Guest guest
Hi Nanci, Thanks for the welcome. It is so nice to read such warm emails. We seem to have some things in common. I live near Milwaukee. My panic attacks aren't really under control I don't think. I have tried medication for them but will not do that anymore. It takes too much of my energy away and makes me so tired I can't function. I actually did ok while my son was at his worst. I was too busy taking care of him that I had no time to think of myself. My youngest son was kinda forgotten about at times but was so wonderful about it all. My son's remission is good for now. He is just trying to overcome the emotions and a few slight effects. He is just so tried of being " weird " as he puts it. It just warms my heart on his good days though. There are more and more of those now too. Thanks again for you welcome. Oh and I am a total Taurus too and so is my husband. Talk about clashes! LOL In peace, Mo >From: " Nanci~ " <mystic1@...> >Reply-egroups ><egroups> >Subject: RE: ~*~ WELCOME MO ~*~ >Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 21:30:59 -0500 > >OMG ... Guest guest
Hi Mo!! Sorry its taken me so long to actually write and greet you!! I've got the flu now... sheesh! Always something isnt there!! " I joined this list because my son has Burkitt's Lymphoma. " Oh I am so sorry to here that. What is Burkitts? Lymphoma is not good.... but is beatable so lets hope that your little one wins the battle!! How are you coping with all of this? It must be so hard watching your child battle with such a serious illness. " I also suffer from Panic Attacks and High Blood Pressure. " Hon, considering what you would have had to go through over the last however long it has been it is of no wonder! Are you on any medications to help you, or have you found ways to cope with the stress like relaxation techniques etc? There are quite a few care givers on this list... so know that you are not alone. Any time you need to vent away just jump right in and vent!! Sware, curse, send inspirational stories or just bad jokes... what ever you need - we care, you are never alone! As Tina would say... welcome to our humble home! with love, Aisha. Guest guest
Hi! Degenerative disc disease is something that happens when the discs in your back protrude and in my case it is my two lowest discs, so it puts pressure on my nerves leading to my legs causing leg pain. It Causes a lot of low back pain and leg pain. I am learning to live with it, thanks to the help of a wonderful doctor. It was confirmed by MRI. It didn't help that I just had to have a complete hysterectomy and had to stay off my feet for a while. The more I lay down the more my back and legs hurt. So now I am in early menopause thanks to the hysterectomy. I hope you are doing well. If you ever need to talk, I will always listen. I hope you have a great weekend. Best wishes,

Guest guest
I am so glad to hear your son is in remision. I pray that he stays that way. It is hard when your kids are so sick. Anyone would be stressed out under your circumstances. My heart goes out to you. Both my 5 an 11 year old have asthma but that is not nearly as serious as what you are going through. I am glad he is feeling better. I bet that does make you feel better and give you hope for a bright future for him and the rest of your family. Have a nice weekend. Guest guest
Hi Mo ... how are you doing today? Isn't it nice to read all the wonderful email here? Everyone is so kind and supportive! Yes we do have a lot in common. I am originally from IL (Chicago area), so either way you are about in the middle *S* ... I know what you mean about the meds ... I am so dragged out and that is NOT me, but without the meds I was really bad off ... I'm hoping now with counseling I can wean off of them and get my life somewhat back? Are you doing any counseling to help yourself or relaxation or anything? You have actual anxiety attacks? I have GAD where I am anxious ALL the time and was having some really STRANGE symptoms that I couldn't even explain to the doctors. I can remember being at my worst and even sitting at a stop light would make me want to just jump out of the car I couldn't stand to be still and the thoughts in my head were making me bonkers LOL ... not voices, just obsessive thinking ... I'm a Type A, left-brained, analytical perfectionist LOL ... no wonder I have GAD huh? I would think that your son understood that you needed to be with the older boy while he was sick so I hope you don't harbor any guilt about that. I'm sure he was still well taken care of : ) ... I'm so happy to hear about your son's remission ... I hope he continues to get better each day and that yucky feeling of being weird which we can all relate too goes away. It's so much harder for kids. That's so sweet how you say it warms your heart to see his good days ... I'm glad to hear he's having more of them. Is there a chance it will ever come back? I just hope he con lead a normal life now and that miraculously it never rears it's ugly head!!!!! When are your boy's birthdays? LOL at both you and hubby being Taurus's ... that must be challening to say the least ... my daughter is so Taurus it's not funny so I can't imagine 2, but then again great minds think alike right???? Good luck with everything and if you ever need to talk I'm here : ) Have a nice week! Nanci~ Hi Nanci,Thanks for the welcome. It is so nice to read such warm emails. I myself AM a whiner ... anyway I am from Bensenville which is right by O'hare and had lived their my whole life up until 10 years ago when I was transferred up to WI which I liked at first, but now hate LOL. Northwestern was my daughter's first choice, but then she switched majors and decided on U of I. Where were you from? How do your daughters like NW? It's a really good school. I miss home so much ... where do you live now? I give you a lot of credit for going to see them ... I hope you enjoy very much! Take care ... Whiner Nanci~! Guest guest
