Ben,

It really isn't a hate thing.

Most medics I know have nothing but respect for our IHCD colleagues. I

certainly do, and believe me I've learnt a lot from them with regular

attachments.

I'm surprised if some of the companies actually said " you're not good

enough " The real reason you were turned down is a legislative one, the HSE

recommend that a pre qual for the Offshore medics ticket is either ex

military class one (RN/RAF/ARMY) or Nurse. At the end of the day these

training organisations are registered to and answer to the HSE. I think in

one respect that you were lucky to be accepted for the course by Interdive.

That is not a reflection on your skills (which you will no prove on the

course) simply a legislative matter.

In truth you generally find that if you stick an IHCD para and a remote /

offshore medic in the same room for a hour you'll usually find that they

come out with mutual respect, once each realises what the other is capable

of. At the end of the day its the rule makers not the guys on the ground.

Its exactly the same situation when you reverse it, and ex class one

military medic applies to an NHS ambulance service when he leaves the forces

and gets offered PTS, again its not a reflection on his skills but those are

the NHS guidelines and the trusts follow them.

I consider myself to be a fairly experienced medic, and I regularly get

knocked back from jobs usually because I'm not a Nurse. Don't let it worry

you, it happens.

One piece of advice I will give you, if you'll accept it is this; be

prepared for disappointments, you'll get companies telling you they've got

work for you and they want you next week, you turn down work in the meantime

because you think you've got something then the first outfit ring you back

and say sorry we don't need you now. What I'm trying to say is be prepared

for this sort of biases, remote medics meet in in reverse occasionally from

some of our NHS colleagues at the end of the day you generally accept it

because you know that really its only a minority think like that.

Do the course mate, enjoy it, get out there find yourself some work and

don't look back. Don't sweat the small stuff it ain't worth it......

IHCD Qualfied Paramedics

Medics,

I joined this website a month ago now, did extensive research in working

offshore, got accepted on an Offshore Medics course - eventually, and when I

ring certain organisations - which will remain nameless - I got shot down.

I am aware that you do not like messages like this on your website, but, I

am sorry, but I think I have to say this.

What is it with IHCD Paramedics ? Does everybody think we are crap and not

worthy of a qualification !! Everywhere I ring - " Your not ex military,

ohhhh, sorry - you rnot good enough !!! " Are IHCD Paramedics so bad at our

job !?! We are the best trained Paramedics in the country !! Why do people

shoot us down for trying to make a better life and improve the skills and

knowledge we already have !!

This message is not meant to upset anybody, but I need an answer for the

reason why we are soooo hated !!!!

Ben

ben,

I am sorry that you got such a poor time when phoning round these companies.

Ian is right on the money when he says its a legal thing. the problem with

these woman in these offices, they are not medics, they do not understand,

they have never worked on a rig or remote location. all they are is a body

shop....

Its not a case of who is better than who; as you know, you have good and bad

paramedics in your service, We can not expect all paramedics to be like josh

on a saturday night (he would be a pain in the arse by the 10th day

offshore)same as we have crap army medics in the military who are only fit

to be let lose in the bedding store.

I would do as Ian says, stick with it.

Steve

Ben,

If your telephone manner is anything like your e-mails!! - you my wish

to address that as well!!

This job (remote/offshore - what ever) also has a lot of politics in it,

besides the legislative requirements.

To Steve's reply - there are body shops out there - but the major

oil/gas and service companies normally like to see a copy of the

candidates CV's from the agency. I have, in the past, been interviewed

by the client before being accepted on a job.

Anyway good luck, but do chill out.

If you get in to the industry you will be a baby at 22, I'm often the

youngest on a site and I am in me thirties.

Ben, to answer some of your questions

I am an equivilant as far as the ACOP was pre-2001

I am an ex NHS ODA/P but post qualification I was mainly working A & E

resus and MAJAX team member + trauma & obstetric emergencies.

I have worked overseas as a paramedic with acouple of guys who r on this

list, NHS paramedics whose skill level I would say was excelent.

and alan u know who you are!

and back to your dilema, I was accepted after consultation with the HSE in

Bootle. I did my course with OMS now Liberty now RGIT now ?

I have been working in the N.sea for the last 11 years with no problems.

I would say do the course if you can, there will be jobs out there for you.

depending on what u want, remote medicine, Offshore, vessels or diving boats

when the crunch comes if you have a current medics ticket + medical and can

be in stevanger in 20mins they will take u.

some of the larger operators are now only taking RGN`s but that is a short

term thing as the numbers of available medics reduce this policy will

change.

My current medic position has changed over the years from scribe and general

dogsbody to medic health and safety and am now spending a great deal of time

doing safety officer work.

in short do the course.

if you require any more info let me know

PS steveB you at home or in the sand ring me

denis

Denis killafew I tried ringing you but you was, probably in with the OIM

scrounging a signature for some dodgey time sheets again...

and before you ask NO....

I do not want to do your crimbo shift.... now that I am state Registered, it

means I am not qualified or experianced to do it.

Top advice to Ben by the way.

Ben :) if a scalley back a trog and a trolly dolly can reach the dizzy

heights, stick at it. mind you, to be a good offshore medic, you need to fat

as as frog, smoke like a trooper, blind as a bat, drink loads of booze, and

be known as the olympic flame - never go out.... denis I will try to call

you soon

I think what you are experiencing is a lack of knowlege of what you do and a

possible concern that your general medial knowledge not purely trauma and

immediate medical care broad enough.

Thats all I can say
