I really, really hate to admit this here, but since I started NT, I gained 15

lbs. Coincidentally, I started at about the same time doing daily

neurodevelopmental therapy with my 9 yos. It fell entirely on my shoulders, and

takes hours every day. We also homeschool (I have a 16 yod, and 5 yos - my

preemie). A good friend of mine who is also doing the therapy with her 2 yos

said our lives are like Groundhog Day - - the same every single day. Very

true. Also during this time, I found out my aunt is dying of cancer (they're

about to call in hospice), and another aunt and uncle were in a very major car

accident and are recovering slowly after spending a long time in ICU. All that

to say, I've been very stressed, and I'm not sure what to attribute to my NT

eating, and what to attribute to stress.

I'm being very transparent here. It's not easy, but I hope it helps someone

else, I really do.

Guess I've been sort of in a funk all day -- after reading Jenni's note, my

efforts at losing weight seem really very, very unimportant. Wish there was

something that I could do for her, some way that I could help her -- she seems

such a sweet, nice sort of person....

However, not focusing on my weight issue isn't going to help, so ...

I've been " doing " NT -- basically low-carb (with some extra good carbs, such

as apples, whole-wheat bread added) for about a week now -- and I've gained 4

pounds. I doubt that I can actually gain that much that fast, so I think that

it's the carbs holding water -- I sincerely hope this is as far as the weight

gain goes! I am eating whenever I think about food -- but it seems that eating

more throughout the day simply reduces my appetite in the evening. So I'm not

sure if there is much of a caloric increase, just the extra carbs.... I would

like to permanently add back some of the good carbs -- I LIKE EATING THEM!

My husband is out of town this week -- that will make it easier for me to only

eat what I want in the evening -- he is ALWAYS hungry, and he likes a good

supper. (hmmm, maybe he's always been an NT follower -- he is very slender and

has never cut back on food -- just the empty carbs). I frequently have to force

myself to eat a respectable serving of the meat in the evening, and will leave

the supper table feeling overfull.... Maybe I just need a light salad at that

time????

So how are the rest of you eating? What is a typical day's food intake?

Hi Bonnie, Yesterday I was not very good!!

breakfast: apple and peanut butter

lunch: pumpkin pie cappuccino---mmmmmgood

supper: arby's fresh deli sandwich--roasted ham and swiss cheese +

curly fries (medium) and cheese + chocolate milk

snack: cake and ice-cream

about 1970 calories---NOW to actually lose weight I should not eat more

than 1200 ---

when I went to the nutritionist my DR sent me to for my cholesterol she

said it doesn't matter what " diet you use " it is simply a matter of less

calories than you burn or if you want to maintain the same amount of

calories and activities. She said ALL diets are just what is easy for

you to achieve that formula. I was NEVER good at math! LOL! Hugs~

I really don't buy into the theory that weight is 100% dependent on caloric

intake. If that were so, then people like my husband (who eats a LOT of food,

yet maintains a very trim 142# at 5'6 " , with only moderate exercise) would be

heavier, and those who consistently ate less would be light -- doesn't seem to

work that way. The chemistry of the body has got to be very complex, and so much

of what we eat is affected by various chemical reactions. A calorie is simply

the amount of energy produced by burning a certain amount of food -- and the ash

that's left is the carb count (I think this is what the basic definition is). By

that reasoning, 100 calories of white refined sugar would have the same impact

on body weight as 100 calories of pure protein -- yet the protein goes into

building/repairing muscle, etc., and the sugar finds its way into our fat cells

(particularly my belly!).

Then again, maybe I'm just too lazy to calculate my daily caloric intake....

I very much think that the type of diet you choose is important -- I think that

the healthier we eat, the healthier our bodies will be. Can you just imagine the

extreme of a person maintaining a tight 1200 calories/day with only foods like

doughnuts, full-sugared cokes, potato chips, etc., etc.?

I think the biggest (individual) issue we have is determining just what we think

is a healthy way of eating -- for me, it's meant eliminating refined sugars and

flours, no white rice or regular pasta or white potatoes -- others go the route

of reducing fats -- some tend to vegetables only. I think determining our eating

pattern is individual, and I don't think that science has fully analyzed just

what's " best " for us -- and perhaps each of us has somewhat different

requirements. I know that my husband is very happy with a huge steak, and could

cheerfully eat one several times a week -- whereas I get very tired, very

quickly, of slabs of meat.... I sort of " force " the salads and vegetables onto

Harry but I enjoy them (much more than the meat!).

Hi Bonnie, I totally 100% agree about eating foods that are good for

you, I just have a problem doing it! :-) I don't really like fruits

veggies and DEFINITELY not meat ( except Ham and bacon). I do like

cheese. My husband is 5'8 " and is about 150#'s and LOVES good food and

eats 3 times what I do (and that is no exaggeration) but he works at a

factory everyday and I sit on my fannie at a computer, I always figured

those 2 things were the difference!. When I was Human Resource Manager

at K-Mart I walked all over the store several times a day and ate the

same way I do now--maybe even a little more--and never had to worry

about my weight--so for me it is not moving enough:-) Hugs Connie

Hello Sweet Melinda,

You are so special. I can't tell you how touched I was when I read your last

line. Here you are going through all of this and you are still reaching out

hoping to help someone else through your sharing.

I have always believed that when you are hurting the best way to heal yourself

is to reach out to try to help heal someone else. You live in the spirit of that

every day. For that I know you will always be blessed.

Hi Connie,

My husband sits at a computer all day, just like I do -- we both go for lunch

hour walks, then walk a couple miles in the evening with our dogs -- and we take

long (about 5 miles) hikes on the weekends. Our biking, golfing, roller blading

is always done together... However, I add my LL exercises each morning, about 40

minutes -- so far, Harry's commitment to them is " I really ought to start doing

them with you.... " .

We are both very much type A personalities, seldom sit down at home -- only

" difference " is I'm female and have had 6 babies (I really think that makes a

difference with weight control) and Harry has a male metabolism. However, like

your husband, mine easily trebles my eating!

But still, he does eat a LOT and he eats OFTEN. I pack him a bag of nuts (about

4 ounces almonds and 2 ounces of cashews) for snacking on at work everyday -- no

way could I get away with eating that many nuts! And he's always snacking on

cheese, salami, a glass of red wine every evening, low-carb candies and ice

creams, etc., etc. -- I don't touch the stuff... : (

Thank you so very much for the encouragement. I appreciate it more than you

know. I, too, believe that the road to healing is paved with the little things

we do to help others. I know for me, it takes the focus off me and my

situation, and onto the possibility of me being able to do something practical

or productive for someone else . . . as self-focused as I can get during

difficult times, this is essential for my well-being.