Hi Sheena, He isn't on chemo now. He is in remission. I have asked the Dr before about supplements and he says he has no opionion either way. I have thought about it but I don't know how to go about finding what would work best for him. There is so much information out there. I had one friend tell me that Gingko Biloba was good but I am not sure. If you had some info on what might help I would welcome it. Guest guest
HI NANCI,I MUST CONFESS I AM HAVING A REALLY BAD DAY MY SISTER HAS DEEPLY HURT ME BY SOME COMMENTS SHE HAS MADE. WE HAVE A VERY LONG AND BAD HISTORY AND IT SEEMS EVERTIME I TELL HER HOW I AM FEELING SHE MAKES IT SOUND LIKE I AM THE BAD ONE. SHE MAKES ME FEEL GUILTY AND SAYS HORRIBLE THINGS TO ME. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SO SUPPORTIVE OF HER BUT SHE THINKS I AM OUT TO GET HER. I JUST DON'T GET IT. ALL I CAN DO IS PRAY FOR HER AND TRY NOT TO LET HER UPSET ME I GUESS. >>> I'm so sorry to hear about your sister and her comments. Don't they always seem to come from the people you need the most support from? Been there done that and it SUCKS! You're right though; don't let it bother you; it's her problem. I think your attitude about praying for her is good, but that doesn't take away the pain I know. I LOVE THIS LIST. IT IS SO HELPFUL TO KNOW THERE ARE CARING AND WONDERFUL PEOPLE OUT THERE. IT JUST SADDENS ME THAT AN ILLNESS HAS BROUGHT US ALL TOGETHER. I AM GLAD TO KNOW I HAVE A CYBER FAMILY I CAN TURN TO. >>> I know what you mean. The people her are so wonderful and encouraging even though they are going through some crappy stuff themselves. It is sad an illness has brought us together, but then what would we do without each other? If it weren't for my online support I'd have none ... I'm glad I have you all to turn to also. I AM NOT REALLY DOING COUNSELING FOR MY PROBLEM BUT WE ARE FOR MY SON'S CANCER. YES I HAVE TERRIBLE ATTACKS. I AM THANKFUL THEY AREN'T WORSE. I GET SO SCARED AND SOMEDAYS CAN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE. IT IS HELPING VERY MUCH. >>> I'm sorry you are having such terrible attacks. I know exactly how you feel though. I would be very interested in hearing about your online counselor because it sounds as if it is helping immensely. I am glad you aren't on meds; in fact I'm jealous. I've been on Klonopin for 3+ years and the thought of going off of it with all the withdrawal and not knowing what my anxiety will do makes me sick to my stomach. Please email me privately about your counselor if you don't mind : ) I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY STRANGE SYPTOMS. I HAD ONE DR TELL ME THAT IT WAS ALL IN MY HEAD AND I NEEDED TO GROW UP. I NEVER WENT BACK TO HIM!! >>> LOL ... not literally (sarcastically), but that's exactly what I was told ... it's all in your head ... just go home and take Paxil; you'll feel better. SH*T ... it made me feel 10 times worse. It wasn't in my head you A**HOLES! I also switched docs, but they all said the same thing and with all the tests showing nothing I don't know what else to do? >MY YOUNGEST WAS SO WONDERFUL HE ONLY WANTED TO MAKE HIS BROTHER FEEL BETTER. THE OLDEST ONE WAS SOOOOOOO MEAN TO HIM THOUGH. THE YOUNGER ONE WOULD JUST SAY HE DOESN'T FEEL GOOD BUT STILL LOVES ME. MAKES YOU WANT TO HUG AND KISS HIM ALL OVER FOR BEING SO BRAVE. For a boy that young to understand is so wonderful though; you must be doing something right *S* ... I'm sorry that your sister seems to be causing so many problems, but if it's any consellation, my whole family sucks! Your boys sound wonderful ... what are their names btw? Guest guest
Hello, I just read Nanci and your email, I couldn't help but write. I have had a lot of problems with my sister and brother. My sister is selfish. My sister is older then me by four years, she had a baby at 17. I raise dher child the first 1 year and a half of his life, so she could work and go to college. I was there for her and I was much younger then her. Till this day, she doesn't realize what I did for her, and she makes me feel as if whatever I do or so, isn't very important. My brother says most of the comments. I have a bad back, bad asthma, arthritis, and now a stomach problem which I'm just starting to get testing down. My brother thinks that every thing is in my head, or that I've making these things up to get attention. Even after I had surgery, he still says these things. He tells me that I need to grow up and realize that I'm not always going to get the attention all the time. He insults me. My sister just acts like she cares less about my health issues. I fully understand what you are going through. I have and still am going through it myself. Try to be strong. I know it hurts deeply. Try your hardest to be strong and to talk to your sister. Guest guest
