Well, I went to the doctor yesterday because I got poison ivy again and

I'm dangerously allergic (got hives last time). I'm fine, btw. =) While

there I was asked to sign a document stating I read and understand the

new HIPAA requirements. Of course I don't sign anything I haven't read

so I start reading through their document which outlines the changes to

HIPAA and I am flabbergasted!!! If I can get my scanner to work I will

send you all a copy.

Basically according to the new HIPAA regulations, and I had no idea such

a thing as HIPAA even existed before yesterday, they can provide...

without your consent or knowledge at the time... your medical information

to third parties INCLUDING law enforcement (though they at least must

have a warrant now, once upon a time even with a warrant they couldn't

get your medical info), insurance companies (great! Now they will know

who to insure and who not to based on medical records), other doctors,

pharmacies (all they need is my prescription!), researchers, and

companies (drug companies can use this for marketing, I wonder if this

means we'll be getting drug advertisements in the mail when they look at

our records and see that we suffer from heartburn).

Anyhow, I'm so weary... but alternating between spitting mad too. Since

the Patriot Act it has been a domino affect as one right topples down after

another. =( In light of the gene screening of infants in the UK I thought

this would be of interest to you all.

Thankfully, someone is fighting for our rights and I feel that it is crucial

that we all stand behind them and support them any way we can.

Here's a website with info on the changes to HIPAA and a petition to sign:
