Most people take 5 weeks off in the summer here in Sweden and that hasn't hurt our economy at all. There are always young people who need the extra cash who are willing to work when everyone else is on leave, and for irreplacable positions they just plan it so that one person or group take their vacation at the beginning of the summer and the next person or group at the end of the summer. Works just fine by voluntary negotiation between individuals, no need for anyone to pull rank to have priority.

I wish we had vacations like Europeans. 4-6 weeks off a year and holidays. I tried to order licorice from Holland last year and they were off for two weeks. Retailers in US don't take that much time off at a time.

They don't because they usually have enough employees that they can give them vacations in shifts. The European model does have its flaws though because the vacations are somewhat damaging to the economy if everyone is off at the same time. What would work is if companies had 3 to 4 weeks of vacation time, not including Holidays, but the workers would have to schedule when they took those vacations such that enough staff was always on hand, barring illness and things. Scheduling would be done by seniority: long time employees would get first choice and newest hires the last. The people could divided up their vacation time however they wanted, as long as staffing demands were met.

I'll bet you could easily get a ticket now. You should check it out.

It was a small auditorium filled with older fans, which is what I

love about the great old groups--none of the endless teeny bopper

fans (I saw Jethro Tull in October--same nice crowd, seat up front.)

I was close enough to Ian that he looked at me and smiled (or at the

very least I imagined he did, which was good enough! ;) ) All the

originals were there except the guitar player but it's Steve Morse

who's a great guitarist so he only added to the music! Their new

album comes out in October.

Ooooh Jethro Tull too! :-o Would LOVE to see them!

Even if they came to Sweden, I don't know if I would be able to stand a rock

concert with my current level of sensitivity though. I can't stand loud

sound or crowds. :-(

Did Deep Purple have Ian Gillan?

We saw Ian , on his rubbing elbows tour, what a great show that was, it was in a small church auditorium and he took questions from the audience. Still have a kazoo from that night we got to play along on loccamotive breath. Apparently he is a neighbor and lives in Yardly which is not to far from where we are. You're a Tull fan? Great! They're one of my all time favs. They were

great in concert--no different than when they were young except that

they weren't as loud and crazy, which is good especially if you don't

like loud noise. I can take loud music but not for too long and not

crazy loud. I was tired afterwards though. Also, he was touring with

an up and coming violinist and she played some with them and some by

herself. I wanted all Tull but she was good and it was easy on the

ears. The crowd was older people and docile!

If Deep Purple didn't have Ian Gillan, would it still be Deep Purple?

The Voice. He was as good as ever.

I can't speak for you but maybe seeing the legends come out on stage

would banish all your fears and discomforts! They have such presence

as well as talent--especially the guys in Deep Purple.

Oh, dear, I really sound like an idol-worshipping rock maniac!

How fun! He has a great personality, doesn't he? Is Yardly in the

country? I loved his Heavy Horses and Songs From The Wood that he

wrote when he lived on a farm. Neighbor, huh? If you see him, tell

him I said hi.

Everett,

If you haven’t had many sick days w/

an EF of 18%-why would they be upset after 7 years employment for something

that would make you better & maybe more productive. Having an ICD is not

incompatible w/ continuing to work. Yes some people have more limits than

others but that is due to the heart failure itself—not always the ICD.

The ICD corrects arrhythmias, the medication & life style changes improve

the function of the heart

If your job has been trying to get rid of

you-ICD or not—they likely will find a way.

Good luck & god bless

Janet

Hi everyone, Happy New Year, We started the new year out right, went into the ER Sunday from church with chest pain, nito didn't help so off we went. We know all of the hospital staff by first name by now. Anyway Tuesday we got our 18th stent, and our EF is up to 40%. After 1 heart attack and a 6 graph bypass and the 18 stents and 1 ICD I can tell you something about time off work. I worked at a job that was very physical (in the plastics industry) and could not return to work for 3 weeks after each stent and 8 weeks after the bypass. After the ICD they would not let me return to work at all( they are worried that if it goes off I could fall into a piece of equipment). Each time I would be off work I applied for FML (Family Medical Leave) and they gave it to me, because it is the law (the drs were more then happy to fill out the forms which I got from my emplyoer). The law states

that you can take off up to 3 months time (unpaid) and still not lose any benifits. i had to take off much longer then that but the company put me on extended medical leave after the 3 months (they didn't let me keep my old job after the 3 months but I still kept my hourly rate etc). Anyway ask the HR department for the forms (FLM) before you go in for the ICD. Let me know what happens and good luck. Hi Everett;

Well now that you mention you are a truck driver, I would worry too. However it depends on what state you are live in... I am in California and I am not a professional driver, but I can tell you I have answered DMV's questions. Do you have health limitations, any medical condition which prevents you from driving etc... I answer NO to all of them because I feel I can. I am a safer driver with my ICD in place than I was driving around without my ICD. Also about car insurance - my insurance has not asked me any medical questions and I do not tell them anything. I have had an ICD for almost 6 years and I feel I am in much better shape now than when I didn't have one. Also with the DMV thing - I fill out the donor card and on the back it asks if I have a pace maker... I fill in ICD. However that just stays in my wallet and no one else has that info.

So in short I think I would go in for my procedure and come back in week ready for work. I think you will feel much better with the ICD and perhaps they can medicate you better to help bring up your EF. I have cardiomyopathy and I could not be medicated until after the ICD was put in place to help stabilize my heart so that I could be medicated. After 18 most of Coreg my EF was brought up to normal - 65, from 43.

Good luck to you. I hope this helps. Please try not to worry, as it will only hurt your heart. Someone else pointed out about disability. You might look into that and start the paper work while you are now still able to work...

Please keep us posted, and welcome to your new family.

P.S. Everett; You may also inquire about a "desk" job inside the company... At least inquire and see how it goes - you might say something like, if the time should come that I can no longer drive. Or just simply you are looking at alternatives...

Good luck and do keep us posted.

Not only does the process take a long time, if you're approved, you

still have to wait a year for eligibility before receiving SS

disability payments. This is very problematic if you're the sole

breadwinner. We lived on credit cards and loans once short term

disability ran out and I was able to get an early retirement at the

same time the SSI disability payments began. Still, finances continue

to be a problem. We do the best we can.

Regarding the post on not reporting the ICD, I am concerned that

professional truck drivers have a greater responsibility and not

reporting it may jeopardize the driver and the public. What if you're

tooling down the highway and suddenly get zapped? What if you lose

consciousness? What happens to the vehicle?

These are sensitive issues with no simple answers, I'm afraid.

On the other hand, after implanting the ICD, there will be a period of

recovery where you're not at work so the EP can see what the ICD is

doing and whether or not you're getting zapped. Getting zapped

definitely disqualifies you for driving.

Good luck, everttnevarez. We are pulling for you.

more. Even medic only jobs pay more than this.

Lou, I think your client needs to update his pay scales from 10 years ago.
