Guest guest
How To Prevent Cancer How You Can Prevent Cancer Prevent Cancer With A Whole Foods Diet Chlorella, Spirulina, And Kelp The Wonders of Soy Water Green Tea Supplement Your Diet With Nutrients As researchers have clearly identified the causes of cancer, the process by which it develops, and the factors that help to inhibit its growth, alternative healthcare practitioners have established sound guidelines that anyone can follow for living a cancer-free life. You can now drastically reduce your risk of ever contracting this dreaded disease by: a.. Eating a whole foods diet rich in cancer-fighting nutrients b.. Taking certain nutritional supplements c.. Leading a healthy lifestyle The alternative approach to cancer prevention has four separate but interdependent aspects: a.. Avoid carcinogens b.. Increase antioxidant activity c.. Support the immune system d.. Expedite natural detoxification Avoid Carcinogens Every day we're bombarded with substances and energies, both inside and outside our bodies, that have the potential to spur new cancer growth. Though many of these factors are impossible to avoid, we can take proactive measures to minimize the carcinogens in our environment and stop the cancer-causing process before it starts. Increase Antioxidants Activity Antioxidants are substances that inhibit the proliferation of free radicals in the body, which eventually lead to cancerous activity if unchecked. Though the body produces some of the antioxidants it needs, most are ingested with the food we eat. By consuming a diet fortified with antioxidant-rich supplements, we can counteract the production of cancer-causing free radicals and thereby neutralize the unavoidable impact of carcinogens. Support The Immune System Cancer cells form constantly even in the healthiest bodies. The immune system, which includes the skin and mucous membranes as well as white blood cells and various other natural killer cells, has the crucial task of destroying and eliminating cancer before it can take hold. Healthy lifestyle, diet, and nutritional supplementation can support your body's natural defenses in meeting the challenge of keeping cancer at bay. Expedite Natural Detoxification Before your immune system gets wind of a problem, your body's normal detoxification paths (including the intestines, liver, and lymph system) are actively eliminating potential carcinogens from the body. If your intestines are backed up with poorly digested food and your liver is deficient in certain essential nutrients or overwhelmed with the toxic byproducts of digestion, you may be awash in poisonous, carcinogenic sludge without even knowing it. Herbs, supplements, and foods that promote healthy detoxification can reduce your cancer risk significantly. Prevent Cancer With A Whole Foods Diet (Top) The Advantages Of Going Organic | Cruciferous Vegetables And Garlic You probably already know that fresh vegetables and a tofu burger beat French fries and a Big Mac hands down when it comes to nutrition. It is easy to be lured by the gourmet enchantments of fancy sauces and rich desserts, or you may simply be too busy to treat yourself to the foods you know you should eat. Once you realize the cancer-fighting advantages of a whole foods diet, you may never go back to your old eating habits again. By whole foods, I am referring to such things as: a.. Fresh fruits and vegetables b.. Unrefined grains c.. Nuts d.. Legumes e.. Seeds f.. Small quantities of cold-pressed olive oil g.. Lean, unprocessed, hormone-free meat, fish, and poultry Whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, are filled with essential nutrients, including particular phytochemicals ( " phyto " means plant) and antioxidants that help prevent cancer-nutrients that a diet of junk and refined foods has largely lost in processing. Whole foods also tend to be high in dietary fiber, which sweeps food wastes out of the intestines before they become toxic. They are also low in fat and sugar, which contribute to free-radical production and DNA damage. By comparison, refined foods like white flour and sugar and processed foods like crackers, cookies, and cakes contain virtually no fiber and large quantities of sugar and fat. Additionally, a diet of refined carbohydrates and other types of sugars keep your body's insulin levels chronically high. Chronically high insulin leaves your body unbalanced and much more susceptible to cancer and other degenerative diseases. If possible, when eating your whole foods, make sure that some percentage of the whole foods diet includes eating raw food, since cooking in any form inevitably diminishes the nutritional value. Raw and sprouted foods also contain potent enzymes that assist in digestion and metabolism and support the detoxification pathways of the body. Avoid dairy products