Overdenture and overlay denture

Hi AllYesterday at work I saw the case when Pt came with acrylic partial denture on his front teeth,when I did the charting all 4 front teeth root stamps were present they were pretty much decayed as well,and the denture overlayed them.Is it overaly denture?What is it?I ve never seen it before....I thought that if it is overdenture teeth need to be RCT...or if it is partial denture or full root stamps need to be removed.Maybe in DTP we can consider the overlay denture as well esp when Pt is short of time..?What do you think guys?
