Guest guest
I think Hedy has hit on a really good point. The key to successful exercising is to find something that works for you and that search may take awhile. I have a recumbent stationary bike that works just fine, but I have to set the seat in such a way that's not necessarily recommended. However, it works for me, no pain, no soreness. It can get discouraging when you want to move but everything seems to hurt. Take a little notebook and jot down what equipment you tried and how it was set. Interestingly enough, I do better on a treadmill with the incline set fairly high than I do on " the street " . Some swim styles work better than others (forget " frog kick " , that hurts like mad)....After a while, as you get stronger, gently try some of the previous, " can't do " exercises and see if leg strength has progressed to the point where it doesn't hurt. As Ann has said, you've got to take it slow! It's the CMP mantra!!! It was very difficult for me to not overdo, and to accept that if I did some movement without pain it would be enough for the day. Somehow, I was totally stuck in the mode of pushing til I hurt...yea, real smart....probably caused all my problems ) nne Re: what kind of brace do you use? how do I get off the couch and back in life? For me, there are only 2 forms of cardio that don't hurt: 1. walking on the street, NOT a treadmill 2. The step machine at the gym. Not the one with big stairs like an escalator. The one where you take very tiny steps. You can still break a sweat from it. A lot of websites say that the stationary bike is safe for us. But, I feel pain instantly when I try that so I don't do it. -Hedy
Guest guest
I 've also had good results w/the step machine. No doctors believe me. And my gym got rid of its 4 machines. Guest guest
Now the step machines totally kill me! What I really love it the rowing machine…not the cheap ones that you can buy, but the expensive ones that take up a ton of space in the gym. My PT has one and that’s usually what he puts me on. He always tries the stationary bike, but that usually hurts me so bad the next day. I need to be sure to tell him that next time! Guest guest
I have to have my treadmill on an incline to avoid pain also. I have it set at 3 to start then usually keep it at 4.5 for most of my walk. Oh and one of my pt's told me that if I am doing an excercise and I am feeling pain in my knees, turn the way my foot is positioned because this changes the track of the knee a bit. Usually the first few minutes of every walk my left knee hurts a bit and if I keep going it gets worse, but if I toe out a bit till my knee gets " warmed up " I can finish my walk with very little or no pain. Guest guest
A rowing machine would split my kneecap in two. I wish I COULD row. Have you tried a recumbent exercycle? Guest guest
No, I haven’t tried one. What I need to do is swim…if it weren’t so blasted cold, I’d do that! I never hurt and my muscles get built up sp much faster when I swim. I just don’t feel like freezing to death on the way home…I don’t really like having wet frozen hair either. Guest guest
, I've noticed the foot position thing when I do the elliptical. Somedays the elliptical hurts, but if I re-position my feet, the pain subsides. I also wear a knee tracker brace that guides the knee cap towards the lateral (for me) side....that really helps me when I'm exercising and doing squats (gentle ones). Gym exercises are really good for me as far as building muscle, but, swimming is my preferred exercise to work on stamina and hearthealth. It really is very gentle on my knee. nne RE: Re: what kind of brace do you use? how do I get off the couch and back in life? I have to have my treadmill on an incline to avoid pain also. Guest guest
Good Morning!~ What works good for me is the recumbant bike. I bought my first one in 2002 and rode it until I killed it in 2006. I have a New Balance now, and it is a very comfortable bike. I use the pre programmed workouts three days a week, sometimes little more if RL allows the time. I also use weights, for thigh and hamstring work, as well as to round out the rest of the body. I can't do squats and any exercises have to be non weight bearing. But, as I have read in other posts, you have to start slow. Don't try and conquer the world in a few days. Thanks, Good Luck, Marilyn p.s. have 2 reconstructed acl's so I really don't need any type of brace. MJD <grgoofus@...> wrote: , I've noticed the foot position thing when I do the elliptical. Guest guest
Marilyn -- Since weight-bearing is important to bone health, I've begun to think about getting one of those small trampolines. Used to have one, but it was boring, but now have a TV in my exercise room. I thought since you don't have to bend your knees to use one, it might work out. I think I only paid about $15 for the one I used to have. Anyone here used one of those? Did it bother your knee? Guest guest
Good Morning Ann. I can't do any type of jumping or any type of impact. I have been without most of the meniscus in my right knee for 27 years. My OS even modified my rehab after my ACL reconstruction in 1998. I do a quad press, but have a limit on the amount of weight and the number of reps I am allowed to do. I think a trampoline would be great! Many years ago when I was a member of a gym, I could do the elipitical with out any problem, but not the stair stepper. Moderate walking and the recumb. bike work best for me. The upright stationary bike is painful also. Have a great day! Guest guest
In PT we will do some balancing exercises on one of the small round trampolines. I have seen them have someone do a slow run like motion on it also, but I have not done this. Don On 1/4/07, hedy_dilmanian <heds401@...> wrote: > > Isn't a trampoline jumping? Guest guest
Technically, yes, but unlike the ground/floor, the trampoline gives so the impact is much less than even walking, especially if you don't lift your feet off the trampoline. Joi Isn't a trampoline jumping? I am cringing thinking about it.