as much as you can, with the exception of small quantities of butter, yogurt, and hard cheeses, since cow's milk tends to contain synthetic hormones and antibiotics and can cause allergic reactions in many people. Polyunsaturated oils like safflower and corn oils become rancid easily, which in turn contributes to free-radical damage. Limit your oil consumption if possible to cold-pressed olive oil, which not only resists rancidity but also contains natural antioxidants that boost your cancer defenses. Organic butter is also fine in moderate quantities. The Advantages Of Going Organic (Top) Given the rampant use of pesticides and herbicides by American agribusinesses and the known carcinogenic effects of these residues in foods, you owe it to your health and the health of your family, to pay the extra price for organic produce. Not only are organic fruits and vegetables chemical free, they also taste better (you'll notice the difference) and contain more protein, vitamins, and minerals than their conventional counterparts. Cruciferous Vegetables And Garlic: Cancer Fighters In The Produce Section (Top) In addition to eating an organic whole foods diet, you can also choose certain vegetables for their unique cancer-fighting abilities. Chief cancer-fighting vegetables include the following: a.. Broccoli b.. Bok choy c.. Cauliflower d.. Kale e.. Brussels sprouts f.. Other cabbage family staples g.. Garlic h.. Onions i.. Leeks Research consistently indicates that the regular consumption of cruciferous veggies (so named for the cross shape of their flowers) can significantly reduce your risk of getting cancer. Apparently these tasty mainstays of soups and salads contain a phytochemical that stimulates the production of enzymes in the liver that is crucial to the breakdown of cancer-causing toxins. New studies also indicate that cruciferous vegetables contain a phytochemical that particularly inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells. Even more potent than veggies themselves are broccoli sprouts, which contain 20 to 50 times the cancer-fighting chemicals of mature broccoli. If preventing cancer is high on your list of priorities, then eating a daily serving of cabbage or one of its relatives can be a highly palatable ticket to good health. Speaking of palatable, garlic, the odoriferous herb that's at the heart of much of the world's cuisine. Research indicates that garlic, the darling of tomato sauces and stir-fries, is a potent antioxidant that significantly lowers the risk of contracting certain kinds of cancers (in particular, prostate, breast, and stomach cancers). Populations that eat large quantities of garlic have a significantly lower rate of cancer in general. The anti-cancer qualities of garlic apply to its close cousins onions and leeks as well, but to a lesser degree. Garlic works its magic by helping to control the production of free radicals and by stimulating the body's natural detoxification process. If you prefer to avoid the familiar odor of fresh garlic, you can take supplements containing aged garlic, which is more potent than fresh garlic. The Wonders Of Soy (Top) Did you know that Japanese men are four times less likely to develop detectable prostate cancer than American men? Or that Japanese women are likewise four times less susceptible to breast cancer than American women? One reason may be the soybean, which has long been a part of the Asian diet. It turns out that this readily available natural food, which has the highest quality protein in the plant kingdom, contains powerful phytochemicals known as isoflavones that may help cut cancer risk in a variety of ways: a.. Soy isoflavones seem to help prevent cancers from developing their own blood supply, which keeps small tumors from turning into rampant malignancies b.. These phytonutrients apparently rob cancer cells of their protective chemical shield, making them more vulnerable to the onslaught of the body's immune defenses c.. Isoflavones may inhibit cancer cell growth by deactivating the enzyme that allows them to live forever Most importantly, soy isoflavones are phytoestrogens, which means, they are chemically similar to the hormone estrogen, but far weaker in their hormonal effects. Excessive estrogen in the body can increase the risk not only of breast cancer, but also of uterine, prostate, and colon cancers. High levels of soy isoflavones fill estrogen receptor sites with a weaker form of estrogen, thereby blocking the hormone's carcinogenic effects. Soy comes in a variety of forms. Unfortunately, unfermented soy products are difficult to digest for some people. Many Asians traditionally prefer eating fermented soy, in the forms of miso (a salty soy paste) and tempeh (a textured, fermented soy product). If you eat tofu, try including seaweed (as