Guest guest
Well you are telling my story. I have been on hydrocortone (another brand name for Cortef) since 1998. It took a little while to find the right dose but at the beginning I was on 25 mg/day and now I am on 20 mg per day. I wish I could say I have been able to get off it but I haven't. However before I started it nothing was working for me and I was nearly non functional. Once I started taking it, it was nothing short of a miracle. I had been sick a long time and was just not getting better. I tried boosting my adrenals with diet and supplements but nothing made much difference. I think I know why you r doctor doesn't like MckJefferies work. There was a study published in Octl 1998 in JAMA where they tested the low dose cortisone theory and their conclusion was that it helped some people but overall it was too dangerous because it caused adrenal suppression. Well the problem with that study was that they really skrewed it up. What they did was take a bunch of CFS patients and give them either 25 mg or 30mg of cortisone according to their body surface area. Why they did that who knows but that is certainly not how you dose cortisone according to MckJefferies. It is like if you decided to give a hypothyroid patient 2 or 3 grains of thyroid according to their body surface area. You might help some people that need that much but you would be having thyroid storm going on everywhere. I too have had some doctors telling me that 25 mg is too much and too dangerous but no one can tell me why. It just is. I suspect it is that study but as far as I know no one has challanged it. It is maddening to me because if it really is a problem I would like to know. But that study is really bogus. Having said all that, I have not been able to get off the cortisone but I ahven't been able to get off my thyroid meds either. I don't think it is harming me but who knows. I got pregnant while on it. The pregnancy went fine. The delivery was a killer in part because no one knew how much cortisone I would need. But my son 15 months old and is quite fine. You might want to read Mck Jefferies book. It is a lot to slog through though. And also From Fatigued to Fantastic, by Teilelbaum. Also my DX works with people by phone so if you want her info email me privately. Good luck, Irene At 08:26 AM 7/19/03, you wrote: >I'm very interested in anyone's experience taking cortef -- dosage, >how long you've taken, if you've been able to get off. Guest guest
Oh yes and my doctor has ahd people get off the cortisone. I think Mck Jeffries has as well but I am not sure of that one. I did try to get a hold of him once without luck. I found an email address but got no response. He about 95 years old now if he is still alive. Irene >Well you are telling my story. Guest guest
I used it for about a year. It really didn't help. It isn't really a natural version of cortef. It is some sort of dessicated adrenal but there is no hormone in it. My doctors says that it helps some people though. Guest guest
Actually they do, at least they did for me. I was on thyroid 4 years before starting cortisone and I definitely improved with the thyroid meds. But there is synergism between cortisol and thyroid hormone. Thyronin for sure.
