That reminds me of the " Body for Life " approach to eating. Other than the " low fat " part of the diet, I agree with a lot of it. But one thing I really liked about the book was that he insists you eat according to the plan for 6 days a week, then do whatever you want on the 7th. The idea is, that 1) You can eat " forbidden foods " so you don't feel deprived and 2) You will discover how BAD you feel when you do eat those forbidden foods! I kind of work on that principle -- one day a week I make a big yummy gooey dessert. I don't eat it myself much, because now that it's only once in a while I realize I don't like them all that much and they don't make me feel good. My family eats less of them than they used to also.
