Working in conflict zones

Ladies and Gents,

I want to put my views across about some of the companies hiring

medics/CP personnel in post conflict zones.

During my time in Iraq working as a CP/medic operator a few years ago,

it became apparent that some of our colleagues working for other

employers had no life insurance, no medical backup or repatriation plan

whatsoever.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but if any of the keener,

greener members on the list do decide to take up such posts make sure

your covered! I was told that a lot of companies were 'winging it' and

needed to be 'reeled in' by a US military officer in Baghdad. Also look

at weapons and vehicles being used to work with. Driving around in a

locally rented non armoured 4x4's (standing out like a sore thumb) with

AK's and low grade ammo is putting yourself at considerable risk for the

money some of these outfits are paying. They will boast tax free

(especially for UK residents), which is correct if you are prepared to

spend 9 months out of the UK (expat status) and loose your national

insurance benefits and credit rating.

There are many legal cases going through in the states against such

companies by family members who have received nothing following the

deaths of their family members working for such outfits.

Just one for your consideration.

Ian.
