foods has largely lost in processing. Whole foods also tend to be high in

dietary fiber, which sweeps food wastes out of the intestines before they become

difficult to digest for some people. Many Asians traditionally prefer eating

fermented soy, in the forms of miso (a salty soy paste) and tempeh (a textured,

fermented soy product). If you eat tofu, try including seaweed (as the Japanese

traditionally do) or a little fish or chicken to enhance its digestibility.

Green Tea: A Potent Antioxidant (Top)

Yet another " health secret " that we have learned from the Japenese is green tea,

which has amazing cancer-fighting abilities. This best-selling brew, which

happens to be the most popular beverage in Asia (and the most widely consumed

drink in the world after water!), contains potent antioxidants called

polyphenols that seem to stop cancer dead in its tracks. In one study, for

example, Japanese smokers who drank green tea cut their risk of lung cancer by

45 percent-which helps explain why Japanese people have both the highest smoking

rates and the lowest lung-cancer rates in the developed world.

Laboratory studies indicate that the polyphenols in green tea not only

neutralize free radicals and stop tumor growth, but block the formation of toxic

compounds in the body that could promote cancer in the first place. In addition,

green tea inhibits the growth of viruses and bacteria and, like other

antioxidants, protects your heart by lowering cholesterol levels. Besides, with

about half the caffeine of coffee and none of its other nerve-rattling side

effects, a cup of green tea makes a pleasant natural coffee substitute when you

need a midday energy boost.

Try adding several cups of green tea to your diet daily-or for more potent

antioxidant protection, take the concentrated extract in supplement form.

Chlorella, Spirulina, And Kelp: Super Foods From The Water (Top)

When the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Mexico 500 years ago, the Aztecs they

encountered ate a diet rich in spirulina, a high-protein algae grown on the

surface of fresh water lakes. In recent years spirulina and its close cousin

chlorella have become popular additions to energy bars and green drinks for

their proven ability to boost stamina and vitality. Now recent research

indicates that these green " superfoods " have cancer-fighting abilities too.

In addition to important vitamins, minerals, natural antioxidants, and essential

amino acids, spirulina and chlorella contain extremely high concentrations of

chlorophyll, which inhibits cancer growth by protecting cell DNA from

free-radical and radiation damage. These nutrient-rich plant foods also boost

the immune system and draw possible carcinogenic toxins from the body. In one

study, children who were exposed to radiation near Chernobyl showed enhanced

immune function and decreased radiation when they were given spirulina for 45

days following the reactor disaster.

To get your daily dose of these potent microalgae, take them in supplement form,

either alone or as part of a multinutrient formula.

Incidentally, fresh water lakes aren't the only source of cancer-fighting

superfoods. The ocean also yields a rich bounty in the form of sea vegetables,

which are full of essential minerals and trace minerals. Studies in Japan reveal

that regular consumption of seaweed reduces the likelihood of contracting

certain kinds of cancer. Kelp in particular has been correlated with lower

breast cancer rates, and phytonutrients derived from this nutritious sea

vegetable seem to protect mucous membranes from cancerous activity. Kelp powder

makes a great natural salt substitute that adds seaweed flavor to soups and

salads, or you can learn to cook with seaweed as the Japanese do. If the

distinctive taste doesn't appeal to you, look for kelp and its cousins in

supplement form.

As you may already know, the human body is two-thirds water. A healthy body is

like a clear mountain lake, with fresh streams flowing in and out, bringing

a trickle, however, the lake would become stagnant and cloudy with plant life.

one of the body's primary antioxidants, with the power to block the formation of

certain carcinogens and to keep free radicals from inflicting cancer-causing

damage on your cells. Vitamin C works best in conjunction with its cohorts

vitamin E, beta carotene, and selenium-in fact, one of its main functions is to

restore vitamin E's potency when the fat-soluble antioxidant is depleted by

free-radical activity.

Research indicates that vitamin C is especially effective in preventing cancers

of the intestinal tract (mouth, esophagus, stomach, and colon), and there is

convincing evidence that it also helps stop breast and uterine cancers before

they start. Perhaps even more important, studies reveal that people who take

vitamin C supplements live longer than those who don't!

Though it's abundantly available in many fruits and vegetables, this

water-soluble vitamin is easily depleted. To make the most effective use of its

cancer-fighting potential, take a supplement containing 500 to 3,000 mg daily,

preferably in combination with vitamin E, selenium, and bioflavonoids.

Vitamin E

A fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that does its important

cancer-prevention work in parts of the body that other vitamins and antioxidants

can't reach-for example, the fatty portion of cell membranes and the fat

molecules that circulate in the bloodstream. Because heavy metals and other

toxins tend to accumulate in fatty tissue, vitamin E plays a particularly

important role.

This essential nutrient is also a powerful immune booster, and numerous studies

agree that people with high vitamin E levels are far less likely to contract

cancer than those whose levels are low. Unfortunately, of all the major

vitamins, E is the hardest to obtain from purely dietary sources. To make sure

you get an adequate supply, take a supplement offering at least 500 IU of

natural vitamin E daily.

