The temperature will be a moderate 2000 degrees with cooling winds upwards of around 700 miles per hour. It will definitely be a day for the sunblock, and it wouldn't hurt to shake the dust off the ol' lead suit in the closet. If you're planning on venturing outside in beautiful Afghanistan tomorrow, don't forget to drink plenty of fluids such as barium which shows up nicely when blasts of radiation flow through your body. Most of all, have fun out there in dusty Afghanistan and enjoy the old country while........ well, while it's still there. Guest guest
This humor doesn't help. It's never amusing to think of people dying. What our country has to contemplate in terms of retaliation is frightening beyond belief. Just as there were thousands of innocent people that died in the WTC terrorist attack, there are many innocent Afganistan peolpe that will be losing their lives due to American bombing and retaliation that may be necessary. In fact there are many that have already lost their lives due to our military actions. Justification for acts of war are small consolation to those left behind. A small child who loses a parent, sibling or friend in any country will grow up to hate the country that takes away their loved ones. You probably meant to be joking, but death and destruction aren't funny right now. It's time to have compassion in our hearts for our fellow humans. Life as we know it could depend on stopping blame, revenge and violence. Guest guest
Of course I'd feel different. But bad taste is still bad taste. It does nothing to help capture the culprits to demonstrate lack of feeling for the innocent ones who live in Afghanistan...who are in the vast majority. Talking lightly of bombing a country which is already largely rubble, which is already populated by other victims of the Taliban, does absolutely nothing but lower yourself to the level of the perpetrators. I realize that feelings are running high (mine too), but let's not posture ourselves as if this is a high school football game, with the biggest and the baddest coming out on top. Sadly, I suspect we'll all lose a great deal when all is said and done. This is indeed a tragedy, not a joke. Guest guest
Hi all, This is your moderator chiming in. In these strange days when so much of what we thought was permanent, safe and convenient (like the NYC skyline and air travel) has turned out to be anything but, and 6,000 American lives were snuffed out almost instantaneously by the machinations of a homicidal zealot on the other side of the world, there are bound to be differing opinions of the situation among rationale and intelligent people. Some people will deal with this with anger, some with humor, others with a more analytical approach (like our resident Web scholar Jack Pedersen, who is recovering as we speak from CTS decompression surgery. Get well soon, Jack!) As far as I am concerned, this is all fine for the listserve as long as it is labeled "OT" so that those who are not interested can delete e-mails they are not interested in without having to read them. Please be careful with overtly tasteless forwarded messages (Lyndon's was borderline, but I would not have stopped it, and I have been sent the same message by about a dozen friends from all over) but if you find something is offensive it's ok to post back why it bothers you. Personal attacks are never ok, however (not that I have seen any). Sometimes we as professionals need a place to air our feelings, and as long as it stays at a professional level this listserve can serve admirably in that regard.
