Kit -

I agree, it is a little heavy on the carbs side. I try to balance it

by adding protein powder, but I haven't found one I really like. I'll

keep trying! Maybe I'll try cottage cheese.....

With the tofu, w/o added protein powder, the recipe breaks down like

this:

205 calories

2.3 grams of fat

18 carbs

3 fiber

18 protein

If these calculations are correct...it is NOT " heavy " on the carbs if you are following the BFL book. If you are following Sugar Busters or Atkins, yes...it may be heavy on the carbs. Remember....BFL is BALANCED carbs and protein. This breakdown says 18 grams of each - that's as balanced as you can get!! If you are trying to obtain the results that you see in the BFL book and Muscle Media magazine, you need those carbs for the energy to get through the intense workouts you should be doing.

-Hi Kit -

I just discovered that I typed in 18 grams of carbs when I should

have typed 28 -

FYI - 1 cup strawberries 2T old fashion oats, 4 oz lite tofu, i cup

skim milk, and a little Splenda. Still needs more protein, but it is

very tasty, low in fat, and filling (to me). I'll just have to find

a way to add more protein.

Thanks Marsha!

I figured out where the files link is (on the left side of the screen where it

says " Files " ), but I am having trouble searching around on this site in general

(my first group membership). Is there another section where other recipes

can be found too? I'm especially looking for a tomato sauce recipe that I

believe you referenced on your site and mentioned you got it here? Could you

point me to that one? Thanks!!!

Gosh, Jen, I sure don’t

remember making a comment about tomato sauce.

Back to the smoothies,

you found the FILE on the left side….Double click that and then you’ll

see a listing of the various smoothie recipes.

Maybe someone else can

direct you to the tomato sauce.

One way of searching

is from the group home page, there is a search box above messages. You

can type in tomato sauce there and see if the search box brings up tomato sauce

for you.

Let us know if you need

more help! Happy 4th! Marsha

Woops, sorry, I realize now that was Lea Ann. She mentioned some type of

specific recipe in reference to this group, and how delicious it was. I've yet

to find it. I'm sure once I learn how to search better, I will. Sorry to take

this thread off topic.

Thanks again for this great, easy to find smoothie reference. I'm learning so

much from this group!

I know it has been discussed recently that it is not a good idea to blend your

kefir in your smoothies. I always blend my fruit, juice, and greens together

with ice and then mix it in with my kefir in the glass. Is it ok to mix your

kefir in with a icy mixture before you drink it or does it effect the benefits

of the kefir. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am just learning.

Thankyou all

Hi, I believe that my post re. not blending kefir*grains* was to the

point that IF you wanted to then make more kefir milk with them .. that

the breakup MIGHT cause them to not be able to reproduce functionally

equivalent to a " whole " colony. That was what I meant in whichever post

it was on the breakup/blending process. I did NOT mean that one should

not blend the grains in with a smoothy if the point is to consume the

smoothy and not try to redeem the grains for further cultures. I do

sometimes use my extra grains in that manner which I believe adds even

more " nutrient density and variety " to the smoothy. I do not believe

that mixing kefir with ice in the blender would affect its functioning

as a raw whole food. It definitely can still function for predigesting

whatever one puts in the smoothy if one lets it set another 24 hours or

so after blending. We've been consuming such " variety " of predigested

smoothies this way, that I am going to include in my book on the Wild

Wonderful World of Kefir .. starts of which are on my website at

http://recipesandremedials.wikidot.com although I do not remember right

offhand if I put them as a blog or an article. But the gist of any of

our experiments is to use the 2nd kefir ferment to help " predigest "

otherwise undigestible foods or forms of foods for my husband & I who

both require at least a semi-soft diet and I choose to make it as " raw "

as possible. For instance .. this morning we had a fermented ground-up

trail-mix in kefir which had fermented as the 2nd ferment. All the

nuts, etc. had softened considerably and thus are more " bio-available " .

In addition, we have learned that it is during the 2nd ferment that

additional vitamins and microflora are " developed " thus it is even

better ... replacing need for several otherwise expensive vitamin

supplements.

Enjoy! Joyce M. Simmerman

I think that we decided that it was OK to blend the smoothies as long as the

speeds is slow, i.e. a low setting.

As to whether cold or ice will hurt/diminish the benefits of the kefir, I sure

hope not. I doubt it. But we know that putting your " grains " in the

refrigerator will slow them down a little after they are returned to room

temperature.

I await other people's opinions and ideas.

yes, that is what my concern was, the cold effecting them. I put half my grains

in the refrigerator before I left and traveled with the other half. The

refrigerated ones have taken two milk changes to start coming back. They were

clearly not happy.

Lee Anne,

That is really good news. Also, your plan strikes me as a very good idea, sort

of a backup plan. I will do that. Then I will always have a viable stock of

kefir grains.

Tell me the details, please. Do you keep the one in the refrigerator

hermetically sealed? Stuff like that.

My neighbor from whom I got my first grains always keeps her Kefir in the

do it at different rates (frig one takes a few days). Both taste and act the

same.

I use quart Mason Jars and I leave the lids loose, I tighten them each day and

shake them a bit then re-loosen the lids. Other than that I just leave them be

and strain them when they look done (separation and lumps). They taste and act

just the same as those on the counter just in slow motion.

How does one obtain just 2 or 3 Mason Jars? I don't want to buy 16 at a time,

and that is all that I see.