I am having a writing spat tonight, you will al be telling me to go get a hobby or something. Anyway Hello Leigh, Hows things going? Just read what you said about you sister and brother and I am so mad for you. It is back to one of the most regular topics on here " how nasty family can be " or what a pile of shits they can be!!! You sound like you are having a rough time of it, poor babes. Sounds like your sister puts herself first and is VERY selfish! Do you see them a lot? Do you have any understanding support? Hope you find out what is happening with your stomach? I had asthma when I went to England for a year, I have no trouble here in Australia, unless heavy dust or chemicals but take no meds whereas over there was puffing away on meds all the time even ended up in hospital, happy I live here for sure!!! Just wanted to say you sound real tough to put up with that shit and hang in there and we are here when you need us and even if you don't need us write anyway, otherwise we all be sat checking our e-mail with no messages feeling as if no-one loves us! Lots of love Nerys
Guest guest
Nervys, I have been through a lot in my life. I let it take over my life and I payed for it. I woke up one day, and faught back. I even push myself to the limits, thinking that if I don't, i'll end up like I was before. My family isn't there, but half of it is my fault. I don't tell them. My sister and brother are hardly there though. I know they love me and I love them. My family is close. This is why I don't understand why they are like this? They don't realize they are like this. Anyways, I love it when people say I'm tough because in my eyes, I have to be tough to survive. Thanks for seeing me as being tough. Guest guest
Hi...Mo....here';s a newsletter about cancer and supplements. You're right a person needs to know what to take....otherwise it could prove fruitless. apparently a balance of antioxidants is the best way..not just lots of one and a bit of another. I have more info if you wish to read more after this.Sheena BIONUTRITION NEWSLETTER Jan/Feb 2000 High Doses of Multiple Antioxidants-----Essential Ingredients in Improving the Efficacy of Standard Cancer Therapy: A Review of the Medical Literature This newsletter is going to challenge the conventional medical wisdom when it comes to the use of nutritional supplements in patients who are receiving traditional cancer therapy. Every time I consult a patient who has just been diagnosed with cancer or every time I speak the question of whether they should be taking nutritional supplements while they are receiving chemotherapy or radiation comes up. I would venture to guess that less than 10% of the radiation therapists and oncologists support the use of nutritional supplements by their patients. This obviously leaves me in the minority and it always leaves me in a difficult situation trying to explain why everyone who is in this situation needs to be on the most potent antioxidant combination they can find---(USANA). I hope that this newsletter, which is solely devoted to presenting my arguments about this situation, will give you more confidence in sharing my recommendations on nutritional supplements with those patients who have cancer. Why are the oncologists and radiation therapists concerned about the use of nutritional supplements in their patients who are receiving standard cancer therapy? They argue that their treatments use oxidative stress (free radicals) to destroy the cancer cells. They feel that if patients build up their antioxidant defenses via supplementation in order to protect them from the treatments that it could also build up the antioxidant defense system of the cancer cells and reduce the effectiveness of their treatments. They do not have any medical studies to support their concern; however, it is theoretically a legitimate possibility. So again, I turn to the medical literature to present my case for nutritional supplements in this situation. The efficacy of standard therapy for those patients who have cancer involves surgery (whenever possible), chemotherapy, and radiation therapy has reached a plateau, and for most solid tumors it remains ineffective. Physicians are looking for better and more effective ways to treat their cancer patients. Obviously, these treatments carry a tremendous amount of morbidity and mortality for our patients. Wouldn't any oncologist and radiation therapist want to be able to enhance the effectiveness of their standard therapies while at the same time protecting them from their horrible and sometimes live threatening side effects. Well, as you will see as you read this article, nutritional supplements offer both of these possibilities. Individual antioxidants have been studied for their anti-cancer properties. The most studied antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, and carotenoids. I will review these studies. The Anti-Cancer Properties of Vitamin A: The effectiveness of vitamin A depends on the type and amount that was used. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of some cancers. At high doses, variable extents of tumor size reduction have been reported. Vitamin A however, has been shown to have very little or no effect on several human tumors, which include melanoma, non-small cell lung carcinoma, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Some of the variants of vitamin A have been shown to produce extreme toxicity, especially when used in higher doses. Most researchers in this area agree that the use of single antioxidant vitamins, which require very high doses for its effectiveness, has no value in the treatment of cancer. Anti-Cancer Properties of Vitamin C: Vitamin C has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in both animal and human studies. There are other studies, which show that vitamin C at lower doses can actually stimulate the growth of cancer cells. Linus ing has shown that the use of 10 gms of sodium ascorbate can prolong and improve the quality of life in cancer patients. Other researchers have disputed these studies; however, they used straight ascorbic acid. There has been no significant toxicity related to these higher doses of vitamin C except for occasional GI upset. Medical studies are now showing us that calcium ascorbates are actually safer and more effective in patients with cancer. However, there is still a concern of using vitamin C alone in cancer patients. Anti-Cancer Properties of vitamin E There has been several studies that have shown that vitamin E used in supplementation will inhibit the growth and increase the cell death of various cancers. Research studies are showing the d-alpha-tochopherol succinate is the most potent form of vitamin E in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and causing increase cell death of these cancer cells. The higher antioxidant and biological effect of this natural form of vitamin E has also been demonstrated in several different studies. Anti-Cancer Properties of the Carotenoids There are over 1000 different carotenoids. However, the most common ones are beta- carotene, lycopene, and lutein. Most of the studies have been done using these carotenoids. They have been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and in the case of leukoplakia (a pre-cancerous tumor) has shown dramatic reversal. Lycopene has been shown to decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Beta-carotene has also been shown to decrease the damage to normal cells by radiation therapy. It is felt that a combination of carotenoids is the best recommendations for patients with cancer. Anti-Cancer Properties of B Vitamins There have not been any studies, which are showing major benefits with the B vitamins and cancer treatment. Vitamin B3 may enhance the radiation response of some tumors. However, all in all most of the studies show that supplementation with a single vitamin could actually be harmful. Efficacy of a Mixture of Antioxidants The use of individual antioxidants in cancer patients produces varying results and only at very high levels, which in the case of some may cause significant toxicity. The lower doses of single antioxidants have been shown to actually increase tumor growth. However, when researches looked at combining these antioxidant nutrients, they were able to demonstrate a marked inhibition of cancer cell growth. These antioxidants were given at levels that if used alone would produce no results or even enhance the cancer growth. When individual antioxidants were increased within the mixture, there was further reduction on the cancer. These studies and others are leading clinicians like me to recommend mixtures of good doses of several antioxidants (Usana Mega-Antioxidant) and to push some of the more potent antioxidants like Coquinone and Proflavanol. Higher doses of vitamin E in the form of d-alpha-tocopherol succinate and Usana's new E-prime may actually increase the effectiveness of my recommendation for cancer patients. The Effectiveness of Antioxidants in Combination with Standard Cancer Therapies Most of the studies that have been performed with single antioxidants both in the lab and within the body have shown an enhancement of the chemotherapeutic medications. However, there is an occasional study, which has shown a negative effect when a single antioxidant is used with a particular chemotherapeutic drug, i.e. synthetic beta-carotene and 5-FU. When these same antioxidants are used in combination with several other antioxidants, there is only enhancement of the effectiveness of the drugs. Most oncologists and radiation therapist remain skeptical with the use antioxidant vitamins in their patients who are receiving standard cancer therapies. Since both the chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation use the production of excessive free radicals to destroy or inhibit the growth of the tumor, they are worried that the cancer cells will be more resistant to their treatments. However, except for a rare situation where only a single antioxidant is used this does not hold true when you examine the medical studies that are available. In fact, just the opposite occurs. Those cancer patients receiving standard cancer therapies and are also taking