Not to worry, Kim. Normal on ALT here is 40 to 120. My last one was 139 that's down from 230 in March & the lowest it's been since 09/01/04. If I were you I wouldn't worry too much right now. Wait for the ultrasound results - that will tell you more than blood tests. Hi Ellie,

Welcome to the group. Glad you joined us! The carb thing is pretty

individual. Some people have to adjust it up if they're very active or

doing a lot of distance cardio. Some people who are very

carb-sensitive have to adjust it down a little. There's a lot of

flexibility depending on the carb choices you make. You can have lots

of bread, pasta, rice, and potato carb portions if you need extra

calories and carbs, or lots of berries, beans, and squash if you need

to keep things lower and more controlled.

People who are trying to gain weight/muscle are told to eat double

carb portions at the first three meals. That would probably also be a

good move for endurance athletes who are putting in lots of miles. It

really depends on your goals, activity level, and carb sensitivity.

With some minor adjustments, BFL nutrition can work for just about

anybody.

You might enjoy Berg's blog if you're not familiar with it.

She's an ultrarunner doing 100+ mile races. She keeps her carbs

surprisingly low most of the time, doing kind of a paleo for athletes

plan. http://julieberg.blogspot.com/

I'll probably jump in and start " talking... " it's hard for me not to when I'm

interested in something.

owner really believes in and recommends BFL. I've been marginally familiar with

it, to the extent of knowing it recommends 6 protein/carb meals a day along with

weight training. I just learned on the website (www.bodyforlife.com) that

cardio is also included in the program.

lbs.) I get to use the gym as part of my employment, how cool is that?

described on the website. As a matter of fact, I do endurance sports --

marathon-running and triathlons. I have a coach who designs my workouts (5 days

a week, swim/bike/run, usually only one a day, although occasionally I'll swim

and run the same day.) I will need to ask her about including strength-training.

I know she will be in favor of it but it will have to be worked in with my other

training without " overtraining, " especially since I am not used to it.

Hey, ! Thank you! I just went to 's blog and found we're practically

kindred spirits... same sign even, and we both run with a dog. I'll be

interested to see how she does her extreme endurance sports with a modest-carb

intake. Since she's doing a 24-hour race this weekend, she hasn't logged her

food (she has a link in her sidebar to her food log.)

Thanks also for the input on carbs/BFL for endurance athletes. I just bought the

book on eBay ($8.75 including shipping!!) and I'm interested in adding the

program to my current training. I need a diet boost. This may be it.

Everyone else.... I'm enjoying reading your posts, learning as I go along. Y'all

are downright friendly -- fun to read and I'll probably post more as I get to

know you.

Thanks for reading!

Dawnn -- I'm in Garrett County. For the summer, anyway. We lived here 30 years

and then my husband retired 2 years ago; we've been living and traveling in our

RV (sold our house to our son) and staying at Deep Creek Lake State Park in the

summer. He had been a forest/park ranger. I was a nurse.

I love the part-time gym job. Maybe too early to say, since I just finished my

first day yesterday, but... if I can say after my first day, " I Love This Job, "

then I probably love this job. Ordinarily it takes me a year to get used to a

new job and stop feeling stupid. At the gym yesterday I didn't feel stupid once.

Didn't know for sure what to do once or twice, but I didn't feel stupid. One

young guy was talking about joining the Navy and getting into condition for the

physical requirements. He's having trouble running 1.5 miles in 12 minutes. I

was able to talk to him about how to train to run a certain pace for a certain

distance. I actually felt knowledgeable my first day on a job!!! Another guy

just got to talking and we worked out side by side on different machines while

we shot the bull together. When he changed machines, I changed machines. It was

really cool. Small gym... we're encouraged to mingle with the clients, talk,

work out together, etc. I love it.

I'm interested to hear that you do the program with just regular food. All those

supplements and meal replacements are expensive. I don't even like the taste of

most of them, although my Wal-Mart soy-protein powder is OK :-) You log on

FitDay? I do, too, off and on. I also log my nutrition some on

TrainingPeaks.com, where my coach posts my training schedule. I get bogged down

trying to log there for my coach, plus on FitDay for my friends, plus logging my

workouts on two different sites b/c one is my coach's site and the other keeps

the totals in a way I like better, plus I keep my blog, and read other blogs,

and have half-a-dozen email lists....

How do other people do it all?

Maybe like Nike... Just Do It.

Hope you do the gym job. You'll like it. I promise.

I feel like a newbie, although I've been here lurking for a while. I

find it helpful to read stuff here because it gets me to get back on

track and realize, why not, I should do this.

I can relate now to the 20 min high intensity interval training, kind

of now. I was up to 60 min of aerobics or more, but at maybe a low

intensity (jogging). Well, this week I did some heavy abdominal stuff

and the next day it was all I could do to just drag my feet for 20

minutes out in the hot sun. I had no energy! It must have been

because of my diet, too. I know I have a ways to go in that

department. I'm thinking those myoplex drinks aren't all bad. The

lite ones were really pretty good. My husband let me drink his, so

I've had two. They're a little pricey, but they were good.

