Guest guest
I’m still here, Don. Good work on your ROM! Keep at it… Let me know where the movies will be…I wouldn’t mind taking a peek at them. I have another Dr appt on the 13th with a Dr that has a great reputation. I will have to spend some time researching what can be done to improve my knees so I can ask about them. This guy hasn’t ever seen me, so hopefully he will be willing to do something. I have no idea what to ask about my hip. I got new orthotics and wore them for two weeks with little improvement, but at least they are more comfortable than the old ones. Any ideas or websites to look at for treatments? I can’t find the links I has saved… Have a great New Year everyone! Guest guest
Hang in there Joi. Keep us posted after the visit. I will try to post the movies. Some are short and should be no problem. Guest guest
Nope, still here Don....but guilty of feeling pretty good and managing the CMP. Great news about your ROM....looks like the MUA was definitely something you needed to " get back on the road " . Keep working it! When I first joined, I categorized myself as a 2-3 out of 10 on the " lifestyle " survey that was done. Today, I'd have to say I'm at about a 7-8 with days in the 4-5 and days in the 9+ range. I've learned that this CMP *can* let up somedays, while others are definitely elevate and icing days. I feel very fortunate that I've been stringing some good days together. Although not fanatical (that's not my personality) I certainly tip the scales on being somewhat obsessed with my knee/leg/lower body exercises. I've had a damn good physical therapist who showed me the importance of these exercises and made them seem doable. My legs are getting stronger every day, and the bad days usual come if I overdo my increasing amount of activity. I'm looking forward to 2007, knowing that, while I won't be cured of this cursed lack of cartilage, I can somewhat minimize and maintain a reasonable lifestyle. I'll continue to try things that may even help some more because the name of the game now is to preserve what I have as long as I can. You've got a golf date in 2007, right?? nne Idaho Happy New Year +more Happy New Year guys. Wow no posts since I sent out the Merry Cristmas. Bummer. Anyway. I got the knee to 115 degrees yesterday. Guest guest
I think Mark in Australia has that golf date. For me it will be 2008. But I will get back on the links. Glad to hear that you are managing your CPM. I think the exercises are something we will have to do for the rest of our lives. It's a small trade off to being relatively pain free. Guest guest
Here's a Dickensian Christmas tale for ya. Because my son, who asked me to move up here 2 years ago, is not speaking to me at present, I spent Christmas with a friend in California I had grown up with (this is a verrrrrry long friendship by now), about 1300 miles from where I now live. Thought it would be cool to take the train. Amtrak's Coast Starlight gives plenty of legroom, you can walk around, sit in the observation car, buy snacks, etc. Cost for a senior RT: $210. Beat the socks off an air ticket. Time for travel, one way, 24 hrs. The train left an hour late. For the Coast Starlight, this is practically a day early, so I wasn't displeased. I was able to leave my truck at the station, free of charge. Got on the train around noon. I had a taciturn seatmate, but at least she was thin. Up here, it's nearly dark by 4:00 and I made the mistake of sitting in my seat and reading the rest of the afternoon. Even with the generous leg room, I couldn't straighten out my legs, and my knee began hurting. Then muscles I didn't even know I had started cramping up. I hadn't actually known that we steerage customers were allowed to use the observation car, or I would have been up there a lot sooner. Then came bedtime. By then I had a new seatmate, a young lad of 21 whose main goal in life was to get near-fatally drunk by midnight. When he left to replenish his drink, I lay down across both seats. Now there really was a serious leg-straightening deficit, and my back was hurting. I wish I had reserved a sleeper. It would have cost another $300 for the RT, still cheaper than a plane. But I needed to save money. The drunken lad was nice enough to let me have the whole seat, & moved his quarters to the observation car for the night. However, I was hurting all over, my knee was getting worse, my other knee was hurting, my back was hurting, I had a headache, and, although I did finally get to sleep, at 5:30 a.m. a man with a rather large caboose sat on my head. Twice. The second time, I yowled. He barely apologized. No way I could get back to sleep. Went to the observation car to