Guest guest
I went onto the kefir list and asked for grains. They posted a link where sources for grains were listed and I found some in my town of Eugene. I am sorry I don't have an address for the group or the grain sources. It is a group and so just doing a search at should enable you to find it. It is hosted by a guy named Dominic who is a kefir expert. The list has awesome kefir info for making kefir butter or kefir cheese. Just a great group. Guest guest
I have some kefir grains but I live in Andover on the north side of Mpls about a half hour. I'll be happy to send you some if you are not able to find some one closer. I would also be interested in the kombucha culture. Let me know what would work for you. Kefir Grains Hi All, Is there anybody on this list who has kefir grains to share AND who lives relatively close to Rochester??? I can trade a Kombucha culture if anyone is interested. Oh... if you have kefir grains to share, and live near Savage (Minneapolis), perhaps my husband could pick them up after work.... Many Thanks! Guest guest
Kefir grains can't get too big. I had one for a while that was about the size of a golf ball, and it eventually split up on its own. I've had my grains for almost a year, and from what I've seen, the grains tend to get bigger if you don't have a tight lid while fermenting, and stay smaller if you do. But that's just my experience, I'm sure others have seen differently. By the way, I always have extras if anyone needs some. . .
Guest guest
I keep my grains tightly covered while fermenting. Well, I should say I always keep them tightly covered. I use a 2 quart canning jar with a ring and lid for making my kefir. If I need to store the grains for when I go out of town, I use the same jar and lid. I did use goats milk a few times when we were out of town because I ran out of my real milk. The grains seemed to really like the goats milk. I also give my grains a nice and quick cool water rinse every few weeks. Seems like they grow faster and better when I do that. I don't rinse them clean, just get the major stuff off. I wish I could say that I have extra grains, but I have been busy giving them to friends and have some saved for a trade too. I hope I can offer some in a few weeks though. Guest guest
, Someone at the swap this Saturday should have some. Are you coming? Therese
Guest guest
I have a lot of extra kefir grains, and I'll be coming to the swap on Saturday. As for 's volume question, I drink about a quart a day, have two jars on the counter at all times, with about a cup of grains in each one-- pretty sour/strong. I'd suggest to start out a little weaker than that, so you'll want maybe a cup to start out with, and then they multiply pretty quickly. If anyone else coming to the swap is interested, please let me know, so I have an idea of how much to bring. . .
Guest guest
, Thank you for the information. I think I will be able to make it on Saturday but not until after noon some time. I've heard about the swap...and it is even quite close to home...but what exactly is is? Based on my limited knowlege I would say I am looking for around a cup of grains...but who knows? I figure more will always grow, or I can pass any extas along. Thanks again, ~ > > I have a lot of extra kefir grains, and I'll be coming to the swap on > Saturday. > As for 's volume question, I drink about a quart a day, have two > jars on the counter at all times, with about a cup of grains in each > one-- pretty sour/strong. Guest guest
dried kefir isn't the same thing at all. It stops working after a few goes whereas the living stuff grows and eventually begs to be given away and emigrate for pastures new Sally stephaniesirr wrote: > > > The Kefir grain shop seems to have stopped trading. Guest guest
Hi Nina You can keep them in the fridge submerged in filtered water for quite a few weeks in between uses. Opinions differ on how long you can stretch this for. I wouldn't fancy using them after much more than a month. Guest guest
Are you using water kefir grains? In that case, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. We don't let them go more than a week without brewing them.

Guest guest
Hey all! Thank you so much for the responses. I'm planning on being back up and running by later next week. We have found a temporary solution to our dog containment while we save up for something bigger and slightly prettier. It's a good thing she is really, really sweet! I am so thankful to have found a group of people who are willing to share their knowledge...and grains Natasha
Guest guest
Hello! I saw your post on the kefir grains and wanted to let you know that real grains you get from other people will last indefinately while those that are purchased at stores, like Yogourmet, only are good for a few batches (like yoghurt starters.) So if they have limited availability to stores then the real live grains would be their best bet for long term use. I belong to an international group that is about kefir ( Kefir_making/?yguid=456414778 ) and you can join it and get information, or if you tell me where those people visiting the US will be I will ask on the kefir forum to find out if someone is near there to meet. People on the kefir forum also ship them and charge just to cover the cost of shipping, usually $5-8 (domestically) so they could have the grains shipped to the location in the US ahead of time and arrange for their care until those people arrive. If the logistics of care before arrival are difficult maybe someone on the kefir forum that is close could just ship them directly to Malaysia? I think the way to bring them on the airplane would be to dehydrate them or keep them in small baggies that are double wrapped and get back in milk as soon as possible. It's more difficult now with flight restrictions but I know it has been done; I can ask on the kefir forum and see what people suggest for transit. Guest guest
I purchase Kefir Grains from Linden Hills coop, at 44th and France. They are in the cooler in the dairy area, next to the Joghurt starter.
Guest guest
I've never found real kefir grains in coops, so probably what you are referring to is the freeze-dried culture that resembles yogurt starter in sealed packets. That is a modern version of the real thing which these days can only be obtained from someone who is a caretaker of the grains. The real kefir grains will last you entire lifetime (if you care for them properly as they are a living organism), while the commercially available dried culture has to be replenished from time to time by buying more. They dried culture does not have the full spectrum of microflora (beneficial bacteria and yeasts) that the real kefir grains have, but is convenient when your lifestyle prevents you from a long-term commitment to caring for real kefir grains. Guest guest
Ah. Hm, in using raw milk for kefir, does one get a chance at more of the cultures? > > I've never found real kefir grains in coops, so probably what you are referring to is the freeze-dried culture that resembles yogurt starter in sealed packets.