the Japanese traditionally do) or a little fish or chicken to enhance its digestibility. Green Tea: A Potent Antioxidant (Top) Yet another " health secret " that we have learned from the Japenese is green tea, which has amazing cancer-fighting abilities. This best-selling brew, which happens to be the most popular beverage in Asia (and the most widely consumed drink in the world after water!), contains potent antioxidants called polyphenols that seem to stop cancer dead in its tracks. In one study, for example, Japanese smokers who drank green tea cut their risk of lung cancer by 45 percent-which helps explain why Japanese people have both the highest smoking rates and the lowest lung-cancer rates in the developed world. Laboratory studies indicate that the polyphenols in green tea not only neutralize free radicals and stop tumor growth, but block the formation of toxic compounds in the body that could promote cancer in the first place. In addition, green tea inhibits the growth of viruses and bacteria and, like other antioxidants, protects your heart by lowering cholesterol levels. Besides, with about half the caffeine of coffee and none of its other nerve-rattling side effects, a cup of green tea makes a pleasant natural coffee substitute when you need a midday energy boost. Try adding several cups of green tea to your diet daily-or for more potent antioxidant protection, take the concentrated extract in supplement form. Chlorella, Spirulina, And Kelp: Super Foods From The Water (Top) When the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Mexico 500 years ago, the Aztecs they encountered ate a diet rich in spirulina, a high-protein algae grown on the surface of fresh water lakes. In recent years spirulina and its close cousin chlorella have become popular additions to energy bars and green drinks for their proven ability to boost stamina and vitality. Now recent research indicates that these green " superfoods " have cancer-fighting abilities too. In addition to important vitamins, minerals, natural antioxidants, and essential amino acids, spirulina and chlorella contain extremely high concentrations of chlorophyll, which inhibits cancer growth by protecting cell DNA from free-radical and radiation damage. These nutrient-rich plant foods also boost the immune system and draw possible carcinogenic toxins from the body. In one study, children who were exposed to radiation near Chernobyl showed enhanced immune function and decreased radiation when they were given spirulina for 45 days following the reactor disaster. To get your daily dose of these potent microalgae, take them in supplement form, either alone or as part of a multinutrient formula. Incidentally, fresh water lakes aren't the only source of cancer-fighting superfoods. The ocean also yields a rich bounty in the form of sea vegetables, which are full of essential minerals and trace minerals. Studies in Japan reveal that regular consumption of seaweed reduces the likelihood of contracting certain kinds of cancer. Kelp in particular has been correlated with lower breast cancer rates, and phytonutrients derived from this nutritious sea vegetable seem to protect mucous membranes from cancerous activity. Kelp powder makes a great natural salt substitute that adds seaweed flavor to soups and salads, or you can learn to cook with seaweed as the Japanese do. If the distinctive taste doesn't appeal to you, look for kelp and its cousins in supplement form. Water: Nature's Universal Detoxifier (Top) As you may already know, the human body is two-thirds water. A healthy body is like a clear mountain lake, with fresh streams flowing in and out, bringing essential nutrients and removing toxic wastes. If these streams were to slow to a trickle, however, the lake would become stagnant and cloudy with plant life. Then, if campers dumped trash or sewage into the lake, there would be no fresh water to flush them away, and eventually the lake would get backed up with toxins that could make it uninhabitable for fish and other life forms. When you drink plenty of fresh, pure water, you're constantly flushing toxins, including potential carcinogens, from your system. Since some toxic exposure is unavoidable these days, even if you eat a whole foods diet, you help your body stay healthy and cancer-free when you consume at least eight to ten glasses of clean water each day (in addition to other fluid intake, including beverages and teas). Be sure to drink filtered water; tap water is definitely unsafe, and the quality of bottled water can be inconsistent. Supplement Your Diet With Nutrients That Prevent Cancer Naturally (Top) Vitamin C | Vitamin E | Beta-Carotene | Omega-3 | Coenzyme Q10 | Alpha-Lipoic Acid | Grape Seed Extract | Selenium Cancer is known as " the disease of our time " precisely because