watch the sun come up. Sat next to a young woman in her 20's who looked like Sissy Spacek, stoned out of her mind (later I saw her w/o her hat & she had gray hair and was probably in her early 60's -- I guess the LSD had worn off). Sunset didn't live up my expectations. And I'm here to tell you that unless you're traveling through spectacularly scenic country, what lines RR tracks is junk even the homeless don't want. We did go through the southern Cascades, but it was night. I imagine they're really nice. Needed a nap. Appropriated a 2-person bench in the observation car & stretched my legs out on the floor. Doesn't this sound comfortable? Was a zombie all day for lack of sleep & everything hurting. After 26 hrs, I stumbled out of the train in Santa CA. Had a great Christmas with my friend, her daughter & son in law, and my friend's guy. They had lots of gifts for me. And lots of wine. Very nice. But when I tried to go for a walk with my friend, my knee hurt too much. Walking was one of the things we had planned to spend a lot of time doing on my visit, and I had prepared for it by eating a couple of nice pies & a batch of fudge the week before I left. My friend and I don't like the same TV shows. We saw one movie & ate out a couple of times, but mostly spent our time apart, using 2 different computers. I am now very proficient at FreeCell. I got really bored, decided I couldn't sleep on the train under any circumstances, made an air reservation. $300 (will get about $85 back from Amtrak). So as not to hurt my friend's feelings, I made it for Sat. (I had planned to leave Fri on the train). But after making this reservation, I could tell that she wished I'd made it for sooner, and news from home was that one of my cats was having a hard time w/o me. In the end I changed the reservation ($80 penalty) to Thursday and am now back home & my knee is better. I got an aisle seat behind the bulkhead. My cat sitter actually volunteered(!) to pick me up at the airport (about 40 miles), and waited for me while I broke into my truck, which was iced shut. To make my homecoming a little sweeter, I stopped & bought some KILLER cinnamon rolls on the way home. I think my knees are going to be OK. My bank account is going to hurt for a while. I don't even want to add up all those numbers & find out what the trip really cost me. I hope the rest of you had and are still having a very nice holiday visiting with family and/or friends & not gaining too much weight. Ann Happy New Year +more Happy New Year guys. Guest guest
Thanks. I feel a lot better now, both psychologically and physically. Knee is better. Here's some info people contemplating Synvisc injections might like to know: my doctor billed $162.87 for one of the three shots. As procedures go, I don't really think this is all that expensive, and as long as you have insurance. Ann Happy New Year +more > > Happy New Year guys. Guest guest
Hi Ann, Sorry to hear of your Christmas. Sounds like you had a hard time. I've never traveled on a train. Where do you live? A flight to CA isn't too much from where I am - WA State. It's worth it to get there fast instead of being stuck and not able to move around. Even so, it's hard to sit for almost any length of time. My problem is even when I do move around; I hurt more at this point. So, hopefully the new Dr will be able to help me with something. I can't sleep solid at night at all.I'm sure if I could, that would help. Hope your New Year is a good one. Joi
Guest guest
I live in WA too (Lacey). In the end, I paid as much as I would have paid to fly RT, or take a sleeping car RT. But I didn't know the sleeping was going to be so bad. When I checked flight tickets it would have cost me $650 RT. But it's possible I didn't check those cheap ticket sites, duh. What have you paid for a RT, and to where in CA? One of my problems was that I needed to land in Santa Barbara instead of a big city. Of course, this was Christmas season, i.e. gouge time. You're absolutely right -- it's worth it to get there fast!! Good luck with your new doc. Synvisc helped me to be able to bend my knees passively & have them not hurt (unless they were already inflamed -- there've been a couple of times when I've had to use knee tape (just one strip) at night to get the patella off the femoral head). Guest guest
Still here Mark! I still read every message, but haven't had much to add. A couple of new " voices " out there seem to have everything covered. Mostly I've been behind the scenes keeping our little Group free of Spammers. Keep up the good work everyone, and best of luck with all your knees in 2007!!! - Doug > *** Snip > where is Doug at nowadays??? > > Mark
