Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I have a question about the shelf life of several oils. I bought a large quantity of different oils in order to make soap but I came down with a chronic illness and left them at room temperature for a while. What is the shelf life of: palm oil-opened then closed back up coconut oil-opened then closed back up olive oil-unopened avocado oil-unopened wheat germ oil-unopened mango butter-unopened shea butter-unopened powdered goat milk I appreciate the help very much. Have a good day! Drae

Guest guest
Everything but the Wheat Germ Oil and the Avocado Oil should be good for a couple of years. Wheat Germ Oil has always been said to have a short shelf life(like under 6mo)which is odd since it has so much Vitamin E in it. Avocado Oil is supposed to be a 6 monther too. Having said that, there are a couple of things you can do. Both being unopened(a good thing)you can add ROE or T-50 to them as soon as they are opened. That will extend their lives. Being unopened, while a guarantee against spoilage certainly slows it up. And, having said *that*, I have year old WGO and AO that are fine. Guest guest
>Both being unopened(a good thing)you can add ROE or T-50 to them as soon as they are opened< At what percentage should either of these be added? And is there a difference in Rosemary Essential Oils? It seems to me that I read somewhere that there was, pardon me if I am mistaken, I'm still learning to work with essential oils. I know there is a difference in the Vitamin E, and I have the T-50 available, was just curious about the ROE. This is a great list and I have absorbed a great deal from your messages. Thanks for being a wonderful resource! Sandy
Guest guest
ROE is not Rosemary EO...it is Rosemary Oleoresin, a dark brown, gloppy material. I doesn't stain your oils because you only use it at .002 to .01 percent of your oil amount. If you have T-50, I'd just go ahead and use that at ..01-.02 percent although the evidence is unclear whether or not the T-50 survives saponification to protect your oils in the soaps. I have never had any trouble with soaps going bad even when I don't use the T-50 or ROE. Nowdays, however, I just treat all my short lived oils with ROE as soon as I receive them. Guest guest
Thanks for the information - since I use MP I don't need to worry about the saponification part. But I do use oils successfully in my soaps and would like to keep them as fresh as possible. I have been soaping since last Oct (2002) Eventually I'd like to do CP, but I'll have to wait and see. I have a terrible time with strong chemicals and scents - I can't breathe around them, or they burn my sinuses even with proper ventilation. That's why I started with the MP. I've learned SO much here, thanks for the help! Happy soaping! Sandy
Guest guest
Sandy, When you do try CP soap, you could try a couple of things to help the problem you describe. One is the simple 'operating mask' type protectant. It works well for me. Others, who are really sensitive, use one of those painters breather masks that look like the front of a Hammerhead shark. They'll handle anything. Since the fumes are a problem for less than 5min maximum, it wouldn't be a real trauma...you'd only need the mask for 3 or 4 min for each batch. And, if the fumes bother your eyes(they don't mine), a pair of goggles do the trick nicely. Again, just for a couple of minutes right after you put the lye into the liquid. Good luck, Re: Shelf Life of Oils Thanks for the information - since I use MP I don't need to worry about the saponification part. Guest guest
Marge Could you please elaborate about your comment of adding " nitrogen " to top off air space in bottles containing oil? And is this used for EO as well? Sherry _________________________________________________________________ Get 10MB of e-mail storage!