we're bombarded as never before by toxic, potentially carcinogenic substances that the body must neutralize or counteract to remain cancer-free. This increased toxic load challenges our immune defenses and taxes our natural reserves of essential nutrients and antioxidants. Even an organic, whole foods diet doesn't provide enough nutrition these days to restore the body's depleted supply. To help prevent cancer, we need to supplement our diet with particular nutrients that support immune function, neutralize free radicals, and enhance the natural process of detoxification. As I mentioned earlier, antioxidants are an especially potent weapon against cancer because they counteract the formation of free radicals, the unstable molecules that get cancer started in the first place. Among the most effective antioxidants are: a.. Vitamins C and E b.. Beta-carotene c.. Omega-3 fatty acids d.. Coenzyme Q10 e.. Alpha-Lipoic acid f.. Grape seed extract In addition, supplements containing the trace mineral selenium give an extra boost to your overworked immune system, and the antioxidant glutathione, or its precursor N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), ensures that your liver can fulfill its crucial role of removing toxic substances from your body. Vitamin C Since the ground-breaking research of my good friend, physicist Dr. Linus ing, in the 1960s and 70s, the immune-boosting powers of vitamin C have been widely acknowledged. But you may not realize that this essential vitamin is also one of the body's primary antioxidants, with the power to block the formation of certain carcinogens and to keep free radicals from inflicting cancer-causing damage on your cells. Vitamin C works best in conjunction with its cohorts vitamin E, beta carotene, and selenium-in fact, one of its main functions is to restore vitamin E's potency when the fat-soluble antioxidant is depleted by free-radical activity. Research indicates that vitamin C is especially effective in preventing cancers of the intestinal tract (mouth, esophagus, stomach, and colon), and there is convincing evidence that it also helps stop breast and uterine cancers before they start. Perhaps even more important, studies reveal that people who take vitamin C supplements live longer than those who don't! Though it's abundantly available in many fruits and vegetables, this water-soluble vitamin is easily depleted. To make the most effective use of its cancer-fighting potential, take a supplement containing 500 to 3,000 mg daily, preferably in combination with vitamin E, selenium, and bioflavonoids. Vitamin E A fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that does its important cancer-prevention work in parts of the body that other vitamins and antioxidants can't reach-for example, the fatty portion of cell membranes and the fat molecules that circulate in the bloodstream. Because heavy metals and other toxins tend to accumulate in fatty tissue, vitamin E plays a particularly important role. This essential nutrient is also a powerful immune booster, and numerous studies agree that people with high vitamin E levels are far less likely to contract cancer than those whose levels are low. Unfortunately, of all the major vitamins, E is the hardest to obtain from purely dietary sources. To make sure you get an adequate supply, take a supplement offering at least 500 IU of natural vitamin E daily. Beta-Carotene Often called provitamin A because it readily converts to this nutrient in the liver, beta-carotene also has some extraordinary cancer-fighting properties of its own. In addition to providing the well known immune-stimulating, infection-fighting power of vitamin A, beta carotene is a potent antioxidant that diminishes the likelihood of several cancers-particularly lung, stomach, and breast cancer. Along with its close cousins, the other carotenoids, including lycopene and lutein, help to keep cells functioning the way they were meant to function (rather than becoming cancerous) and also promotes the healthy detoxification that occurs in the liver. Fortunately, beta-carotene and the other carotenoids occur in abundance in yellow, orange, red, and dark green fruits and veggies-everything from watermelon and tomatoes to spinach, kale, and of course the vegetable for which these nutrients are named, carrots. Fresh juices are a great way to get your quota of carotenoids. To boost your intake, you can also take a daily multinutrient supplement containing up to 20,000 IU of mixed carotenoids. Omega-3 Fatty Acids The omega-3 oils contribute to cancer prevention by stimulating your liver to eliminate toxins and by inhibiting inflammation, which tends to increase the production of cancer-causing free radicals. The omega-3 oils are found in abundance in: a.. Deep- and cold-water fish (such as salmon, cod, tuna, halibut, mackerel, and sardines) b.. Certain nuts and seeds (such as flax and hemp) Studies demonstrate that people who eat large quantities of ocean-going fish have lower cancer rates than those who don't, and researchers have correlated this statistic with the consumption of omega-3 oils. These potent cancer-fighters have other benefits as well: a.. Reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis, colitis, allergies, and asthma b.. Lower blood pressure c.. Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease The best way to get your daily dose of omega-3 is to eat plenty of saltwater fish. Flaxseed oil is also a popular source, but beware-this volatile oil turns rancid easily and must be refrigerated. A more reliable alternative is to take flaxseed or fish oil capsules with food-1,000 mg three times daily. Choose a reliable brand, and make sure the fish oil has not been processed with the toxic chemical methanol and is well preserved with an antioxidant such as vitamin E. CoQ10, Lipoic Acid, and Grape Seed Extract As I mentioned earlier, the best way to guard against cancer is to take plenty of antioxidants. Three of the most powerful antioxidant supplements on the market today are coenzyme-Q10 (CoQ10), alpha-Lipoic acid, and grape seed extract. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) Essential for energy production in every cell of the body, coenzyme Q10 is especially concentrated in the heart, where it's required to keep this tireless organ healthy and strong. Studies also reveal that low CoQ10 levels have lead to increased cancer risk, and that the supplement can actually shrink breast cancer tumors. To reap its many benefits, take 60 to120 mg daily. Alpha-Lipoic Acid Produced naturally by the body, alpha-Lipoic acid enhances the potency and prevents the depletion of other essential antioxidants like vitamins C and E. Unique among antioxidants in being both fat and water soluble (and therefore reaching all parts of the body), this vitamin-like compound supports the liver in eliminating toxic chemicals, especially heavy metals, and may even block the activation of cancer-causing DNA! Like CoQ10, alpha-Lipoic acid may become deficient with age, so be sure to take it in supplement form-at least 50 mg daily. Grape Seed Extract For extra antioxidant protection, you may want to add grape seed extract, which contains some of the most potent free-radical fighters known-as much as 20 times more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times more powerful than vitamin E. For best results, take 30-100 mg of a high-potency extract daily. Selenium Although it's merely a trace mineral (meaning that it's required by the body in very small doses), selenium is actually one of the most potent cancer-preventing nutrients known. It's an essential component of the body's primary antioxidant, known as glutathione peroxidase, which helps the liver eliminate toxins from the body and protects your heart, blood vessels, and other vital organs and tissues from the ravages of aging and disease, particularly cancer. In one study, people who took selenium supplements were half as likely to die of cancer as those who didn't. Other studies indicate that people who live in areas with selenium-poor soil are far more likely to contract cancer than those who live in selenium-rich regions. Though this crucial mineral is generally found in a number of foods, you can never be sure about the quality of the soil in which these foods were grown. You can give yourself added insurance against cancer by taking 100-200 mcg of selenium daily, preferably in combination with zinc and calcium, which have immune-boosting properties. Glutathione No discussion of cancer-fighting nutrients would be complete without mentioning glutathione, the most abundant antioxidant in the body. Manufactured naturally from protein, glutathione has a number of essential functions that help keep your body cancer-free: a.. Needed in the liver to completely eliminate toxins and to neutralize the free radicals that are generated as a by-product of detoxification b.. Enhances immune function and is found in abundance in white blood cells c.. Has a unique ability to bind and remove toxic heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, and mercury d.. Helps in the production, defense, and repair of DNA e.. Chemically stable; retains its free-radical-fighting properties longer than most other antioxidants, and has the ability to restore vitamins C and E and other antioxidants once they've become oxidized themselves As a supplement, glutathione itself is difficult to absorb but you can take NAC, a major precursor of glutathione, to make sure your body has an ample supply. I recommend at least 50 mg of NAC daily, but you can take up to 600 mg if you choose.
