REVISED Fw: [Knee-Pain] Re: Synvisc Injections

I had my first series of Synvisc injections in May 03 on the right

knee. I experienced no problems and within 2 weeks my chronic swelling

and grinding went away. My second set of injections was in April 04 on

both knees. My right knee tolerated it but after the third injection

my left knee swelled up to the size of a grapefruit. I was given a

Medrol series (steroid) and it calmed down right away. For the next

two weeks I was completely pain free. Since then the knee pain on the

left has returned but the right is relatively ok. I already have had

the arthoscopy on both and the scope showed very little cartlidge

left on either knee. My Orthopaedic says it is just a matter of time

before the TKR but I am to young and I want to delay it as long as

possible.

I believe in Synvisc, it is relatively benign. It is effective in many

people. It does not require any damm surgery, crutches, or physical

torture opps (therapy). It is not a cure but I think it is an

additional treatment option for those who can tolerate it and also

afford it. (Some insurance will not cover it).

I had a Synvisc series a couple of years ago. I have chondromalacia, and my

knee would hurt just from passive bending, like lying on the couch or when I was

trying to sleep. The Synvisc made that go away, although it didn't make it so

that I could walk any farther. I had surgery in Jan. & he scraped the

chondromalacia (in addition to removing 2/3 of my lat. meniscus), and now that's

worse. I'd sure like to get another series of Synvisc. My ins. covers it, but

when I suggested to the OS that I get it right after the surgery (thinking it

might help the scraped chondro heal), he said he didn't think it would help it

heal and " it's expensive " . Personally I do not care whether a procedure is

expensive or not. My employer pays my insurance co over $300 a month for me,

and it's up to the ins. co. and the provider to work out costs. Maybe next time

I'll bring up the subject again.

I had asked him to do a lateral release (I had one done in '96 and that

completely stopped my knee pain then until I hurt the meniscus & got the chondro

injuries due to my job), but on the MRI the cut shows up very clearly, so he

said a LR wasn't the right thing to do. But if I wear knee tape, I can do

things & get exercise. So it seems to me that something must be pulling my

kneecap laterally. Has anyone here had experience with having too loose a

MEDIAL retinaculum?
