We discuss using a calculator for Maverick every year. He is in 6th grade

this year and still not using one. The sp ed teacher feels that it will stop

him from trying to learn to figure it out if we let him use a calculator. We

did discuss having him do the worksheets using touch points and

manipulatives, and then checking them himself with a caclulator, but it isn't

being done yet.

They actually say he is learning place value and division also. I'm not sure

I see him getting the concept, but they feel he is. When they do the DAPS he

actually tests out higher in math than in reading....and I always consider

him higher in reading.

I guess that we are going to push for him learning to use the calculator for

addition and subtraction. We have his IEP in a couple of weeks. With these

new IEP's they have to fit them into the standards and their direction may

not be mine, so we'll see. I don't like to overload the IEP with goals....

instead just make sure that he is learning...and see what comes up with the

class for him to work on.

So, my long winded answer to your question.. I think we should have started

the calculator last year,,,,,but not in 2nd grade when I first brought it up.

Does that make sense?

We introduced the calculator to Sara in 3rd grade. I talked with some on the

list and this was the grade that most of their children started. Im more into

" functional " skills now, yes Sara still adds on paper but she also uses the

calculator. I look at it this way, how many of us add on paper as adults?

heehee I know I don't lol so this was my reasoning.

Maybe .... some kids give up adding on paper when introduced with a tool that

is more functional ..... Sara hasn't lol she also uses the keyboard for

typing but very much enjoys writing letters by hand.

has been using a calculator since around 4th grade. She also can do

some operations without and doesnt really need it. but like last year, she

had this money to spend ( a class assignment). So say it was $20 and she

could buy like 2 items a radio and cds how much would she spend and how much

change would she get.

How else would she do that? I cant even do it without one!

Many times she uses it to check her work also. If she learns the operations

on a calculator and gets through her life like that, what would be so bad?

It's in the iep and has been since 4th.

Caty is in 5th grade. We still haven't started using calculators. We have

been using touchpoint math and manipulatives. She started out with small

numbers for a couple years. (adding and subtracting) Last year she started

doing problems that you 'carry' the number. (can't remember what they call

that, but that's what we called it when I was in school). She can do 3 digit

numbers for addition, 2 digit for subtraction. Caty will learn to use a

calculator, but I think we'll wait another couple years. As long as she can

try harder problems each year, I'm going to let her. As soon as she learns

about a calculator she will quit trying.

A few years ago Caty had a behavior assessment done and the person that did

it was just called a Behavior Specialist. (which probably means nothing,

unfortunately)

We started when was in 5th grade. We wanted him to have the concepts

down pat and determine how well he could learn them. We saw the calculator as a

tool to assist his comprehension.

Thanks everyone for your input. We are holding off on calculator for awhile.

The meeting seemed to go smoothly. Now we will have to see if they follow

through. One bit of good news I learned that our school psych. has been

transferred to another school!!!! This man should be fired he is so

incompetant, but at least I don't have to deal with him anymore.
