Hi-

Firstly, I'm sorry for your pain and inability to perform activities

of daily living; it's very frustrating and quite frankly, depressing.

I am 37 now and have had chondromalacia since about age 15. I had a

traumatic sports injury which started it all. My Ortho surgeons

throughout the years have all told me I have needed replacements since

I was about 25, but because of my age, I need to wait until I'm at

least 50. I have grade 4 in both knees with absolutely no cartilage

left at all that isn't frayed.

Though I am still able to work (I am a nurse) I do find it hard to

stay on my feet all day. Though I have minimal discomfort while doing

activities (I think it's a combinatoin of being accustomed to pain and

a high pain tolerance) I usually " pay for it " the next day.

Have you tried physical therapy? Most sports PT's are really good at

recommending strength exercises. I've also seen tons of posts here

for recommendations.

I wish you the best of luck and good health---you're not alone in your

struggle.

I have had chondromalacia patella in both knees since 1975. I have
dealt with the pain and discomfort with ibuprofen and heat/ice

since
then. In 2002, I had arthroscopic surgery to remove scar tissue

from
my left knee and it has been downhill ever since. I had to quit my

job
in 2004 because of the pain in both knees and I now cannot stand or
walk for any more than 30 minutes. My orthopedic surgeon and a
rheumatologist that I had seen have told me that it is just going

to
get worse with time and I said that I would just deal with it. The
only exercises I can do are leg lifts while lying down to keep up

the
strength in my quads. No more knee lifts with a weight bench or any
other type of exercise to try to help strengthen my quads. I now

take
2 Darvoset a day along with applying heat/ice when needed. I cannot
work anywhere anymore so I have applied for Social Security
Disability. I tried to work last year as a retail clerk, but

couldn't
take the constant standing/walking/squatting that the job required.
Applying for disability was a last resort, but I didn't have a

choice
being 50 years old with this condition. I am not whining about this,

I
just wanted to know if anyone else my age has had this as long as I

have.
I have chondrolmalacia patella in both knees too for the last 10

years, I am now 47, and my walking distance is very limited so I can

certainly relate to your situation. I used to swim to get aerobic

exercise and I would suggest you find some exercise that makes you

feel like you are not so immobile. In terms of knee exercices. I

use the cybex machine leg press stretched way out so my knees are not

bent more than 20 degrees. Also if you adjust the foot plate so the

front of your foot is higher than the back is helps to keep your

patella in the grove better. I started with one plate, now am up to

5. I had my husband install double handrails along the staircases in

my split level house and I use my arms alot going up and down.

I find it also very frustrating to be in the part of my life where I

have to plan even the simplist outings as to how much walking will I

have to do and plan my whole day around how much walking I anticipate

doing. I had no idea at this stage of my life I would feel so

limited. I hate having to explain any of this to someone who has no

clue to what a chronic problem is and in my case I look so athletic

people don't understand what I have to go through to get through my

day.

The only thing I can hold to is the belief that somehow I will come

up with some better solutions than I have now. I constantly peruse

the web I read medical literature, I try things that can be reversed,

I pay attention to the minute details that seem to help or make

things worse then try to find out why it does to better understand my

version of this. I hope some of this helps. Good luck to you.

le: I'm glad to hear of another nurse with this condition. I'm starting

nursing school in August, and was concerned about my ability to do the job.

Sorry to hear its got so bad! surely they can do something about, like

total/partial knee replacements. Do you think the arthroscopic procedure made

the whole thing worse, or did they carry out any surgery when they where inside

your knee?

dealt with the pain and discomfort with ibuprofen and heat/ice since

my left knee and it has been downhill ever since. I had to quit my job

in 2004 because of the pain in both knees and I now cannot stand or

walk for any more than 30 minutes. My orthopedic surgeon and a

rheumatologist that I had seen have told me that it is just going to

get worse with time and I said that I would just deal with it. The

only exercises I can do are leg lifts while lying down to keep up the

strength in my quads. No more knee lifts with a weight bench or any

other type of exercise to try to help strengthen my quads. I now take

2 Darvoset a day along with applying heat/ice when needed. I cannot

work anywhere anymore so I have applied for Social Security

Disability. I tried to work last year as a retail clerk, but couldn't

take the constant standing/walking/squatting that the job required.

Applying for disability was a last resort, but I didn't have a choice

being 50 years old with this condition. I am not whining about this, I

just wanted to know if anyone else my age has had this as long as I have.

When I had talked to my orthopedic surgeon about replacement, he said

that I was too young for replacement. I don't really think that the

surgery made it worse, I did get the flexibility back after the

surgery. He had scraped some scar tissue away and smoothed the bone

over. Well, I think that I never really took care of my knees the way

I should have considering their condition and I will be accountable

for that, but I didn't think that it would progress so quickly and

then give me so much grief at this age.

I was reading the DuPuy hype about their rotating platform knee. They say it's

been in use for about 20 years, and so far almost none have worn out. It seems

to me it's better to take a chance on a knee replacement for a young person to

get them back to an active life than force them to become inactive. (And the

same goes for us old folks -- why should we be forced to be sedentary if our

nature is to be active?)
