kefir grains - loose or a mass?

When I was gifted some grains a while back, there was one smallish mass

in the jar with a little milk. Now I have a much bigger mass that I am

ready to gift to a few patiently waiting friends. I have looked at

numerous websites on making kefir and the grains in the pictures seem to

be loose rather than a mass. Just wondering what others have and if mine

are supposed to be loose.
