Guest guest
Do you have the URL for the advice about letting the " clot " set? Unless the kneecap is scraped into the bone, I don't think you'll even get a clot, because articular cartilage doesn't have a " good " blood supply. And even if you did get a clot, you wouldn't want it to come loose & be floating around in your knee. My doc told me to start walking as soon as I could. Guest guest
If I find the URL again I will send it to you. My doctor said that although he is not sure exactly where radiologists came up with the " class " of cartilage damage he said that mine is a class three, four being the worst. In short, they are going to scrap to the bone. Only a week on cruches though.....that is encouraging. > > It depends on how well you rest afterwards, I personally was on > crutches for 6 days, then took it a little more gingerly. > > Mona > > > > How Long on Cruches > > > > > > I am getting the cartilage under my knee cap scraped next week and > am > > trying to see how long I will be on cruches. Guest guest
They only recommended I used crutches for around a week for a scrape and lat release. You can walk without them (in my case) in a few days but LIGHTLY. I would recommend fore arm crutches I found them easier to move around on and you can walk with one using it as a cane with more leverage. Guest guest
I just thought of this reading another response (late bloomer, lol) if you have access to a wheelchair it is so much easier the first couple days. And also from what I've been told by my surgeon, the scrape by itself is much more forgiving than adding the lateral release, if you're having the scrape alone you will probably find it easier than what you think to get around. Guest guest
That's how it was with me. I don't get it though. With the scrape, you have newly abraded tissues, some of which may be bone, which has pain nerves, whereas with the lateral release, they just go through the knee space and there's no weight bearing on the lateral retinaculum. Any suggestions, anyone? Ann Re: How Long on Cruches I just thought of this reading another response (late bloomer, lol) if you have access to a wheelchair it is so much easier the first couple days. Guest guest
As far as I was told I have grade 4 (the worst?) they never said anything about scraping to bare bone, my surgeon was trying to save whatever I had left, if any. In my case I will have quite a few surgeries done to prolong replacements of both knees. I'm 24 and my surgeon and his colleagues have told me that unless some miracle occurs and I rebuild my cartilage in a couple years, I will need a wheel chair by the time I'm 30. Not something that I'm looking forward to. I know we are all different in our ailments but I never thought they'd just come out and tell you something like that, I appreciate the honesty but I hate knowing my fate. Does anyone here have a problem with stumbling/falling? I always blamed it on my knees but the doctors sent me to a neurologist for MS testing and that led to MRI's on my back. Found out through the MRI I have severe bulging discs causing interference with my nerves, doc gave me an EEG and after about 20 pricks of the needle there was no nerve response in my back. Anyway, he said the numbness in my leg and the loss of control was not from my bad knees its from nerve damage in my back. Ain't I just the picture of health!!? Guest guest
When you got your scrape and release, did they scrape down to the bone? I have a grade 3 degreneration of the cartilage. My surgeon said they must scrape all the cartilage out to the bleeding bone to form a blood clot, did you have that done? I have already had lateral releases on both of my knees (right knee-1991,left knee- 1999). Didn't know if all this info makes a difference on the amount of time on cruches. Guest guest
Not sure who you're addressing, but since I just had this done -- unfortunately, won't be able to answer till I see my doc next week. He gave me the impression that he was only going to " smooth " the ragged tissue back to the point where it's " whole " , not necessarily to the bone. Will let you know if I find out. Sorry not to be helpful here. Ann RE: How long on Cruches When you got your scrape and release, did they scrape down to the bone? I have a grade 3 degreneration of the cartilage. Guest guest
Have you looked into IAGH for your scraped chondromalacia? http://www.iagh.com/ I haven't had this done. I think someone here has. It sounds good. Better than nothing. Guest guest
From my MRI's it shows that I don't have enough cartilage left to smooth out. Going down to the bleeding bone to form a blood clot to act as cartilage, just not as strong or durable. > Not sure who you're addressing, but since I just had this done -- unfortunately, won't be able to answer till I see my doc next week. Guest guest
Good luck! Looks like a lot of us are getting scraped at more or less the same time. Can we make a scientific experiment out of this? (Just a joke.) Ann RE: How long on Cruches > > > When you got your scrape and release, did they scrape down to the > bone?
