I mkke rice packs. I use lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint oils. I also use lavender buds, peppermint and eucalyptus leaves. I have no certain formula I use, I go by looks and smell. I use long grain white rice and be sure to mix these up and let it sit in a covered container for a few days before putting in packs. I then put each pack into a sealed plastic bag. They heat beautifully, but I do put a caution as to not overheat as it will destroy the oils faster. HTH Rose
Guest guest
Dear , The lavender and peppermint will be fine mixed in with the rice (or some people use buckwheat hulls, others use flax seeds, or a combination of all three). I've made the eye pillows. They are smaller versions of the around the neck type. For the eye pillows I used about 5 parts flax seed to 1 part mixed lavender, peppermint, and hops....these are very relaxing. The essential oil would go away quickly with use, while the herbs continue to work for a long time. If they " wear out " you can always open a seam and refill it. Guest guest
- I just use normal rice from the Oriental grocery, and use the herbs and flowers (dried of course) rather than the EO, since the EO would evaporate pretty quickly. As long as they are not left in the micro too long they should not be flammable, and remember each micro is different. I tell people 2-3 minutes depending on their machine and how hot they like it. Guest guest
Hey guys, Hope you don't mind if I jump in and offer a bit of info on these. I spoke to a lady a few months back that makes these and they sell like mad (like she does them). I bought one myself... She uses flax seed, black beans and herbs in all of hers, then just before we put it in the microwave we spray lightly with distilled water alone, or with EOs added to the water. By spritzing, it helps keep the herbs fresher/last longer. One thing I decided to do since I use mine every day with at the computer is, open it, dump it out, and sew compartments or sections to put the contents in then seam it back up. The reason for this is, while hanging around my neck all the contents tend to drop to the ends and leaves nothing around my neck but cloth. The compartments/sections will make it equal out and stay that way so no shifting can happen. Now I'll jump back out like I jumped in. Guest guest
regarding the flax seed ... I have heard from some that the seed sprouted and/or grew mildew. I don't know this personally because I always use rice. JMHO Wallen Village Treasures ljwallen@... " Leave room in your garden for the angels to dance. Guest guest
How do you physically make the pack? I am not a seamstress so the easier the better. Thanks, a
Guest guest
Hi, I have a nice flax pack and I love it--the maker put in lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint leaves plus advises using the EO's with it also. I heat mine (a nice big one) about 4 min in the microwave if I need it hot, and it lives in the freezer because I find myself using it cold more. One thing with flax--warn folks NOT to get it wet and don't wet it yourself. The lady I got mine from says the flax gets slimy and it ruins the bag. Can they be frozen as well? > Jen >
Guest guest
OK I was curious with all the talk, what was in my neck roll I purchased (and love) so I opened it and dumped it out. I wanted to do the sections anyway, but what was in mine was flax seed, white rice, spearmint, or peppermint (hard to be sure but I think peppermint), chamomile and some other something light brown and flat, not sure but looks like bark of some kind, but tiny pieces. Mine can be frozen or heated in the microwave. label says 2 minutes max. It also said it had black beans in it and it doesn't. ;-p But I read they will also hold the heat well. My thoughts here, lavender would be an excellent addition and I'll do that before refilling. Thanks for the suggestions. I also plan to make one bigger, long and narrow to lay across my hubby's achy back or mine. Fun topic you all. I've enjoyed it and thanks for the inspiration to get started making some! Oh another thing this lady did was double stitch the ends, juuuust in case, better safe than sorry. Pam

Guest guest
Leaves I want to thank everyone who has contributed information and ideas for making rice packs. Guest guest
Hi Pam: That is just how I make mine. With the different sections, that is. It's so annoying when it all shifts to one place when you are trying to get it to stay put where you need it. Guest guest
Hi Alice, I haven't seen you post for a long time. Did you finally get settled in the new house? And how have you been doing? And the kids giving you problems? Hope that has straightened out for you. Years ago, my Dr. told me to put rice in a mans sock and tie the end. You can heat it in the micro to warm it up. I heard Flax can mildew and I don't know anything about crushed corn cob. The rice always works good for me. If I was going to sell it, I would put it in something a little nicer than a sock.
