Mel,

It sounds like you have your bases covered and have done a wonderful job. I

wonder about a stool or two for potential customers to rest their hinneys

upon while they investigate your wares and sample your goods. Maybe a CD

player with " mood " music? Where I used to live, there was a small arts and

crafts shop. The woman always had out a dish of chocolates, those little

candy bars or kisses. She also put a ribbon and a sticker on the bag with my

purchases. I went to that store over others just because I liked the little

touches. Wear clean bright colors and a happy face. GOOD LUCK!! I am

excited for you.

Melody,

You go girl! Tiny samples of your product thrown in might bring people back

to purchase and will at least buy you goodwill. I love the music choices.

Since your theme is the beach, how about a Beach Boys CD, too?

-- Packaging question

I just bought 50 PET bottles that are shaped like bowling pins with black

screw-on caps. They will be adorable for bubble bath or bath salts. My

question is this...can I put salt SCRUBS in them? I just realized that I

have packaging for everything but my salt scrubs, and my first show is next

weekend.

HELP!!!!

I'm really nervous!! If any of my darling friends out there have some

suggestions for set-up, display, presentation, that sort of thing, I would

be forever in your debt. I'm focusing mostly on soaps, lotions, salt scrubs

& bath salts, and will have several gift baskets made up. I bought a

beautifully decorated pitcher and bowl set and will be giving demonstrations

of my salt scrubs and bath candies. Which makes me think...do bath candies

only work in HOT water??

I have purchased several yards of beautiful fabric to drape on my tables

(everything has a beach theme) along with several linen napkins that have

the same theme to put in my milk crates (which I'm using to display products

in).

I found a web site a couple of weeks ago that gave a wonderful list of what

you should take to a show, but my " favorites " crapped out and now I can't

remember where I got it. So everybody give me your suggestions and help me

make this first show something I can be proud of!!

Love, peace, joy, blessings, smooches, hugs, and slurpy wet doggie kisses,

Sage...and to everybody else, too!! XOXO

OOOHHHH...always leave it to my Sagie to come up with great ideas!! I just

bought 4 or 5 new CD's and I have several " meditation/relaxation " CD's too.

You know, like Rain and Storms and Ocean. And I am going to make a BUNCH of

extra bath candies and put 2 in each bag. I also just ordered a bunch of

little crayon sets to put in for kids stuff, too!!

WOOHOO!

I'm not sure either - but was is better PET or HDPE especially for EO's

Neither, EO's need to be in glass and so do FO's. the darker the better.

The letters refer to the type of plastic that is used in the container. I

believe that HDPE is food safe.

Good Luck, I have some wonderful serving baskets, in several shades of

wood(two each) long and wide I always use to display my salts etc. I add

flowers, etc., to color match the salts.

I'm sure you'll do great.

I believe PET stands for Polyethylene Terephtalate. This is the tough

water-clear plastic that most soft drink bottles are made out of.

HDPE stands for High Density Polyethylene - a tough high molecular

weight polythene that is stronger, more rigid and more resistant to heat

and solvents than LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene). Plastic petroleum

containers are typically HDPE, while milk containers and plastic bags

are typically LDPE.

Because many of the oils present in EO's have solvent-like properties

similar to many industrial plasticisers they can soften many plastic

polymers. Glass is definitely better to hold EO's.

So...when we make products containing essential oils, HDPE is what we need to

use for packaging, correct?

Thanks bunches gang!

I should have been a bit more specific as to say that these were for

lotions that contain these various oils.

I do know that EO's should only be stored in dark glass bottles - even

the violet/deep blue ones (like Butch's)

Ole' brain got a bit foggy as to which ones where better for the

lotions/body washes

Thanks again for all the info!

So, Bob, if I am reading this correctly then I could use my cottage cheese

containers that are marked #5 in the little triangle at the bottom to store

my sugar scrubs in? They have a small amount of fo and/or eo's in them?

Some of the components of EO's can attack polymers (plastics), making

them soft or brittle when they are present in high concentration. Glass

is definitely best for concentrated EO storage.

Surfactants and detergents can also cause stress cracking in some

polymers, so for products containing a lot of detergents care must be

taken.

Most recyclable plastics carry a recycling symbol so recyclers can sort

them. HDPE has the recycling symbol (2), LDPE is (4), PP (Polypropylene)

is (5), PS (Polystyrene) is (6).

HDPE is a good polymer for applications requiring good resistance to

many chemicals and solvents, but I think it is harder to work with and

more expensive to use so manufacturers will probably tend to make

containers in HDPE only where it is warranted, i.e. for industrial use,

e.g. big containers such as drums, gallon jars etc. So you probably

won't find too many HDPE containers in useful sizes for hobbyist use.

LDPE is generally fine for applications that contain EO's in small

proportions, e.g. as fragrance ingredients, and LDPE containers are

commonly used for many commercial personal care product preparations

Polypropylene (PP) is probably the best polymer for solvent and

detergent resistance, and I think most of the moulded jars used for

creams and other personal care products are now made of PP.

Have a look on the bottom of the jars used commercially. If they use PP

or LDPE you can probably use the same polymer for similar products.