Beta-Carotene

Often called provitamin A because it readily converts to this nutrient in the

liver, beta-carotene also has some extraordinary cancer-fighting properties of

its own. In addition to providing the well known immune-stimulating,

infection-fighting power of vitamin A, beta carotene is a potent antioxidant

that diminishes the likelihood of several cancers-particularly lung, stomach,

and breast cancer. Along with its close cousins, the other carotenoids,

including lycopene and lutein, help to keep cells functioning the way they were

meant to function (rather than becoming cancerous) and also promotes the healthy

detoxification that occurs in the liver.

Fortunately, beta-carotene and the other carotenoids occur in abundance in

yellow, orange, red, and dark green fruits and veggies-everything from

watermelon and tomatoes to spinach, kale, and of course the vegetable for which

these nutrients are named, carrots. Fresh juices are a great way to get your

quota of carotenoids. To boost your intake, you can also take a daily

multinutrient supplement containing up to 20,000 IU of mixed carotenoids.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The omega-3 oils contribute to cancer prevention by stimulating your liver to

eliminate toxins and by inhibiting inflammation, which tends to increase the

production of cancer-causing free radicals. The omega-3 oils are found in

abundance in:

a.. Deep- and cold-water fish (such as salmon, cod, tuna, halibut, mackerel,

and sardines)

b.. Certain nuts and seeds (such as flax and hemp)

Studies demonstrate that people who eat large quantities of ocean-going fish

have lower cancer rates than those who don't, and researchers have correlated

this statistic with the consumption of omega-3 oils. These potent

cancer-fighters have other benefits as well:

a.. Reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis, colitis, allergies, and

asthma

b.. Lower blood pressure

c.. Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease

The best way to get your daily dose of omega-3 is to eat plenty of saltwater

fish. Flaxseed oil is also a popular source, but beware-this volatile oil turns

rancid easily and must be refrigerated. A more reliable alternative is to take

flaxseed or fish oil capsules with food-1,000 mg three times daily. Choose a

reliable brand, and make sure the fish oil has not been processed with the toxic

chemical methanol and is well preserved with an antioxidant such as vitamin E.

CoQ10, Lipoic Acid, and Grape Seed Extract

As I mentioned earlier, the best way to guard against cancer is to take plenty

of antioxidants. Three of the most powerful antioxidant supplements on the

market today are coenzyme-Q10 (CoQ10), alpha-Lipoic acid, and grape seed

extract.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Essential for energy production in every cell of the body, coenzyme Q10 is

especially concentrated in the heart, where it's required to keep this tireless

organ healthy and strong. Studies also reveal that low CoQ10 levels have lead to

increased cancer risk, and that the supplement can actually shrink breast cancer

tumors. To reap its many benefits, take 60 to120 mg daily.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Produced naturally by the body, alpha-Lipoic acid enhances the potency and

prevents the depletion of other essential antioxidants like vitamins C and E.

Unique among antioxidants in being both fat and water soluble (and therefore

reaching all parts of the body), this vitamin-like compound supports the liver

in eliminating toxic chemicals, especially heavy metals, and may even block the

activation of cancer-causing DNA! Like CoQ10, alpha-Lipoic acid may become

deficient with age, so be sure to take it in supplement form-at least 50 mg

daily.

Grape Seed Extract

For extra antioxidant protection, you may want to add grape seed extract, which

contains some of the most potent free-radical fighters known-as much as 20 times

more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times more powerful than vitamin E. For best

results, take 30-100 mg of a high-potency extract daily.

Selenium

Although it's merely a trace mineral (meaning that it's required by the body in

very small doses), selenium is actually one of the most potent cancer-preventing

nutrients known. It's an essential component of the body's primary antioxidant,

known as glutathione peroxidase, which helps the liver eliminate toxins from the

body and protects your heart, blood vessels, and other vital organs and tissues

from the ravages of aging and disease, particularly cancer. In one study, people

who took selenium supplements were half as likely to die of cancer as those who

didn't. Other studies indicate that people who live in areas with selenium-poor

soil are far more likely to contract cancer than those who live in selenium-rich

regions.

Though this crucial mineral is generally found in a number of foods, you can

never be sure about the quality of the soil in which these foods were grown. You

can give yourself added insurance against cancer by taking 100-200 mcg of

selenium daily, preferably in combination with zinc and calcium, which have

immune-boosting properties.

Glutathione

No discussion of cancer-fighting nutrients would be complete without mentioning

glutathione, the most abundant antioxidant in the body. Manufactured naturally

from protein, glutathione has a number of essential functions that help keep

your body cancer-free:

a.. Needed in the liver to completely eliminate toxins and to neutralize the

free radicals that are generated as a by-product of detoxification

b.. Enhances immune function and is found in abundance in white blood cells

c.. Has a unique ability to bind and remove toxic heavy metals, such as lead,

arsenic, and mercury

d.. Helps in the production, defense, and repair of DNA

e.. Chemically stable; retains its free-radical-fighting properties longer

than most other antioxidants, and has the ability to restore vitamins C and E

and other antioxidants once they've become oxidized themselves

As a supplement, glutathione itself is difficult to absorb but you can take NAC,

a major precursor of glutathione, to make sure your body has an ample supply. I

recommend at least 50 mg of NAC daily, but you can take up to 600 mg if you

choose.
