Question - old kefir/grains

I and my husband have been enjoying kefir for some time now-- made from milk,

juice, and water. I just love this stuff!

But I've got a question to run past you here.

In the back of our refrigerator, I happened across some kefir and some kefir

grains soaking in goat milk-- these were both dated 10/5/11. I haven't drunk

kefir that's a month old. Is this ok? I'm thinking it may be, as it's been in

the back of the fridge where the temp's pretty steady, and it looks and smells

fine. But I wanted to ask some more " seasoned " kefir people here to see what

your input may be.

Thanks in advance!

I would say it almost undoubtedly is not " bad " as in harmful. It is

only in your taste buds and if there are ingredients which will modify

it sufficiently to your taste. It may be unbalanced, (more yeasts than

other microflora for example) but not " bad " . It is almost impossible

for the " baddies " to get past a fermented kefir which is kept clean.
