able to find it on half.com or one of the other discount book sale sites. B Read any good books lately... About DS, that is? Or, at least, semi-related to DS. Fictional, inspirational, educational...I don't care as long as they're good! Thanks, Jill (Mom to Luke, , Song, , & Emma--DS, 2 yrs)

Guest guest
I once posted to the list all of the books in the woodbine house series - Topics in Down Syndrome. I'll be happy to do it again. They are: Medical and Surgical care for children with down syndrome teaching reading to children with down syndrome classroom language skills in children with down syndrome communication skills in children with down syndrome There are a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head. The last three ones I listed are included in Jordan's IEP. IOW the school must purchase them and use the ideas and worksheets in the books with Jordan since they are specially designed for children with ds. There's also a book called Yoga for the Special Needs Child which is NOT part of this series or even by this publisher, but it's a very good read. Judi - Proud mother to Jordan 7, ds and Savannah 10 weeks, nda Where ever you go.... There you are

Guest guest
The others in the series are Gross Motor Skills and Fine Motor Skills. Another book I liked was called " The View from Our Shoes " it's a compilation of essays by the sibs of kids with special needs, not just DS. It was interesting and got me thinking about how to handle my other two. A good source for other books is Amazon, either look at what others have shopped for or the lists, there are several good ones by parents of kids with DS. Also, thanks for the info on the Yoga book, that looks interesting and useful. Guest guest
hi yes , theoretically i have read them all. Some of them repeat stuff which is in other books , so I just cross-read that, but other than skipping redundant stuff, I have read them. I not only have a daughter with DS, I work with DS kids as an OT, so thats why the list is sooo long Gundula > Very impressive list! Have you read them all?
