Guest guest
Have you tried McConnell taping for your kneecap? Ann Elliptical trainer Hi All, I am a 27 yr old female and was diagnosed with Chondromalacia about a year ago. Went to physical therapy for a month and then stopped doing the exercises as I got pregnant and lazy Plus pregnancy somehow reduces the aches and pains and my knee just didn't bother me. But now, three months after delivery, I am slowly starting to feel the pain in the knee if I exert it too much. But I am trying to lose weight and would like exercise. Started walking from a month and the pain is still there. Can't walk briskly as the knee bothers.Just wanted to know if we can do elliptical trainers or is it just equal to running and not advisable....anyone here has any ideas to share? Ellipticals seem to help better in weight loss than walking.. -C
Guest guest
The taping has really helped me get around again. At the very least I feel that it helps keep the knee cartilage from being continuously irritated. Guest guest
After I had my operation (last Jan.), where he removed a torn part of my lateral meniscus and smoothed out the CP, I still have CP pain and have to use knee tape. My doc believes that once my VMO has been built back up, it'll counteract whatever's pulling my kneecap laterally. I'm not so sure, but am giving it the old college try. Anyway, knee tape has been my savior in the meantime. Ann Elliptical trainer Hi All, I am a 27 yr old female and was diagnosed with Chondromalacia about a year ago. Guest guest
When I had my lateral release in '95 I'd say maybe 10 days. I don't know why it was so painful after the operation, because all he did was go through the knee & cut the lateral retinaculum, but it was very painful for a few days. After my scope last Jan. I had zero recovery time in terms of internal knee pain. You'd think after he cut off part of the meniscus and debrided several areas of chondromalacia, it would have hurt like hell, but it never did. I did have swelling for a month or so, and this limited the amt I could bend my knee, but no pain (except of course, when I did anything requiring the patella to rub against the femur). Guest guest
A scope is just the type of surgery they do and it all depends on what they do inside your knee and everybody is different with recovery.I had a LR at the beginning of June and it was an open surgery and I found it the least painful of all my surgeries. All the rest where scopes and the fifth surgery was the most painful because they did microfracture under my patella along with some other stuff. I still have the pain from my last surgery but the bone on bone pain is gone. I personally think the quicker you can get to PT after surgery and get your muscles and ROM back plays a major roll in pain and recovery. Good luck with your scope. > When I had my lateral release in '95 I'd say maybe 10 days. Guest guest
By " open surgery " do you mean they cut you from the outside on the lateral side & did the LR from there? I'm interested in this because if I have another LR, I'd like it done from the outside if they can. Guest guest
They did an open and a scope on me the last time. I have about a three inch cut down the middle of my patella and a hole from the scope on the inside of my knee near the bottom. The reason he did this was because if the LR didn't work then I would have had to have a TTT and he could use the same cut. I posted a picture after surgery if you want to see what it looked like. I saw my OS earlier this week and he cut along the lateral side and along the top of my patella. He said it was a large lateral release. The first night was hell when the freezing came out but I have been doing great ever since. My OS, GP and PT can't believe the difference this surgery has done for me. I knew the day after my last surgery in November it didn't work and this time I knew the day after it did. My patella used to rub against the groove every step I took and it hurt like hell every day. I used to eat percicet like smarties before the LR and now I'm down to one in the morning and one later on in the evening. http://ca.f2.pg.photos./ph/kneessuck/album?.dir=/a5ca > > When I had my lateral release in '95 I'd say maybe 10 days. Guest guest
I thought I would add one more thing that I forgot to say earlier. When I took the tape off I thought there would be a bunch of stitches but to my surprise all that was there was a cut. I guess they stitched the inside of the cut and then just put tape on the outside. It looks just like a scratch and not a nasty scar. > > > When I had my lateral release in '95 I'd say maybe 10 days. I'm tired of waiting for my VMO to develop & wish my OS would just go ahead & do an LR, but I see his point. Guest guest
I think they always knock you out when it's an open procedure but I'm not sure. My knee might look bad but it feels better now than it has in four years. I have been doing my exercises at home and PT 3x a week. I have read that some people are still on crutches until four weeks post op but I could walk the second day. This surgery is not for everybody with tracking problems but so far it has given me hope to getting back to some of the stuff I thought I could never do again. My OS and GP seem to think that I could be golfing by the middle of July and I can go back to my old job. My employer was trying to get rid of me for the last year because of my knee problems and surgeries. My OS changed my duties to sedentary before I had this surgery and they said there was nothing wrong with my knee and I went and got surgery(7x) to get an easier job. I'm not going to get into that much as there is not enough in this forum for that story. > > > > When I had my lateral release in '95 I'd say maybe 10 days. > I > > > don't know why it was so painful after the operation, because > all > > he > > > did was go through the knee & cut the lateral retinaculum, but > it > > was > > > very painful for a few days. Guest guest
