Guest guest
Thanks to everyone giving me advice on this matter. I have it under control, i think. I get so much helpful information, not to mention have an advocate on top of it too, I know it will work out ok. We had the case conference last friday, and got inclusion, just like we wanted. This school system is very small, and the sped director quit at the last minute. That's ok. Austin's teacher called me tonight, just to make sure that Austin would be on the bus in the am, so she could meet him. She did this on her own, as his brother will be taking him to class every day. She's an older teacher, but she's open. She also knows that if it seems that Austin is having a hard time with the cirriculum, all she has to do is call, and we'll set a conference up to modify it for him. Thanks to everyone! Guest guest
Cheryl, What is the allowable time for a Sped child to ride a school bus in VA? I know we talked about this before, but I have CRS.
Guest guest
Don't forget that if the district tries to move the child to a more segregated placement, filing a due process also allows parents to invoke stay-put and keep the last agreed upon IEP and placement in effect. Seems like there has been an increase in LEA's unwillingness to include children with DS lately--not reassuring or a good time to be complacent. I have " heard " in the past that an hour was the limit for a reasonable time to spend on the bus. I checked the proposed regs and found no reference to time. I called Pupil Transportation and asked them ... guess what ... they said , " Gee no one has ever asked us that and after putting me on hold and going around the dept, they said it is not addressed in the regs, it is up to the individual LEAs and if a parent has a problem that is not resolved with LEA, the next step would be to contact VDOE. Of course, they mentioned that location should be considered, longer rides are norm for rural areas. And if a child with a disability is riding longer than a child without, that should be noted and mentioned. Sorry, not much help today! Guest guest
Do remember that in some states parents must put in writing that you are invoking the " stay put " clause of IDEA. If your state is one of those, write a letter and send it certified. That way they cannot move the child until the hearing is over.
