This came over the news service on AOL this morning. p.s. what is the deal with abbreviating Oregon with "Ore." why not the "OR"?

Brazilian Health Sciences University to Adopt U.S. Curriculum

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- In the U.S. today more than ever, chiropractic is a dynamic area of health care, and opportunities for chiropractic physicians are steadily increasing due to both public and political acceptance of alternative forms of healthcare over the past four decades. This growth is based upon patient satisfaction, as well as on evidence that many conditions -- such as stress-related low back pain and headache -- respond better to chiropractic care than to other types of intervention. The rapidly aging "Baby Boomer" population, with their increased likelihood of mechanical and structural problems, contributes to the increasing demand for chiropractic care.

This trend towards a more natural approach to healthcare has also begun to influence the world outside of U.S. borders. The Universidade Anhembi Morumbi (UAM) in Sao Paolo began seeking curriculum to develop a chiropractic program at their institution to supplement their degreed program offerings. This 30-year-old accredited, independent liberal arts and sciences university provides education primarily for career and health-related professions such as pharmacology, veterinary medicine, nursing, physical therapy and dentistry to its population of over 10,000 students. They began a 5-year chiropractic program in May of 2000, and anticipate enrolling a class of between 60 and 110 students per year. UAM has developed the basic science education and clinic phase of training, but they needed help with development of curriculum for the chiropractic sciences (adjustive technique, NMS diagnosis and therapy, etc.) as well as the clinical sciences (radiographic interpretation, clinical pathology, physiological therapeutics and systems pathology and intervention).

UAM chose to evaluate chiropractic colleges in the U.S. as resources for established curriculum, since the U.S. is the birthplace of the chiropractic profession. The degree of excellence of a college's instruction is often reflected in their students' scores on board exams. This type of data may be considered as one gauge of an institution's academic quality. Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) graduates historically have some of the highest scores on their NBCE (National Board of Chiropractic Examiners) exams compared the to national average.

Dr. Lester Lamm, a multilingual Doctor of Chiropractic and Dean of Postgraduate Education at Western States Chiropractic College, was invited to meet with the President of UAM, Dr. , in Sao Paolo to discuss logistics and budget. During the visit, Dr. Lamm was asked to teach a course in normal radiographic anatomy in Spanish to the incoming class.

Dr. Lamm now also serves as Western States Chiropractic College's Project Director for the development of curriculum for the UAM chiropractic program. Lectures and laboratory demonstrations are housed on DVD's that can be voice-overlaid or reproduced in Portuguese. Supplemental notes for translation will accompany each lecture/lab session. The program will comprise approximately 2,000 hours of instruction. WSCC will produce the program in English and will also create the documents, protocols and procedures for the clinical phase of the student's education. The final curricular modules are scheduled to be delivered on or before December 31, 2003. Bracher, MD, D.C. is Dr. Lamm's Sao Paolo-based counterpart to the project, and he will be present in the classroom overseeing hands-on labs. Additional Doctors of Chiropractic will be involved as the program grows.