Why would you not want arthroscopy? It was developed specifically for drastic reduction in surgical pain....less unnecessary cutting equals less pain. I had one of the first appendectomies done locally by scope about 12 years ago. I didn't even hardly know I had surgery. Open surgery is easier for the surgeon. I'm sure they wouldn't argue. Guest guest
I agree with mike about a scope over an open surgery. There are alot of OS that do a lateral release through a scope but some prefer to see exactly what they are cutting. My OS wanted to see the inside of my knee to make sure he had cut enough to make my patella sit right again. I had a pretty bad tilt going on in there and he wanted to make sure so we didn't have to do it again. He used the scope for my meniscus and did microfracture on the groove that my patella was rubbing against. I believe that most open lateral releases are done on the lateral side of the knee but like I said before my OS thought I would need a TTT if this didn't work out and he could use the same cut. > Why would you not want arthroscopy? Guest guest
I found out that if you try to take your pain meds before your pain gets too bad the first few days after surgery and then start using them as needed when the pain eases off. Some people get worried about getting addicted to pain meds but if you have pain then take them, thats what they are for. You will know when to back off. If you don't have pain and you continue to take them, then you have a problem. > > > When I had my lateral release in '95 I'd say maybe 10 days. Guest guest
It seems to me that for a lateral release (or IT band release) done from the outside, they could just inject you with Novocain or whatever they use when it's not your teeth they're working on (I think it's bupivicaine or bipuvicaine or something like that). That they could inject the skin area, then the IT band, then the retinaculum, or all at once. Guest guest
Because I don't like being knocked out. I think arthroscopy was developed for extensive inner knee surgery, and/or repairing ACL/LCL's, etc. When I had my LR done, part of my vastus lateralis was cut (my OS said this is common). I don't know how the lateral knee tissues are layered, but apparently the LR is outside the VL. If they came in from the outside, I'm assuming they wouldn't have to cut part of the VL to do the LR. That's why I'm interested in an external cut. I don't care about the scar. Guest guest
A lateral release it not a little surgery. You must have better pain meds than me if you could handle not being knocked out. If you get sick from anaesthetic then talk to your surgeon/anaesthetic Dr and I'm sure they can do something for you. You could also ask them about a spinal but for me I just want to go to sleep. From what I can remember about the OR room is that it's cold, the table you lay on is too small (I'm 6'3 " )and my surgeon has rubber boots on. Why would you want to be awake? > Because I don't like being knocked out. Guest guest
I think this is something you would want to discuss with your surgeon. Again, the only reason I understand arthroscopy was developed was to drastically reduce surgery trauma. All the surgeries now done with it that I know of were done before arthroscopy was even developed. I'm not sure I would want an incision directly over a lateral release anyway. With a LR you are already cutting most of the connective tissue between the kneecap and outer skin. If that were the case, I would think it would be hard to get an incision to heal over a LR, especially if you wanted to use the knee any time soon. I understand what you are saying about scars though. I have so many scars I always wear long pants and a shirt . Mike MT Re: Elliptical trainer > Because I don't like being knocked out. I don't know how the lateral knee tissues are layered, but apparently the LR is outside the VL. If they came in from the outside, I'm assuming they wouldn't have to cut part of the VL to do the LR. That's why I'm interested in an external cut. I don't care about the scar.
Guest guest
I don't understand why an incision in the skin overlying an incision in the LR would take longer to heal -- ?? I'm sure you're too young to remember, but when I was a kid there was a movie entitled " Ten Scars Make a Man " . Believe it or not, me being a girl and all, this movie had a profound effect on me. I understood that " A Man " meant " brave " and, being 10 or so, I wanted to be seen as brave. So I've never minded getting scars. Of course, if I had a deep scar across my face, I'd probably mind, esp. since I'm into plastic surgery for looks. I guess half of you are going to start thinking of me as shallow now, since I believe in plastic surgery. Ann Re: Elliptical trainer > Because I don't like being knocked out. Guest guest
That was just my personal theory. I am not a doctor.