Sounds like fun at the gym. I am taking classes at AACC to be certified in

nutrition. Then

in a few months I will start preparing for ACE to be a certified trainer. I have

to look the

part though. We have overweight people at my gym as trainers. That makes NO

sense to

me. Being overweight myself by 50 pounds I wouldn't want me training me. Or

giving me

I have a bunch of breakfast ideas on my What I Eat page:

http://www.skwigg.com/id3.html

If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend the blueberry pancake

(about halfway down the page).

If you eat eggs, toast, and half an apple for breakfast, technically

that would be a double carb portion. Although, it depends on what kind

of bread you use and how big the apple is. Why not have a full fruit

portion to satisfy the sweet tooth? You could probably have a half

pint of fresh berries, half a cantaloupe, or 3 peaches for the same

calories/carbs as the partial apple and toast.

Do whatever is going to work best for you. You want it to become a

habit, something you look forward to in the morning.

> Hi

> I am new at BFL as this is my first week on it. Am doing good but the only

problem is that I usually eat something sweet for breakfast like a piece of

fruit. Am wondering if I can have the eggs with one slice of toast and half an

apple to take care of my sweet tooth? What are some other ideas for breakfast

that you use? And my favorite treat is coconut creme pie ice cream from Cold

Stone Creamery. Am looking forward to it this Sunday.

This reminds me of a really good book that opened my eyes to better

food choices .. its by Dr Shapiro and its called 'The Picture

Perfect Diet'. Not really a 'diet' book, it shows you in picture

form from page to page what your choice is and what it could be in

the same amount of calories. For example an 1/8 of a bagel on one

page or on the other page a whole page of food to eat INSTEAD of

that measly bagle bite. Same calories - your choice. Here is a link

to it on Amazon.com and click on the 'back cover' link on the left

to see what I mean. http://tinyurl.com/lynwo

As a reference book this is a keeper! Also his recipe book is a good

one too - I have both and often refer to them (each time an eye

opener as I forget the possible better choices that I could be

making! its like an alzheimers foodchoice moment!) Also I found that

to extend BFL from a 'diet' to a lifestyle change (that nutritional

learning curve thing we go thru) its a great book to add to your

collection :-)

Don't worry , you did the right thing... I still cry over decisions too always wondering did we do the right thing... My FIL was relieved when she was able to answer for herself... Its still sad but she has been ill for such a long time and has so many different ailments to deal with... Her birthday is next week she will be 76... Over the last few years we have been called to the hospital being told it would be anytime and she always pulled through, she's been a fighter, but now its time to go she said, so no more...

Dear Helen

When my husband was dieing of malignant brain cancer I had to make the choice of not using life support to this day which is 9 years later I cry about it was it the right choice or not. I know you don't wish to hear this but in a way I wish he had made the choice. I cry did I do the right thing did I bring him to the right hospital and what about the life support. I was hospice to my husband who had a glioblastoma multiforme. I learned the cadd pump for this and we dragged him around a 6'5" man in a wheelchair. I hate the idea that he ever had to have brain cancer but I am thankful as well because my operations would have made it impossible for him to be with me now. They damaged my arms hands and legs I look like I have had a neurological stroke on the left hand side. There would have been no way I could have had the time he needed and wanted with us

((((((Helen))))) sometimes there are just no words ~ I'm so sorry that you and your family are going through this. I can't imagine how difficult it must be but I'm sure you can take some comfort knowing that she made the choice and the family isn't left to wonder what to do. I'm sure that will bring some peace to the family. Please know that my thoughts are with you. Hugs, Judy

We've been hectic around here... My MIL came out of her coma and told the doctors "enough She's ready to go see Jesus..." The family was called in again today... The girls finally got to see her, they took her out of ICU and put her in a room where we can come and go as we please plus the younger ones can see her now also... She has many, many issue's so the doc said it won't be long, 3 days to a week... She has stopped all medications except for pain meds and has stopped dialysis also... Hubby is doing alright at times, my FIL is ok, but he is so sad... They would be celebrating their 59th anniversary next month...

I will try and catch up tonight, but no promises... Hope all are doing as well as can be... I may not be on too often in the following days to come, will do my best...

((( Hugs )))

you shouldn't worry about catching up. you should just be with your family. my grand father died a few years ago on christmas eve. it was really hard on the whole family. we knew it was coming and i think it made it a little easier to deal with. i am sorry you are going through this. take your time in posting, we will all be here. evelyn We've been hectic around here... Dear Helen,

I am very sorry to hear about your MIL. I will be praying for your family, especially your hubby and FIL. It's hard losing someone at any age even when they are ready.

God bless you all. My in-laws are 81 and 79 and not in the best of health. I know they won't be around forever but can't imagine the world without them, they are more like parents to me than my own. My dad died 22 yrs ago, so my FIL is the only dad I have left and my mom is seriously insane. I am not kidding. My MIL says I am her daughter. I love them so much and they are Christians, my mom is an atheist. I really don't get her. She left me and my dad when I was 13, attempted suicide 3 times I know of, and was in and out of mental hospitals. Whenever I see her now she says I am fat (thanks for the info!) and she doesn't get the fibro and why am I on so many meds? I have sent her websites etc but I don't know if she reads them.

Sorry for the vent. I will keep you and your hubby's family in prayer.

much love,
