Hi All,

Hoping the group can help with some advise on the UK tax system. I currently

work on vessels in the North Sea usually on the UK Continental self, but I

always manage to get a foreign port in somewhere along the lines and do at least

180 days offshore. Well at the moment I have got two choices as I understand it,

that's stay PAYE and claim back the tax at the end of the year. Or go self

employed but I have had some confusing advice saying that I could be liable for

all my tax. But I do have a final option I spend most of my time in Thailand now

and have a apartment in Bangkok combined with 180days and the time I spend in

Thailand I do quailfy as a non UK resident. Now if I declare myself as a non-UK

resident would I still be liable for tax if I work on the UK Contiental self.

Or if no one knows the answer can they give me a name and number of a bloody

good accountant who doesn't charge a fortune.

Best Regards to the group

But if you live in North Cyprus where I hear land and property is cheaper then

you have to employ Mrs Cherie Blair (nee Boothe) to defend your property rights

from those Greek people in the south...at least I understand that in the North

the Turks have got a fresh water pipeline from the mainland...but how are you

and the family enjoying your life there Ian ?

I have spoken to a French chap we have on board and the figures are correct

except for foreigners who simply get onto the tax free bit by putting everything

in the wife's name, who is a non tax paying resident, and then coming home on

R & R to be with her...!

Of course you are now obliged to remember birthdays, anniversaries and

International Women's Day...but you get to eat great food and drink lovely local

wines and not pay tax to Mrs Blair's bloody husband.

Hi ,

Please keep me informed of what you find out as I quite fancy the idea

of living somewhere in Europe.

Anyone know the Slovenian tax code?

Chas,

I presume you work for an agency, if you work for more than

one, you need a foreign port for each one. Another option is

to work for your own company, just the one port as for self

employed. You can pay your self the minimum wage and also in

shares you can also do a lot more things, . If it is a

Foreign company you don't have to pay NI.

Best Rgds,

Hi ,

So if I set mnyself up as an aussie company and worked here I would not pay tax?

interesting.

Then again, the Australian Government will find a way to tax me.

Mick,

You would pay tax, but if you paid yourself a small amount

of money, £5K pa you would not then. and take the rest as

company dividends. You could have perks like a company car

ect, but you would have to look into that.

Note: if you form a limited company in order to 'pay' yourself by

dividends, you do pay tax on the company 'profit' but at a lower rate.

Make sure if you go this route you do not fall foul of IR35

legislation which is aimed at contractors.
