It has a shelf life of 6 months to a year. So could it perhaps be getting old? As to the colour fading - that is from using food colours I think. I never had good luck with them either and if they are left in light they will fade very quickly. I switched to cosmetic approved colorants and that problem stopped. Vitamin E will help a product keep from going rancid, so perhaps you didn't use enough? It doesn't preserve tho, so if there is any bacteria in the salts, say like from the food colors (which may be made with water) that could be it. And finally, the scent can fade if the salts are not kept in glass. Plastic can leach fragrance. You didn't say if you are keeping them in glass or not, but thought I'd toss that out in case they are in plastic. They need to be in airtight glass containers. I've had full cream dried milk powder go rancid very easily but I see you don't have any in your salts. Not sure if I've been helpful, but those are my thoughts. Guest guest
Di has answered most of your questions but I would like to add this. Try adding a bit of Rosemary Extract to prolong the oil's shelf life. It might also be advisable to let your salt mixture dry out a bit before packaging.
