To whom that was getting shocked;

I,TURK, when i first got my icd the first 5 months got treated(shocked) 59 times over 3 month period. i went to my doctor and pleaded ecause i was walking aand talking in the hospital while having 180 to 190 beats per minute and unknowingly my doc had set it to 150 so he changed the parameters to getting paced at 195 6 times when it hits 180 if that doesnt work getting 3 7 jewel shocks then 3 17 jewel shocks then 3 32 jewel shocks. so you can tell your doctor to change parameters to according to what u have.

you see i was not even dizzy at 180 to 190 for 5 days at the hospital thank god but it depends on a person my heart goes up on BPM slowly so i never passed out outside except for the hospital. so I believe its up to the individuals.

Getting Zapped

Hi All,As I have been reading here - my heart goes out to all of you who have been zapped soooo many times....but I have to wonder - are the docs doing all they can do?Getting shocked is only supposed to happen in the WORST case scenerio, and not be a regular occasion for most of us. Unfortunately, some can get unstable over a period of time and have a flurry of activity, but it you are getting shocked on a repeated basis - I would march into your EP's office and demand that he/she fix it, or better yet, GET A NEW DOC!!!!We do not need to take this lying down - or sitting up, or in the grocery store or at the movies!!!I am an advocate for all of us to have our lives returned to the most normal we can!Merry Christmas to all of you! Turk,

Oh YES!!!!!!!! Been there, done that!!!!! I agree with you wholeheartedly!!!!

Although we all have similar conditions, we all have different parameters,

thus we need different settings.

Foe the rest of you, electric roos, have a good holiday, and a healthy new

I don't ever want to get zapped. That is an

experience I will gladly forego. I might not be

able to, might just be out of my hands, but for

some reason, I'll have it in the back of my mind

that I blew it. That is an irrational way of

thinking, I know, but still, getting zapped won't

make this any more real to me. I always feel the

alien gizmo, or I am scratching at the damn scar,

or wondering what fresh hell one of the docs is

gonna throw my way. Becca

I don't want to add fuel to the fire but, Everyday there is a little episode

of paranoya or a minor anxiety attack if you will. Does any one else feel

that way. I had to admit the fact that i might not have got over this fear

factor. (i think this is because i got zapped 59 times in three months when

i first got the zapper because I was allergic to the medicine). I know i'll

beat it one day. I think another reason for that is i stopped taking the

zoloft. So with that thought let me know how you feel people. Love TURK

This can be a dual edged sword. yes, it is good to know. but it is also bad to know. Becuase now you know what it feels like and how you react.

I've been zapped so many times that I live in fear on the days I get little sleep or am under alot of stress (my triggers). I thank the Lord that I have my ICD, but I am petrified of 'being saved'.

Yes, it was good to know - but now I'm scared.

Because I have never been zapped, I don't have the fear and anxiety that you

and others like Stacie have had. My doctor says that I don't have an

appreciation of how close I came to dying. He's right. I think I'm fine now

although the ICD says that I am being paced a lot.

I can't live in fear of getting zapped. I worry

more about what some doc might suggest I need,

than the gizmo going off. Then I wonder what's

right or what's wrong. And we're not supposed to

stress out over this, but seems like my stress

level shoots sky high after seeing one of them.

I've been as cross as two sticks all day because

I saw the valve guy yesterday. And it wasn't all

that bad...but it wasn't all that good either. Oh

well, I'll feel better once the summer ends.

Hi...i was a little hesitant to admit how i feel sometimes about getting zapped...but to be honest...i live with fear of this thing everyday.

My "treatments" have never made sense to me...received one while working in the yard...one while playing ping pong..one while putting my makeup on...none of then were consistant with exertion....so i am nervous about any activities that do require more than the usual effort...

My pacemaker paces 99% of the time...so I use my batteries up pretty quick...due for a new Icd this fall..so, more surgery...in the meantime i feel alot like you do Turk...and i take anti-anxiety drugs to cope with the level of fear...

Please dont get me wrong..i appreciate life and the value of my Icd...but it hurts like hell to get zapped and I am not looking forward to the next one...

approached....lucky for me no zaps since.....

when i get zapped it jolts me straight up and throws my arms up to the

left.....i always make sure i have a firm grip on the steering wheel when

driving...thank god it doesnt knowck me out cause i have to drive......i

live in the mountains....no bus, no taxi....not even a train within 40

miles....

Maybe when I do get zapped (I reckon it's

inevitable)I will be more afraid of it since

then, I will know what happens especially if it's

a bad trip. What Bob said about his experiences

made me think though. At least he knows what to

expect, and how to react or compensate for it.

Maybe we should have been given a trial run while

still tucked into our hosp beds. T minus 10, 9,

I wish I had a dime for everytime one of my doctors said, " You almost

Becca: I too hope that you never get zapped although I must admit that having

been zapped 7 times, I no longer view it as such a big deal. It's been 16

months since my last one but I can truly say that I rarely think about it and

when I do, it is usually during exercise or when my 9 year old daughter asks if

she should be worried when we are on the tandem together (shades of Turk's

questions from his girls). I know that others are much more concerned, many to

the point of requiring medication for the anxiety. Obviously, everyone handles

this differently but the good news is that we are still here to complain about

our conditions. Best wishes,

I woke up tubed and I pulled the damn thing out.

Ain't I a stinker? I don't remember a bit of it,

thank goodness. I lost about three weeks of

memory which is a good thing but I still wonder

if some of my current anxiety is something that

is lying there under the surface waiting to come

up and bite me. Becca

Amen to that! Right now I think I have been

through the worse thing I could go through so

far, and I did live. But I would be foolish to

believe that I will not ever be zapped. I asked

the valve guy Tues if I would ever get rid of the

gizmo even after having the mitral worked on and

he said oh noooo, that was there for life. Oh

joy! To whom should I will it? But I don't dwell

on the getting zapped aspect much at all. I am

listening closely to all our friends here about

their experiences, but you know as well as I, I

cannot know until it happens to me. Becca

Okay, there's another question y'all can answer for me . . . what's it

like when you get it changed? Same as the initial insertion? Better?

Worse?

I was in restraints so I couldn't do anything. My dh said I was

picking at it in my sleep. I only lost two days of memory. The ER

report says I was concious when I was brought in, but you couldn't

prove it by me. Getting that set of records and looking through it

told me a lot about what I missed and some things I probably shouldn't

know, like how high my BP was and how close I cam to stroking out and

how acidic my blood was.

bridget, i've had my little blessing since 1986.the changing of the battery is a breeze i'am back to work in three days.i'am not sure about the one in the chest, mine was in my stomach, until this last problem, after seventeen years the leads finally gave out,so they changed the machine from my stomach to my chest, still trying to get used to it. but like everything, this to shall pass. so don't worry the battery change is a walk in the park, compared to what we have all been through.. good luck... kathy

kathy, thanks for the info. I went through so much in 98-99 but have been doing quite well now and I just hate to go back for more surgery. But was glad to hear you didn't mind it much.
