Guest guest
I have had stage 4 CMP in both knees. I have not heard the term end stage although I know there are 4 stages to cmp. I am not sure how old you are but my quality of life was pretty bad. I went through 8 surgeries trying to avoid a patellofemoral replacement. Then the doc said we need to do a patellofemoral replacement. If I had been older then he would have done a total knee replacement after the first 2 surgeries failed. But he didn't want to do it because of my age. Although they have a total knee that is supposed to last 30 years now he still didn't want to mess up the rest of the other part of my knee joint. I am supposed to have the other knee done in Jan. With out that surgery I would not be regaining my life back. Although I have stage 4 cmp in both knees I did exercises in pt, and at home and sometimes at the gym. I don't know if any one can tell you what exercise you can do. It's just like taking medication you could have different side effects then someone else on the same medication. Mine was so bad that when the doctor did an exploratory in Jan I no longer had a trochlear grove. So my knee cap was not tracking at all I had no grove for it to track. Exercises can be done it is just the matter of finding the right ones. I would not try to swim if it bothers you that much but I would try water aerobics or other water exercises. That is very different on the knees than swimming. I would also discuss the possibility of patellofemoral replacement because that is done in people who are younger and do not meet the criteria for a tkr. There are not a lot of doctor who can do a patellofemoral replacement so you might have to travel to find a doctor who can do it. But I have been living with this for 8 years and it wasn't until now that I have some hope of living a better quality of life having done the PFR. Also you can not assume people had early stage cmp because they did exercises. Everyone is not going to react to pain the same and also they are not going to have the same type of pain. I spent a total of 4 of the last 8 years on crutches and 4 of the last 8 years using a cane. So everyone is going to be different. I have had bone surgery on both legs, I am no longer bow legged or double jointed trying to repair my knees. So because pain meds did not work on me during that time my tolerance for pain has become extremely high. I spent every day since my knees gave out at a pain level of 7/8 on good days and higher on bad days. But I knew I had to do a certain amount of exercise regardless of my pain. after my first 2 surgeries my muscles atrophied really bad so I had to work even harder no matter the pain to regain my muscles. That process took about 2 years. So know that you are not the only one out there suffering. We are here in this group to encourage and give tips on things that have helped us. Those things might not help you but they might help someone else. Just keep trying until you find what works for you. Tara On Dec 4, 2010, at 1:19 PM, caroltoth73 wrote: > , I have end stage cmp. I also have severe burning in the hamstring muscles which at times equals the pain in my knees. Has anyone else had this happen and if so what can you do to help. I know knee replacement requires a lot of therapy and when I do any kind of exercises to help with the knee pain, it pulls these muscles. Even bending over pulls them and is painful. I'm very reluctant to go ahead with the knee replacement because of the burning/pain in the hamstring muscles. > > > > Any suggestions? > > > > Thanks > > > > > >
Guest guest
I agree. My Dr. finally told me not to do bone on bone exercises. I'm really afraid to do the knee replacement because of the exercises. My hamstring muscles just burn. When I just had my scope and they did exercises, I had to quit not only because of the knee but that burning. Now one thing I did find that would help was compression stockings. They really seemed to help those muscles in the back of my leg as well as help stablilze my knee. I just got some cheaper ones at Wal Mart. Don't even remember why I bought them, but they really do help. Going to have to find out more about the burning before they do knee replacement. What I can do to help it.
