I have been some places where ethanol is kept specifically for this process

it can also be given IV, It actually competes better than methanol for the

enzyme that breaks it down and so remains as methanol, Dialysis will be

needed as well as continuous Ethanol( oral or infusion) untill the Methanol

is removed.

The treatment of any poisoning in remote areas must be reflected in our

planning. It would be interesting to see how many of us have a bottle of

vodka handy for these events.

I quote from the BNF, " Ethanol (by mouth or by intravenous infusion) is used

for the treatment of ethylene glycol poisoning. Fomepizole (available on

named-patient basis from the UK National Poisons Information Service or from

IDIS) has also been used for the treatment of ethylene glycol poisoning.

Advice on the treatment of ethylene glycol poisoning should be obtained from

Poisons Information Centres. "

Hi Buck,

people used to laugh at me when I told them about this. By the

way, the amount you give them is dependant on body weight, 1 cl per kilo

Methanol poisoning!

Hi folks,

Those of you working in the oil production industry may well be aware of

this but I (after 20 years in the business!)have

just discovered that the immediate treatment for oral ingestion of Methanol

is -- 150mls of vodka!!

There is apparently some complex chemical interaction in the liver where the

vodka (ethanol)converts the Methanol to a

less toxic substance. I knew all that boozing would come in handy one day!

Fascinating stuff - but can you imagine the difficulties in actually getting

the patient to drink neat vodka -- without

ice, lemon and a splash of tonic!

Take care out there

Kev,

I don't know much about methanol poisioning, but I think after my last trip

on S. Explorer (Then Northern Explorer) I almost certainly had alcohol

poisioning

10 days tied up in Esbjerg does not do the liver any favours at all......

Hi All,

You do realise by publishing this we will now have a massive influx of

people queuing up for treatment

of supposed Methanol poisoning and deplete our much needed supply of

ethanol,

but i suppose there is always tonic water with ice and a slice but it just

does not have the same kick to it.

O well lets just hope the Teddy bears don't get hold of this .

I seem to recall I posted an algorithm for this on the resources page ages

ago, or rather Ross or Ian did on my behalf.

Yes this is true..... methyl alcohol is reversed with ether alcohol.

Our local ER/A & E stocks this in the pharmacy for those who choose to drink

automotive antifreeze for their buzzzzz.....

Take care!
