Guest guest
phine - what kind of direst set culture did you use, and where did you buy/order it from? Thanks- ie The only time I got bubbles (so far – my REAL grains have only been here less than a week) was when I left some NOT kefir (direct set culture) in an air tight bottle in the refrigerator for two or three days (while I was still adding new to the rest of the bottle – So I don’t think you have to have separate bottles), but if you do keep it separate, open or “burp†the lid daily to avoid a mess ________________________________
Guest guest
Hi ie, I used this http://www.cheesemaking.com/store/p/146-Kefir-2-packets.html This wasn’t even the culturable version, but it did work for a while after I didn’t use too much powder for the amount of milk. At first I used just a quart with the package that is for a whole gallon – it wasn’t good. About a week later, I used ¼ of the 2nd package to a quart of milk. Every day I would pour most of it out and refrigerate and/or drink or smoothie some. Then added milk to about 1/8 cup left in the culturing jar. After about a week, I noticed that the bubbles on top were different than the bubbles from shaking, then a few days later it was effervescent. Then my grains arrived and I drank the rest of the other and have been using my grains only. I agree those on the forum who say true Kefir has to be made with the grains. I ordered the direct set because I was ordering cheese cultures and wanted to taste Kefir before I committed to the grains. I am hoping for effervescence with my grains soon… J As a follow up to my earlier post – my cow keifer isn’t making curds – it is more grains! I rinsed them in bottled water and discovered tiny new grains. They sure are growing fast! phine From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Frances Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 11:44 AM Subject: Re: Re: Kefir? off-topic: direct set culture phine - what kind of direst set culture did you use, and where did you buy/order it from?