Guest guest
Like Don, I've used the little trampoline for balance, but don't think I would " jump " or " run " on it. Seems to me that even though the knee and foot/ankle arent' being punished by an unforgiving surface, the unevenness of the landing would maybe put undue pressure on some spot that doesn't have a lot of cartilage. But, like anything else, it all depends where your knee's sensistive spots are. I don't do well when landing on a surface that " gives " too much....like soft sand, or dirt, or deep grass... nne Idaho RE: Re: what kind > of brace do you > use? how do I get off the couch and back in life? > > I have to have my treadmill on an incline to avoid > pain also. Guest guest
Yep, Uneven or soft surfaces are a definite problem for me also. Heck, I won't even walk across the yard fast for fear of my foot hiting an uneven surface. BTW - I hit 120 Degrees at PT the yesterday (hoping for 130 tomorrow). That's a 50 degree increase in 20 days. That manual manipulation did the trick. Guest guest
I hadn't even considered working out with a trampoline! I could see that it might be useful, if nothing else I would think it might stretch muscles a little bit more, but I think I would want some sort of hand-rail set up to make sure I can keep my balance and don't strain my knees. I would definitely want to try it in a carefully controlled environment before bringing one home. Guest guest
Lucinda You are right about a hand rail. At PT there is a hand rails that you grab anytime you use the trampoline. Guest guest
When I first wrote about it I was thinking about the small one, about 3 ft in diameter. With that, I think one would get mainly gastrocnemius and ham/glute work -- not to mention the muscles of the feet that you never knew you had till you try cross-country skiing. And it would serve as weight-bearing activity so would help bones stay dense. Then when I read what you wrote I started thinking about the larger trampolines -- one of my neighbors has one in his backyard for his kids. And I thought how much fun it would be (once one get confident on it) to sometimes bounce on one's bottom -- you know, feet, bottom, feet, bottom. But then I got to thinking about my bad back. Oh well. Ann RE: Re: what kind > of brace do you > use? how do I get off the couch and back in life? > > I have to have my treadmill on an incline to avoid > pain also. Guest guest
Hmmmmm. Attached handle. I can see it now. Someone's bouncing lightly on their trampoline, using the handle, and a new song comes up on the radio, one with more energy. Our exerciser gets caught up in the tempo and bounces higher and wilder, and -- woopsy! End over end, exercise and trampoline together, and our exerciser's feet get hopelessly tangled in the springs, not unlike the time I fell off the (aluminum, with sharp edges) ladder washing my car on a seriously sloping driveway. And bonked in the teeth by the handle (this is how accidents always go -- you don't just get bonked on the head -- you're required to lose a couple of teeth). Suggestion: Attach a rope to the ceiling to hang on with. You can exercise your upper body at the same time as your legs. (Caution: To avoid quadriplegia, make sure the hook holding the rope is screwed into the middle of a joist, not the edge, and definitely not between joists.) Hmmmmm. Y'know, property installed, the trampoline/rope idea is actually not a bad one, if I do say so myself, and those of you who know me know that I will say so myself. Ann Re: what kind of brace do you use? how do I get off the couch and back in life? A trampoline with an attached handle might be helpful too. I found this one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000KGBUDA/nextag-sg-20/ref=nosim If that link doesn't work, it is called: " Cory Everson Rebounding / Jogging 40-Inch Trampoline " - Doug > > Lucinda > > You are right about a hand rail.
