Straining kefir question...

Somewhere along the line, I came to be under the impression that the proper

strainer to be used for straining the kefir is plastic. Is this true? Is there

a reason metal cannot be used? I currently use a plastic colander but it seems I

loose so many of the developing smaller grains thru the larger holes so wondered

if I could use my metal sieve-like strainer instead.