a combination of antioxidant vitamins and their supporting nutrients actually have significantly better results than those patients who simply take the standard therapies. In other words, the effect of a mixture of antioxidants in combination with tumor therapeutic agents will greatly enhance the survival rates of these patients. Now this is just the exact opposite result that all of these physicians would expect. Why is this happening? The medical literature is showing us that antioxidant supplements actually protect the normal cells while at the same time make the cancer cells more vulnerable to the traditional cancer therapies. These findings can be attributed to the fact that cancer cells accumulate these antioxidants at very high levels because of the cancer cells altered feedback mechanism that has gone array. This excessive intracellular accumulation of these antioxidant vitamins affects many of the biochemical events in the cancer cells: a) Suppressing many of the growth stimulating signals of these cancer cells Cell differentiation c) Enhancing affect on synthesis and secretion of growth factor-Beta and protein-21, both of which are powerful inhibitors of cell growth In lay terms, the cancer cells just keep taking up the antioxidants to very high levels. So instead of protecting these cancer cells, they actually inhibit their growth and proliferation while at the same time leads to greater cell death. When they are used with standard chemotherapeutic treatments, they actually enhance the effectiveness of these therapies. The Other Great Benefit of Antioxidants: Reduction of the Toxicity of Standard Cancer Therapies Normal cells are actually protected from the toxic affects of these standard cancer treatments because normal cells will not take excessive amounts of antioxidants. They will however, be able to build up their natural antioxidant defense systems so that they are performing at optimal levels. Here are just a few of the positive benefits found in the medical literature: 1) Vitamin E reduces bleomycin-lung fibrosis, adriamycin-induced cardiac toxicity, and skin necrosis. Vitamin E also has been shown to protect normal cells from radiation damage. 2) Coenzyme Q10 has also been shown to protect against adriamycin-induced cardiac toxicity. 3) Beta-carotene reduces the adverse effects of radiation and some chemotherapeutic drugs. Since most of the side effects caused by the standard cancer therapies are caused by the excessive free radicals they produce, it only makes common sense that cancer patients would tolerate these medications better and recover from their treatments quicker. This has truly been my clinical experience. When patients follow my nutritional supplement recommendations for cancer found on my web site, they have had very positive experiences. I remember when a 21 year old girl told me that she had gone into remission after receiving her standard cancer therapy, her oncologists came over to her and said, " What are you taking? " She asked why? He said, " I have been watching you for weeks and you are over her reading your magazines when all of my other patients are vomiting out their guts. Not only are you now in remission, but you did so well throughout the treatments. " She informed that she has been on Usana. (In fact, we had to send him the product information book). I have heard this kind of story dozens of times with my patients. The review of the medical literature has just convinced me even more now that what I am recommending is correct. This is a very emotional topic among physicians and patients alike. Many patients will blindly follow their doctors' recommendations because they are dealing with a life- threatening disease. I have focused this newsletter solely on the decision of whether patients with cancer should take supplements while receiving standard cancer therapies. My advice to my patients is to start the recommended nutritional supplements as soon as they have been diagnosed with cancer. This allows them time to begin to build up their own antioxidant defense system (even a week or two prior to starting treatments is beneficial). They should not take single antioxidants. They need to take a product that is complete and balanced like Usana. Then they can push the amount of CoQ10 and Proflavanol that they take. I am also going to start to recommend that they take E-prime along with the vitamin E that they get in their Mega-Antioxidant. I personally believe that someday in the future (it may take 10 to 15 years) everyone who is diagnosed with cancer will be encouraged by their physician to take high-quality complete and balanced nutritional supplements. They not only help our own bodies to fight the cancer but it will enhance their therapies and help protect the patient from the treatments horrible side effects. If you are trying to help a family member or a friend who has been diagnosed with cancer, I would encourage you to show them this newsletter and my specific nutritional recommendations for cancer patients found on my web page. If they want the medical references on which I based this newsletter, have them get a copy of the following review article from their local medical library usually found in their hospital.
