Guest guest
I've noticed so many names being withdrawn from this list because of the spamming. That can't be helped, I know so because if it could Duffey would already have done something about it. I urge you to think twice before disowning the group. Do you really think you can deal with the trials and tribulations of having an ICD on your own? This is coming from an old pro with over 150 shocks, even if I'm only 20. We're supposed to be a group of people who support eachother and to be honest it makes me a little mad that even after going through what it takes to get an ICD we would get mad over something so trivial as spamming. I refuse to be mad about the inconvenience of spamming but I will get mad about people deserting each other over an inconvenience. By the way, I am working in the University or Michigan's main pharmacology lab full time testing the effects of two drugs on the heart. I know that one is for atrial flutter because we have to do surgery on dogs in order to induce atrial flutter in them and use the drug to treat them (it's kind of fun telling people that I'm twenty and doing surgery ) but we are completely blinded in the second study. We have no idea what the drug is intended to be used for but it is our job to put it through all the tests for proarrhythmic effects. I am also working on a grant to test the effects of estradiol on the heart. For all the other women out there, that's what we think makes our hearts do crazy things when we get our period and we want to try to prove it and fix it. So I've been having a pretty good time this summer because I'm getting a chance to do what I want to do with the rest of my life.
Guest guest
Hi, I too recently had an AICD implant, just last Friday in fact. I am still VERY sore (OW) and was not expecting such intense post-op pain. It is scary to think that in a month I could find myself with multiple shocks and back in the hospital. The whole AICD thing is scary. My condition is ARVD (Arrythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia). I found this board a few weeks ago and have noticed that there seems to be not alot of activity on it. Perhaps that is because it is summer and everyone is going about their vacation busy-ness. I hope to hear from you and wish the best to your husband. Send him a hug from me, okay? Sometimes it helps to know someone (even if it is just a stranger in a similar situation) is thinking of you. Bless your heart, Laurie P.S. A note on the spam thing...I just delete it. It's a teensy little annoyance, and as far as I'm concerned, we all have much to be concerned with in our lives, so WHY SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF??? Keep in touch, will you? I'd like that. Guest guest
Thanks for your advice. However, my husband his ICD implanted at wood Hospital, NJ on JUne 28th, 2000. On Sunday July 23 experienced 3 major shocks and two mils ones altogether. He is now at wood hospital again. They have started him on AMIODARONE which I know is used for life threatening ventricular arrhythmias and comes as an utmost neccessity due to all its' major side effects. THANKS FOR YOR SHARING AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WHICH YOU HAVE STARTED. Guest guest
Hi--I have the same condition and received my implant in March. If you go to the Zapper web site and click on Zapperibs ( or something like that, you will see a daily discussion and e-mails on all sorts of icd topics. Guest guest
Hello all: I had my ICD implanted in January 1999. I've been shocked a few times over the past 18 months, and all of them with one exception happened between 3:30 and 5:30 in the morning. I also have severe sleep apnea. My family physician developed the theory that my arrythmmias were directly related to the apnea. Sleep tests indicated that I would often stop breathing for periods approaching two minutes at a time. The resulting oxygen deprivation causes the heart to beat faster, and triggers arrythmias which in turn set off the ICD. My doctor prescribed a device called a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure) to prevent me from stopping breathing. I sleep with the device every night and have not had a shock since. My cardiologist doesn't totally agree with the apnea-arrythmmia relationship theory; however, you can't argue with the results. If you have an ICD and suspect that you might be suffering from sleep apnea, I strongly urge you to get a sleep test and find out if CPAP therapy will help. Guest guest
From another experience, I have had my device for a little over 2 years and have yet to be zapped. Try not to worry about it much. It is time to live life, not fear it. Pete ____________________________________________ " If you want to live a long and happy life, get a chronic disease and manage it.
