I have been to many many websites that claim their soap isn't made with lye... this doesn't make it true. They are using a M & P base that they have prepurchased so they themselves have not used lye, but lye was used at some stage. Making the claim doesn't make it true, they are simply misinformed about their products. > As for holding up in > court, well companies have won arguments with the notorious fine > print. Do you have insurance? I would talk to an insurance company and see what their stand is on your desire to use only natural preservatives. I would also speak to a lawyer to see what your legal standing in your state and country is. None of this is worth losing your house over if you get sued and lose and aren't insured. > Plus, I have copied the info from a few websites > that state when using GSE it is safer to state a 2-5 month shelf life > even though it may last as many as 10-12 months. Is it scientific data or it is just heresay? I would very gently and respectfully suggest that unless the sites you are quoting have scientific data to back up their claims that be careful about what information you take as gospel. I also follow up > with telling people (family & friends as I have yet to start selling > anything) that keeping it refrigerated is best. You will lose that follow up ability as soon as you start selling, and being on the label isn't always enough because lots of people don't read the fine print. And people will use your products in ways you never imagined! Would you have ever thought of a man wanting to use a peppermint foot scrub to help him get an erection? Gross but true. By saying all natural > it is my understanding, from the extensive reading I have done, that > all natural means NO SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS. That is why I use on EO's > and not FO's because FO's are synthetic. My EW is vegetable derived > and everything is made from scratch using all vegetable ingredients. The natural argument rages on every list I have ever belonged to. How far will you go for " natural " . Are your base ingredients organic? If not then chemicals were used somewhere in the manufacturing process. Parrafin and mineral oil are natural, but not my preference. Do you use beeswax? That isn't a " vegetable " . Ever received raw beeswax? The yellow kind that smells just like honey? All those black specks at the bottom are dead bees, but 100% natural. Your beeswax may be the white refined type, but at the beginning before it was refined it was full of wings, legs and other insect bits. > There are many companies out there that say they sell all natural > ingredients and that is not always a true statement because they use > synthetic preservatives. They don't get in trouble for stating all > natural and why is that? Here in Australia you don't have to list ANY ingredient if it is included in less than a 0.5% usage rate, which means I can throw in phenonip at 0.5% and GSE at 1%, put GSE only on the label and claim that I use a natural preservative. As long as I don't claim that I am 100% natural, I can keep the phenonip in and mislead the buyer to my hearts content. all of this is not an attack, just my take on the questions you have asked, and also my personal take on the masses of information available on the internet. The internet has given us all a voice, and my voice is quite loud! I aggresively market the vegan aspect of my soaps and state on my website that simply claiming a product is not tested on animals is not enough to claim it is cruelty free. I believe it must also not have any animal products or by products as well as no ingredients that were tested on animals. Although that is my belief, the Body Shop have a totally different stand on cruelty free and have no objection to putting lanolin and beeswax in their products and making the claim that they are cruelty free. Making claims on my website doesn't make me right, just opinionated. Make sure that the sites you have researched can back their claims up, and it isn't just someone like me waxing lyrical in an effort to make my products sound better than anyone elses. regards,
