I have just been talking to another offshore worker who works through agencies, a bit like some of us i thought. He has told me that he signs on at his local dole office when he is home, this then entitles him to certain discounts and payments, even though he earns a whack for working offshore. Does anyone know if this is true? I am all for getting what i am owed and would like more information about this. If anyone can help i would be most grateful. I know that some people will be saying why sign on and get free cash if i am earning more money than most people who are on the dole. Well i have paid a lot of tax over the years (A lot) and if signing on means that i can get 10% discount on my council tax then i want it. Also i have been informed that i might be able to qualify for free courses or grants towards them. I'm all up for that as well, and you never know when things might go wrong. Basically, you have to register for jobseekers every time you get to the beach and sign on whilst you are there, then sign off before you come back out. Each time your trip ends, you have to go through the registration process.It does make sense, as those of us who work agency don't pay enough NI to cover us for sickness or unemployment benefits. The other alternative is to make an arrangement with the Inland Revenue and pay your NI for the weeks that you are without pay. Personally, I can't be bothered to sit at the dole office for hours on my field breaks, hopefully I won't become a victim of my own idleness! With reference to the discounts, I don't know how that works, but as for the courses, you generally have to have been in reciept of jobseekers allowance for about 18 months consecutively. However, with reference to NI payments, as i am contracted " Self employed " via a company called PAYCO, cant i just make the minimal NI contributions so as i keep my stamp up to date.
