Guest guest
Morning all, I was wondering if I could pick the brains of you tropical types out there. I'm afraid that this is an area that is outside of my experience. My brother is off to the Gambia at the end of October and has been advised to use Malarone. He (being the cheapskate that he is) wants to know if there is a cheap(er) way of getting this than the £210 he was quoted by his GP (him and his wife for ten days). I would be grateful if you had any opinions on this and indeed the choice of prophylaxis. If they get sick it will be a pain in the butt as I hate going to London at the best of times - and to visit malaria infected relations...... Guest guest
Hi Tim I would recommend Doxycycline, as I have had personal experience of this drug, I would hesitate to recommend Larium as when I was covering a TV crew in West Africa, one of the crew suffered from pnaic attacks whilst there (later related to Larium), and one did suffer from major psychiatric problems (Psychotic Symptomology) on his return again larium related. As a medic and a qualified RMN, I had screened this crew before going, only one of them had previous mental health problems ( depression) incidently the member of the crew who had previous did not suffer any ill effects during the trip and the other had no previous. I would say that if the person has any previous problems with mental health not to use Larium as it may exacerbate their condition. The only problem I found with Doxycycline was stomach upsets, and the time before and after the trip that the drug needed to be continued. check out the following link for info on Larium, and contra indications. http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharmaceutical/b2.prescribe.html You can also access info on Doxycycline here too. Guest guest
Doxy 100mgs q.d is a 4 times daily dose. (q.d quater die) is 4 times daily. (q.i.d quater in die) 4 times in the day (q.d.s quater die sumendus) to be taken 4 times daily once daily is (o.d omni die) Malaria Prophylaxis for West Africa/Sub Saharan Africa where Chloroquine resistance exists Malarone Begin taking 1 tablet daily, 2 days before travel Take 1 tablet every day in country (Includes offshore on our site) Continue taking 1 tablet for 7 full days after leaving country Doxy 100mgs Begin taking 1x 100mg capsule daily, 2 days before travel Take 1x 100mg capsule every day in country (Includes offshore on our site) Continue taking 1x 100mg capsule for 28 days after leaving country Larium (Mefloquine) Begin taking 1 tab once per week, Start 1-2 weeks prior to travel (Remember which day) Take 1 tab per week on the same day each week, every week in country (includes offshore on our site) Continue taking Larium once per week for 4 complete weeks after leaving the country It must be stressed to any individual taking anti-malarials, the major importance of following the regime for whichever medication they are prescribed, particularly when they arrive home. The major cause of Malaria among expat workers returning home is generally down to complacency and poor or lack of compliance. Quite simply they stop their medication which allows the Parasite to continue to multiply during the incubation period. cheers, Mark " \ " L.
