Have you looked at a TENS/ EMS machine? Great for building up thigh

muscles and going deep into the leg for stimulating and excercising

big muscle groups!!

For $180 they are a great investment and can pinpoint muscle groups

for working out as well.

Yep, I use a Empi 300 PV every day and it is the best thing since peanut

butter. I use a 4 lead setup. Two leads on my thigh and two on my VMO?

The mush to the inside of the leg just above the knee. When I started PT, I

could not fire that muscle at all. Now it is almost the same as my good

leg. PT says my quad looks very good. I will still keep using the machine

though. $150??? I have to pay $750 for the my EMPI.

Crikey ... it must be a flash machine for $750...!!

My TENS/EMS unit has 15 programs for the four leads - i don't suppose

you have a chart for the leg placements (or other parts of the body

for that matter??)

No. I have been looking for a chart, but no luck so far. Sound like we

Hey Don....might give me something to do ...i.e., look for a TENS/EMS

chart of key anchor points on the legs (and body).

Let me know if you find anything. I tried it on my bicepts once, but it

tingeld all the way down my arm so I figure I had the wrong points.

I'd be interested in seeing a photo with the leads in place. My PT

showed me how to use 2 leads; my unit has 4 leads though and now

you've got me wondering if I should be using both sets.

I just added a pic to the photo section showing where I place my

electrodes on my 2 channel system. The two electrodes on the left

side are channel 1 and the 2 on the right side are channel 2. On

mine, it does make a difference which channel you hook up to which

side. There is a delay built in to the channels so that it does not

all hit at the same time. Also, the intensity ramps up differently on

each channel.

Thanks for the pic. (Took me awhile to find it since you put it in the

'arthroscopic' section!) Here's a direct link for the curious:

So which side do you ramp up first? And do you think engaging both

sides is helpful? (And if so, why? It's not intuitive to me.)

I've long hypothesized that if I could tire out my other muscles and

then stimulate the VMO, it would be much easier to focus on it. Kind of

like the agonist-antagonist theory of stretching (Tire out muscle, then

stretch it.) but applied to multiple muscles.

The left side is the more powerful side. When I got the machine, I could

not fire my VMO at all. In 2 months, it has almost caught up with my good

leg.

As you increase the voltage on the machine, you can see the muscle start to

contract. It's quite something to watch. Of course, you try to make the

muscle flex at the same time. This will train you to fire the muscle.

Don, this is great advice for EMS treatment..hopefully June 22nd the

OS says I can start working my quads again after 10 weeks (no weight

bearing) and throw away the crutches!!!

Actually - does anyone want to see the cut for the carticel surgery/

the resulting atrophy/ and then maybe a before and after pic when i

start with the EMS unit?

If you are really interested do you want to see the carticel implant -

the OS took some pics..I could ask him for a couple?
