When I get the shells I just rinse them really well and keep them stored in any

kind of container. They seem to store fine.

Subject: egg shells

Is it alright to boil a number of egg shells and keep them refrigerated?

Or in an airtight container. Seeing as the kefir is done in such a few days, I

don't always have an egg shell, but on weekends it seems everyone uses eggs and

I have lots of shells available.

Shari,

Is there a specific reason to boil the egg shells? They chickens eat out of the

ground and there is all kinds of bacteria and stuff out there.

I always put my halved, boiled egg shells into a baggie and refrigerate until I

need them for fermenting water kefir. I've never had any problem doing that.

Thanks, Sherre! I have quite a few from a weekend brunch. And they are from a

friends' chickens.

What about shells from hard boiled eggs? Do I still need to boil them, again?

Dunno the answer to that. I have just learned about egg shells here, never had

heard of putting them in with WKG before I joined this group.

Boiling the eggshells is to kill any Saminillo or other bacteria that is on the

outside of the eggshell. I tend to not worry about germs on my range chicken

eggs BUT IF I used 'factory' produced eggs (where poor hen is confined in small

space never to see the open air & even touch earth & worse) I would worry about

it and would boil my shells. So boiling is to kill any lingering bacteria.

site suggest (rinse) egg shell, no mention of boiling.

What is an egg shell made of ??

To Alice - Reason to boil egg shells

Boiling egg shells to kill salmonella is good idea Alice, although the good

bacteria in Kefir is suppose to kill the bad bacteria. I have read where ecol i

implanted into Kefir was killed off by the good bacteria. Anyway better safe

that sorry. So the correct answer is boil egg shells to kill salmonella before

water Kefir use. Great tip!

Since the shells of boiled eggs are already boiled, you do not need to boil them

again before adding to your kefir to ferment. Just make sure you don't get any

" egg " into your water kefir.

Sometimes my eggshell is all eaten up, with only the membrane left after

fermenting a couple of days. Other times, the shell is only partially consumed.

Guess the little guys eat when they need it!

If you grow any edible plants, you can add the shells to a compost tea, which

mineralizes the soil with calcium, and in turn that is taken up in to the plant.

Herbs, leaf lettuces, leaf cabbages, baby veggies, etc. are all very easy (and

fun) to grow, or even sprouting and microgreens are great starter hobbites.

With sprouting, you can harvest a " crop " in about 4 days! You can use the

calcium water to mist the sprouts. (sprouts don't NEED any nutrients, but the

extra boost won't hurt) Happy to share info on sprouting on the OT list, if you

like.

soy free non GMO fed. I wash the eggs well before using but am not comfortable

eating those eggshells in case I missed something. But when we boil eggs I want

to eat those egg shells. I have heard some people talk about putting them in

something to leach the minerals and some people have said something about

grinding them and including them in their diet. Anyone have experience

including them in a vitamix shake? What juice would I had them to to leach the

minerals into the juice? I had a bit of apple cider vinegar to the cold water

at the beginning of bone broth to leach minerals - is there another choice for

the egg shells? Hate to throw away edible, absorbable, bio-available calcium in

these shells but also don't want to waste other shake ingredients if it doesn't

work out.
