Guest guest
I had an LR done to both knees a little over a year ago, and it eliminated about 50% of my pain within days after the surgery. It is mostly a stop gap measure IMO designed to hopefully eliminate some or all of the pain when there is not a more serious surgery that the doctor feels conclusively will help with your pain. From my experience most of the people with successful LRs simply get on with their lives and leave these message boards. I have talked to a few who took the time to come back and comment. FWIW, it is my understanding LRs are also done many times in conjunction with partial and full knee replacements. I know it gets very frustrating with this kind of problem (anterior knee pain)----been there done that. I have read this problem is one of the most baffling in medicine. Guest guest
Mine (1995) was totally successful. Before it, I was so crippled I could only shuffle with a cane, and after it I was able to run (I'm not a runner, either). However, in 1999 I began to get ITBS in both knees. I wasn't able to get the medical attention I needed, so no help. Then I got chondromalacia patellae in the knee that had had the lateral release, and then I tore my lateral meniscus in that knee (probably due to age). After surgery to remove 2/3 of the meniscus (the surgery worked great) and smooth out the CP (didn't work), I didn't have ITBS again (I think the IT band will tighten up in some people in sympathy with other knee pain) as a regular thing, but if I walk too fast for too long, it'll start setting in. All I have to do to stop it is to slow down and/or stretch the IT band at the hip. My lateral release cut is allegedly still open, based on the MRI, but since the doc told me that & showed me the dark spot that is supposed to be the opening, I've read that the opening fills with scar tissue, so I don't know what's true. Anyway, most of the stories I've read from people who've had LR's were where they had positive results. Ann succesful lateral release after a year of CP and current debilitation, i am considering getting the lateral release surgery done. However, all I have heard from this board is horror stories about LR's. Has anyone had a succesful LR or even heard of anyone having a succesful one? -Adam

Guest guest
Hi I just had an arthroscopy and lateral release yesterday. I was in the hospital at 7:30 for pre-op, 11am surgery then went home at 4pm. I had to have my knee bandaged after surgery and also ace bandage wrapped due to my knee was leaking. However, I do not really feel any pain, its mostly just a sore feeling. I am using crutches, but I do put some pressure on my leg. Its a lot better than what I expected of the surgery and afterwards. I was given an rx for extra strength Vicodin, got it filled but didn't even have to take any so far. I am just using my Lodine (NSAID) that I was using before the surgery.....its sufficient enough. Before the surgery, my knee was grinding, cracking etc and I had constant dull pain. I do not feel any of that now, its just a bit sore from the surgery. Everyone will respond differently to any type of surgery......it depends on each case. I just wanted to put my positive feedback in on my surgery. - > > after a year of CP and current debilitation, i am considering getting > the lateral release surgery done. Guest guest
Congratulations! After my LR I had to use a wheelchair for 2 days & crutches for a few more. I didn't understand that, since the LR is on the side, not in the knee cavity. Looks like you got a better deal. Good luck with the long-term results. Mine fixed my knee up totally (until other things cause me to get CP). Ann Re: succesful lateral release Hi I just had an arthroscopy and lateral release yesterday. Guest guest
Well, its been 2 days since surgery and am even better now. I hopped around without the crutches and even drove today. I don't want to overdo it but am waiting to hear back from the OS to make sure I can put weight on it etc. I have a follow up appt with him but not till next Friday July 1st. I have a pretty high tolerance to pain/discomfort as I have had many injuries throughout my life lol....sprained my ankles probably 3 times or more, constant dislocation of my knees up until age 25, sprained arm twice when I was younger, broken nose when I was a teenager, many other scrapes and bruises when I was younger lol...... Its kind of weird that I am not having any pain besides the soreness, I was expecting really bad pain and was nervous about it but it never came.......or maybe there is pain but I am immune to it? Who knows.....all I know is that my pain before the surgery was worse than now. I still have not touched the extra strength Vicodin and just using my Lodine. If anyone lives in Ny state and wants a recommendation on an orthopaedic surgeon here it is Dr. Sullivan 1729 Burrstone Rd.
