Thanks, Marinka! Sounds nasty.

You are giving me the opportunity to remind all members to make sure to have

anti-virus software installed, keep the virus definitions up-to-date, and

run a virus scan of your system on a regular basis. Also, back up those

critical, irreplaceable files!

Before we go any further on this, Marinka, have you personally checked

to see if this is not a scam? If yes, where have you checked, and who

told you what?

My husband works at a computer help desk for people's Internet service. His

floor got a bunch of calls from people whose computers seemed to have got

this virus. It makes it so that you e-mail times out and shuts off in

exactly 2 minutes and 15 seconds. He said they started getting these calls

the day after the news said that the Chinese sent a worm virus to the U.S.

They're not sure it's the same virus, but they think it is. All the calls

they got were from the East Coast.

I don't know if it is the same one. It may be a different one. I just read

about the worm virus at

http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.wormmm (DOT) html

and it sounds like a different one. This link tells about the virus and how

to get rid of it. They do both mess with e-mail, but I don't know if they're

related. Both came out about the same time though.

So what we are left with, is this " warning " could be another hoax that

goes around. What are we accomplishing by sending out messages that

might or might not be true, that the sender has not checked out? This

is like shouting " fire " in a crowded theatre before first checking to

see if there really is a fire. Or even smoke. There are places on the

internet where you can check these things out.

I sent a link to one of those places. It very strongly appears that this

one is not a hoax. It's been on the news, information about it is on the

Mcafee Virus company http://dispatch.mcafee.com/default.asp

I don't think anyone is crying wolf this time, although there definately is

a lot of junk and hoaxes that go through the internet. It may not be the

same one my husband is dealing with, but it appears to be real. We may have

more than one going strongly at this time.

I got two messages just like the one described below. One was from a

stranger and the other from someone I knew. I was curious to know

what it was so I tried to open it on freenet. It wouldn't work so I

sent it to hotmail. It was scanned and the virus scanner told me

that it had a virus and that it wouldn't open it. So it is really a

virus. Since I didn't get it open I don't know what it does. Lucky

for me! I guess the best thing to do is scan all attachments before

you open them since many virus warnings are hoaxes.
