ZapUpdate

July 28th 1999

Greetings Everyone!

We are going to print a day early, to alert you to some new research which indicates the threat to an ICD from retail security scanners is MINIMAL! Many of our readers were concerned when a report last year indicated otherwise. That concern continues today, despite assurances from the scanner makers and many others such as our very reliable sources who work ever day in the field of electrophysiology.

The newest research (reported on our BREAKING NEWS page) provides what we consider the most realistic evaluation so far: There may be a limited threat if you linger in the scanning field for a prolonged period, but normal passage - even slowly - will not affect your implanted device.

One of the physicians quoted in the latest reports works for my old alma mater, Indiana University. I have sent him an invitation to join us for a ZAP•CHAT session, and hope to hear from him soon.

Again, there are several just released reports indicating what is good treatment and what is bad for various heart problems. We make it easy for your to access that information, but please keep this caveat in mind: What you read may or may not be applicable to your specific situation. NEVER alter your drug or activity routine without first discussing it with your doctor or cardiologist!

Also, please the consider the source of every report based on research results. Look who sponsored the investigation, and how the test samples were chosen. Second looks at those elements may reveal a vested interest in producing a specific final outcome and associated recommendation.

As we always say: Stay informed by obtaining as many different sources for information as possible. Make notes of what you think is applicable to your situation, and take them with you to your next appointment with the doctor. Make your decisions there... NOT in front of your computer screen!

In the last day or so, Jim posted an interesting note to the Zapper•BBS. He said his electrophysiologist told him most ICD recipients don't feel the difference between low energy cardioversion and high energy defibrillation. One guy responded he could not tell the difference, while another said she could. A third said he never even felt the low level therapy. How about you?

We set up a POLL through our ZAP•LIST PROGRAM and welcome your input. Either CLICK HERE, or click the word POLL on the eGroups.com nav bar the next time you visit the ZAP•LIST site.

We have gotten several positive notes about the information posted last week to help people deal with insurance companies, written by Sanny Silvius. If you missed the article, it's still available. Just CLICK HERE. Perhaps we can devote a ZAP•CHAT session to this issue in the near future. Please stay well.....

Duffey,

Zapper Publisher
