Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I have been struggling for a while to find some pain relief. I find that the typical PT exercises are doing little good to fix the tracking problem, but my surgeons at Hospital for Special Surgery are reluctant to perform surgery, especially a lateral release. They both seem to favor conservative management. They are hoping that I can realign the knees since the tracking was caused by orthotics. My questions are: Have any of you received any relief from a cortisone shot if your knee is swollen? Do any of you take NSAIDs on a regular basis or just use the typical alternative meds.? Has anyone had any relief from the topical NSAIDs? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Anne **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. Guest guest
Thanks, Jen. I've been hesitant about the cortisone shot. Anne **************It's Tax Time! Guest guest
Hi Jen, My doc at HSS is Dr. Wickiewicz, who is a great knee surgeon. The osteo is Dr. Feinberg. The surgeons who wanted to do the lat. release surgery were: Dr. Grelsamer (who wrote the book about how many surgeons inappropriately recommend unnecessary surgeries) and Dr. Cushner at the Insoll- Inst. I am also considering prolotherapy, but that means no NSAIDs or cortisone, etc Anne **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. Guest guest
Hi Meg, Thanks for the info. on Orudis. I'll look into it. I understand the issue about NSAIDs and cell growth. That's the same reason why one can't use it with prolotherapy. I hope your cartilage-generating surgery improves your condition so much that you won't need any more meds.!!!! Guest guest
Hi Jen, Yes, he does a full exam. He could tell from the exam that I had a tracking problem. He also did ex-rays (including sunrise ex-ray which shows a patellar tilt) and a high resolution MRI. The situation arose quickly due to the orthotics that were prescribed by another doc. And, yes, the osteo is also at HSS. He's the head of the dept. Anne **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. Guest guest
I got to the point where ibuprofen wasn't touching my pain, and took Celebrex for a while. It helped, but I found that another OTC was more effective - the brand name was Orudis (generic is ketoprofen) and it worked so well that I quit taking the Celebrex. Unfortunately, they quit selling Orudis OTC, the only reason I've ever found is that it wasn't selling well. But my doc found that I could still get it as a prescription, so until my surgery in February, I was taking it pretty regularly. My surgery was one that puts new cartilage in the problem areas, and NSAID's can inhibit cell growth, so I won't be taking anything for a while. Meg. Guest guest
I saw two orthos: one didn't give me anything, one gave me celebrex. When I do have a flare-up, I have found that celebrex takes a few days to kick in (for me at least). It definitely helps though! Cortisone did not help me at all. Guest guest
I had a cortisone shot. It brought the swelling down but didn't help with the pain. I won't get one again. I also stopped taking anti-inflammitories; I was on Aleve for a while. I haven't noticed a difference since I've been off them. The dull pain is still the same, constantly there. I am going to see an osteopath to address some possible imbalances and maybe try prolotherapy. At the very least, I'm hoping he can help determine some of the root causes. In the meanwhile, I'm restarting some of the more basic PT exercises. Good luck! > > Hi Everyone, > > I have been struggling for a while to find some pain relief. Is the D.O at Hss also? how long have you had this conditon? what did your x-ray and MRI indicate? Thanks again Jen Re: Re: new to group, medications Hi Jen, My doc at HSS is Dr. Wickiewicz, who is a great knee surgeon. The osteo is Dr. Feinberg.
