Hi all,

I have a question. About a week ago I made a night

cream for my Grandmother (a present for her 83rd

birthday), which was a night cream. The main

ingredients were Avocado Oil, Cocoa Butter, Wheatgerm

Oil and a couple of others I forget (not major stuff

some Neroli and Rose EO ect). The cream was lovely and

velvet smooth the first couple of nights but now seems

to be a bit grainy. I remember seeing soming on one of

the groups about the temperature the Cocoa Butter was

melted at but I can not remember if you are ment to

melt it at a high temp or a low one. Can anyone help?

I am very happy to give this recipe out if anyone is

interested, it is expensive to make (with the EO's)

but apart from the grainy feel now is lovely!

Thanks in advance,

Rochelle in Oz

Hi Rochelle,

I also made a cream using Shea Butter with Sweet Orange EO and it turned a

bit grainy too. It was not so bad. It smoothed out once it touched my

skin.

I would also like to have your recipe if its possible. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rochelle,

I have heard of Shea Butter forming crystals that will cause it to feel

grainy. I suppose the same thing could happen to Cocoa Butter.

Here is the fix for Shea Butter that I copied from the list.

1) Heat the Shea in a double boiler until it reaches 175 F. HOLD IT AT

THIS TEMP FOR 45 MINS. THAT'S RIGHT -- 45 MINS @ 175 F.

2) Allow to cool to about 110 F. and then pour into sterile containers,

or mix with your other ingredients in chosen recipe.

The sustained heat will destroy the crystals, but the heat isn't high

enough to destroy the Shea. DO NOT OVERHEAT.

  • 2 years later...

I remember that post. I thought about it and just wasn't sure why. I've seen

similar things do this after a couple of years, but I guess you're talking

about a much shorter time frame.

My guess would be the fragrance is the problem causer, only because I have

no idea what might be in it. Try essential oils instead...maybe look into

emulsifier more stable than beeswax. Try making a batch without the

fragrance and let us know how that comes out.

Maybe you aren't melting the beeswax all the way down???? Use a double boiler

and melt it down first and then add the cocoa butter and completely melt those

two ingredients before adding anything else. I know the grainness is a problem

with ewax and stearic acid becuase they don't get melted down all the way.

perfume/body creams get grainy when they are solid.
